Activism and radicalism modulate sex differences in interpersonal risks: a dual moderation analysis.

While engagement in risk-taking is highly prevalent during youth, there are individual differences in its expression. Generally, male youth tend to engage in risk-taking more than female youth. However, sex differences in risk-taking behaviors may be modulated by political mobilization processes. The present study analyzed how intentions toward activism and radicalism moderate the relationship between sex and various risk-taking behaviors, including health risks, interpersonal risks, and deviant non-violent behaviors. A total of 496 individuals participated in the study, of which 222 were fema

How Children Stop Adult Perpetrators From Unwanted Touching Within an Institutional Setting: Termination Patterns During Sexual Contact Stage.

This qualitative study analyzes victims' narratives of male-on-male child molestation within the Boy Scouts of America. The focus of previous literature on sex crime victims mostly centered on how to avoid sex offenders based on the offenders' behaviors and effective victims' treatment plans to alleviate their posttrauma as a result of sexual abuse. Yet studies have not provided detailed descriptions of when and how to resist sexual advances to children when such incidents are in progress within youth-oriented institutions. Few have examined victim narratives to discover the dynamics of child

Situational Facilitators and Barriers of Bystander Intervention Intent in Image-Based Sexual Abuse Contexts.

Image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) encompasses the taking, sharing, and/or making threats to share nude or sexual images of others without consent. Research shows that a large percentage of individuals have been a bystander to IBSA, but most do not intervene. Currently, there is little understanding of why this is the case. The research presented in this article begins to address this gap in the literature by identifying situational factors that facilitate or inhibit behavioral intentions to intervene through three experimental studies. In each study, situational factors were manipulated using vi

Assessing youth's internal and external attributions to negative peer interactions and victimization-development of the Causal Attributions for Peer Experiences (CAPE) scale.

Many youth experience negative behavior from their peers, which can have lasting consequences for their social functioning and well-being. One mechanism through which negative interactions affect youth is causal attributions, that is, the interpretations that they make for why a negative interaction occurred. We present the newly developed CAPE (Causal Attributions for Peer Experiences) scale, which assesses youth's stable internal, unstable internal, stable external, and unstable external attributions for peers' mean behavior. Self-blame (characterological and behavioral) and hostile intent a

Neural systems for processing social relationship information along two principal dimensions.

Comprehending the social relationships of others is essential for daily social interactions. Previous research has revealed the neural substrates involved in inferring others' mental states and detecting social features. However, the neural bases underlying the processing of complex information about diverse human social relationships remain poorly understood. Here, using empirical data collected while participants viewed naturalistic movie clips and evaluated social relationships inside an fMRI scanner, we identify two primary dimensions underlying social relationship recognition. The first d

Heterogeneity in interpersonal and intrapersonal emotion regulation among adolescents with histories of child physical abuse and emotional abuse: a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation significantly influences the psychological health of adolescents. However, there appears to be a lack of research examining the various forms of both different types of interpersonal and intrapersonal emotion regulation (inter-ER and intra-ER) in Chinese adolescents. This study aimed to identify distinct patterns of emotion regulation profiles among abused adolescents in inter-ER and intra-ER, the psychological health differences in different emotion regulation profiles, and the demographic variables affecting profile membership. METHODS: To assess the experience

Social Relationships and Tooth Loss in Adults Aged 60 Years and Older: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically assess current evidence on the extent to which social relationships are associated with tooth loss in adults aged 60 years and older. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL and The Cochrane Library databases to identify relevant studies published from 1966 up to March 2024. Cross-sectional or cohort studies investigating the association between structural, functional and/or combined (structural and functional) components of social relationships and the number of remaining teeth or edentulism among community-

Strengths, Struggles, and Strategies: How Adults with Serious Mental Illness Navigate Long-Term Romantic Relationships.

Married individuals and those in committed romantic relationships generally report having better mental health outcomes than their single or divorced counterparts. However, studies of romantic relationships for adults with mental illness have often ignored rewarding aspects of romantic relationships and have focused primarily on relationship difficulties. In this study, 23 adults with serious mental illness in long-term romantic relationships described their relationship strengths and struggles in small focus group discussions. Content analysis was used to characterize themes from participant

I think you might like me: Emergence and change of meta-liking in initial social interactions.

Feeling accepted by others is a fundamental human motive and an important marker of successful social interactions. This interpersonal perception, known as meta-liking, is especially relevant during adolescence, when peer relationships deepen and expand. However, knowledge is limited regarding meta-liking formation in initial social interactions. This study investigated whether adolescents (N = 293, Mage = 15.48, 61.10% female) have default expectations for meta-liking at zero acquaintance and how these judgments are updated during initial group interactions. Specifically, we used latent chang

Targeting Peer Contagion Dynamics in Children with ADHD: Effects from a Two-Site Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Parental Friendship Coaching (PFC) teaches parents to coach their children in friendship skills. This paper examines whether PFC fosters positive peer contagion processes (i.e. dyadic mutuality) and reduces negative peer contagion processes (i.e. coercive joining) within the friendships of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHOD: Participants were 134 families of children with ADHD and peer problems (age 6-11 years; 69% male; 72% white) at two Canadian sites, randomized to PFC or CARE (an active comparison intervention). Children were observed in the l

Understanding how volunteer companionship impacts those during the end of life: A realist evaluation.

Volunteers are a popular unpaid support role in end of life care yet how accompaniment influences the dying is underdeveloped. This study examined how companionship works, for whom, in what circumstances and why. Initial realist ideas were developed through participant observation (14 months), document analysis, and realist interviews with companionship trainers (n = 6). Theory testing involved volunteer interviews (n = 7), accounts from the dying, proxy accounts for the dying, and written reflections from companionship training. Companionship helps people live well until they die, prepare for

The double-edged sword of workplace friendship: exploring when and how workplace friendship promotes versus inhibits voice behavior.

Extant research has demonstrated the positive roles of workplace friendships and has recently found the negative effect or the double-edged effect on employees and organizations. Unfortunately, little is known about the boundary condition of the double-edged effects of workplace friendships and the elaborated understanding of the mechanism of positive and negative effects of workplace friendship simultaneously. Our purpose is to reveal that workplace friendship is a mixed blessing by investigating when and how workplace friendships are likely to promote versus inhibit voice behavior. We propos

Quantifying Toxic Friendship: A Preliminary Investigation of a Measure of Victimization in the Friendships of Adolescents.

Although friendship is a key source of support and intimacy for adolescents, adolescent friendships can also involve victimization, which can be harmful to youth well-being. To date, our understanding of victimization in friendship has been limited by a lack of measures that comprehensively capture the variety of negative behaviors occurring in this relationship. This study outlines the development and preliminary validation of the Friendship Victimization Scale for Adolescents (FVS-A), which assesses victimization and controlling behaviors in adolescent friendships. Adolescents (N = 706, Mage

Proximity within adolescent peer networks predicts neural similarity during affective experience.

Individuals befriend others who are similar to them. One important source of similarity in relationships is similarity in felt emotion. In the present study, we used novel methods to assess whether greater similarity in the multivoxel brain representation of affective stimuli was associated with adolescents' proximity within real-world school-based social networks. We examined dyad-level neural similarity within a set of brain regions associated with the representation of affect including the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), amygdala, insula, and temporal pole. Greater proximity was ass

People in relationally mobile cultures report higher well-being.

In cultures with high relational mobility, relationships are free and flexible. People can make new friends easily, and they have the freedom to leave unsatisfying relationships. In cultures with low relational mobility, relationships are more fixed, and people have less freedom to leave relationships. We argue that people experience higher well-being if they have the freedom to exit toxic relationships and find new partners easily. In Study 1, we ran a controlled comparison by testing people all within the same nation. We measured well-being and relational mobility in a representative sample

A Dyadic Study of Attachment, Coping, and Quality of Life in Couples Seeking Fertility Treatment.

This study examined attachment insecurities, infertility-specific coping strategies, and quality of life (QoL) in 87 couples seeking fertility treatment. Partners completed self-report measures. Path analyses showed that women's and men's attachment anxiety were associated with their own lower QoL, whereas attachment avoidance was associated with their own and their partner's lower QoL. Adaptive coping in men and women were associated with women's higher QoL. Non-adaptive coping was associated with men and women's lower QoL. Coping strategies explained the associations between attachment and Q

Emotion Regulation Difficulties and Relationship Satisfaction in Adolescent Couples: The Role of Conflict Resolution Strategies.

Emotion regulation difficulties have been found to predict relationship satisfaction in adult samples, yet little is known with regards to the processes explaining these associations in adolescent dating relationships. Furthermore, among the available literature, most studies only consider one romantic partner. To address this gap, this study used a dyadic approach and considered the role of conflict resolution strategies (i.e., positive problem-solving, withdrawal, and conflict engagement) in the association between adolescents' emotion regulation and romantic relationship satisfaction. A sam

Sexual Health in Adolescents and Young Adults With Cancer.

Sexual health (SH), an integral aspect of overall health and quality of life, can be negatively affected by cancer and cancer treatment. SH is influenced by biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors, and, for adolescents and young adults (AYAs), developmental factors. The AYA population (age 15-39 years) is diverse in terms of psychosexual development, interpersonal relationships, and varying levels of independence, resulting in unique SH needs for this population. AYAs with cancer are particularly vulnerable to unmet SH needs related to contraception and infection prevention, se…
