Acaricidal Biominerals and Mode-of-Action Studies against Adult Blacklegged Ticks, Ixodes scapularis.

Ticks in the USA are the most important arthropod vector of microbes that cause human and animal disease. The blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, the focus of this study, is able to transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme disease in humans in the USA. The main approach to tick control is the use of chemical acaricides and repellents, but known and potential tick resistance to these chemicals requires the discovery of new methods of control. Volcanic glass, Imergard, was recently developed to mimic the insecticide mode of action of the minerals from diatoms (diatomaceous earth, DE) for the cont

Assessing the effectiveness of intervention to prevent plague through community and animal-based survey.

Bubonic plague, transmitted by infected flea bites, is the most common form of plague and, left untreated, can progress to the pneumonic form, which is highly contagious. Surveillance focusing on reservoir and vector is considered to be the main approach to prevent plague. Common rodent control methods include the use of rodenticide and snap traps but, in a plague context, the dispersal of fleas from killed animals may pose a serious health threat. Therefore, there is a need for strategies which address reservoir and vector control. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of combinatio

Evaluation of an ivermectin-based attractive targeted sugar bait (ATSB) against Aedes aegypti in Tanzania.

Background The control of vector borne arboviral diseases such as Dengue is mainly achieved by reducing human-vector contact and controlling the vectors through source reduction and environmental management. These measures are constrained by labour intensity, insecticide resistance and pro-active community participation. The current study intended to develop and test an ivermectin-based attractive-targeted sugar bait (ATSB) against Aedes aegypti. Methods The 48hour lethal concentration (LC90) of ivermectin against Ae. aegypti was determined through serial dilution experiment where five 30cm x …

High efficacy of microbial larvicides for malaria vectors control in the city of Yaounde Cameroon following a cluster randomized trial.

The rapid expansion of insecticide resistance and outdoor malaria transmission are affecting the efficacy of current malaria control measures. In urban settings, where malaria transmission is focal and breeding habitats are few, fixed and findable, the addition of anti-larval control measures could be efficient for malaria vector control. But field evidences for this approach remains scarce. Here we provide findings of a randomized-control larviciding trial conducted in the city of Yaoundé that support the efficacy of this approach. A two arms random control trial design including 26 clusters …

Assessment of Trinidad community stakeholder perspectives on the use of yeast interfering RNA-baited ovitraps for biorational control of Aedes mosquitoes.

Dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever viruses continue to be a major public health burden. Aedes mosquitoes, the primary vectors responsible for transmitting these viral pathogens, continue to flourish due to local challenges in vector control management. Yeast interfering RNA-baited larval lethal ovitraps are being developed as a novel biorational control tool for Aedes mosquitoes. This intervention circumvents increasing issues with insecticide resistance and poses no known threat to non-target organisms. In an effort to create public awareness of this alternative vector control strateg…

Copper-induced H2O2 accumulation confers larval tolerance to xanthotoxin by modulating CYP6B50 expression in Spodoptera litura.

In the plant-insect arms race, plants synthesize toxic compounds to defend against herbivorous insects, whereas insects employ cytochrome P4 … toxin. As defense against oxidative stress following metal exposure has been demonstrated to affect insecticide resistance, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and antioxidant enzyme activities were assessed. Cu exposure caused the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) in larval m …

Sudden infant death syndrome: neonatal hypodynamia (reduced exercise level).

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) has been described as a silent unexpected death during sleep. Infants with near-miss SIDS have shown a higher heart rate and diminished heart rate variability during sleep. Non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep rate variability was related to respiration. A decreased heart rate variability was also observed in infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) or prenatal hypoxia. It was hypothesized that decreased heart rate variability and decreased body measurement during sleep were related to a decreased arousal response. Cardiac output is greater in the sup

Epidemic of malaria in Barmer district (Thar desert) of Rajasthan during 1990.

Barmer district of Rajasthan in Thar desert and hitherto a hypoendemic area for malaria came in the grip of a severe malaria epidemic during 1990. The epidemic occurred as an aftermath of floods, preceded by normal rains during 1988 and 1989 after a prolonged drought phase. The epidemic was spread over the whole district including Barmer town. Annual Parasite Incidence (API) and Annual falciparum Incidence (AFI) for the district touched record figures of 17.20 and 5.83 respectively while for the Barmer town they were 36.5 and 14.0 respectively. Out of the eight PHCs, Baitu PHC was the worst af

Efficacy of a combination of fipronil and permethrin in reducing the risk of Dirofilaria immitis transmission to dogs in field conditions.

BACKGROUND: Dirofilaria immitis is a life-threatening mosquito-borne parasite affecting dogs. Prevention mainly relies on macrocyclic lactones (MLs), but D. immitis resistance to MLs and lack of compliance may occur. Multimodal strategies combining chemoprophylaxis and vector control with insecticide and repellent products are often recommended. This study evaluated the efficacy of Frontline Tri-Act® (IVP), a topical combination of fipronil and permethrin, in preventing the transmission of D. immitis by repelling mosquitoes in naturally exposed dogs. METHODS: This study was conducted in north

Thermal history influences the recovery of phototrophic biofilms exposed to agricultural run-off in intermittent rivers.

The response of microbial communities to disturbances may be controlled by the past environmental conditions, through their legacy effect. In intermittent rivers, the fixed microorganisms, such as phototrophic biofilms, are exposed to variable environmental conditions, including changes in water chemistry, hydrodynamics and, in some cases water temperature. The latter may be particularly affected by the increasing frequency of summer heat waves. Our objective was therefore to assess the legacy effect of warming on phototrophic biofilms during a flow intermittency sequence. Our main hypotheses
