An evaluation of root resorption after orthodontic treatment.

Root resorption is commonly seen, albeit in varying degrees, in cases that have been treated orthodontically. In this retrospective study the objective was to compare the amount of root resorption observed after active orthodontic treatment had been completed with one of three different appliance systems, namely, Tip Edge, Modified Edgewise and Damon. The sample consisted of pre and post-treatment cephalograms of sixty eight orthodontic cases. Root resorption of the maxillary central incisor was assessed from pre- and post- treatment lateral ce phalograms using two methods. In the first, overa

Multiple endocrine neoplasia in an orthodontic patient: Interprofessional diagnostic and treatment implications.

BACKGROUND: Multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 2B (MEN 2B), is an autosomal-dominant condition characterized by the development of multiple endocrine tumors. All affected people develop an aggressive form of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). Without early prophylactic thyroidectomy, the prognosis for patients with MEN 2B is poor; the average age at death is 21 years. CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors present a case of a 16-year-old girl who had a diagnosis of MEN 2B and was treated successfully for metastatic MTC. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Given the striking orofacial manifestations of MEN 2B (marfan

Moving an incisor across the midline: a treatment alternative in an adolescent patient.

A 13-year-old sought treatment for a severely compromised maxillary left central incisor and an impacted fully developed left canine. Extraction of both teeth became necessary. As the key component of the revised comprehensive treatment plan, the right maxillary central incisor was moved into the position of the left central incisor. All other maxillary teeth were moved mesially to close any gaps. Active orthodontic treatment was completed after 34 months. Frenectomy, minor periodontal surgeries, and bonded lingual retainers were used to improve aesthetics and stabilize the tooth positions. Th

Relationship of body mass index to stability of mandibular advancement surgery with rigid fixation.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a growing problem in the United States. We examined patients undergoing orthognathic surgical correction for Class II skeletal malocclusions and assessed outcomes in relation to body mass index. METHODS: The patients (n = 78) were divided into 3 groups (obese, overweight, and normal or thin) based on body mass index score. They were treated with mandibular advancement (mean, 4.9 mm) with rigid fixation and evaluated cephalometrically for postsurgical changes over a 2-year period; a subset of 54 patients was followed for 5 years. RESULTS: Obese and overweight patients

Facial dimensions, bite force and masticatory muscle thickness in preschool children with functional posterior crossbite.

Posterior crossbite may affect craniofacial growth and development. Thus, this study aimed to associate facial dimensions (by standardized frontal photographs) to masseter and anterior portion of the temporal muscle thickness (by ultrasonography) and maximal bilateral bite force in 49 children with deciduous and early mixed dentitions. They were distributed in four groups: deciduous-normal occlusion (DNO, n = 15), deciduous-crossbite (DCB, n = 10), mixed-normal occlusion (MNO, n = 13) and mixed-crossbite (MCB, n = 11). Anterior facial height (AFH), bizygomatic width (FWB), and intergonial widt

Periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics combined with autogenous bone grafting.

This case report documents the first use of particulate autogenous bone graft with the corticotomy-assisted rapid orthodontic procedure known as periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO). A 41-year-old man, with class II, division 2 crowded occlusion, was treated with the PAOO procedure. Buccal mucoperiosteal flaps were reflected, and selected vertical and horizontal corticotomy was performed around the roots in both the maxillary and mandibular arches. Particulate bone graft was harvested from the rami and exostosis for alveolar ridge augmentation. Orthodontic movement was init

Treatment of condylar hypoplasia with distraction osteogenesis: a case report.

This report describes the surgical-orthodontic treatment procedures of a patient with condylar hypoplasia. Condylar hypoplasia is a major factor in any facial abnormality in a growing child. This case report describes a patient with a facial anomaly with an acquired unilateral condylar hypoplasia. His asymmetry was corrected by using functional therapy for the correction of muscle tonus and distraction osteogenesis for lengthening the mandibular ramal height. Fixed orthodontic appliances were used for conventional orthodontic therapy and final occlusal adjustment.

Effects of thalassaemia major on components of the craniofacial complex.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the craniofacial effects of thalassaemia major and involved a cephalometric analysis of two samples, consisting of 30 thalassaemic patients and 30 control cases. Differences between the groups were tested by Variance analysis (two factors completely randomized design). It was found that thalassaemia major had significant effects on components of the craniofacial complex: The typical thalassaemic patient had a moderate Class 2 skeletal discrepancy with pronounced vertical mandibular growth direction, prominent mandibular incisors, everted lips, and a na

Age effects on orthodontic treatment: adolescents contrasted with adults.

Skeletodental treatment changes in 30 adolescent girls and 26 women who had Class II, Division 1 malocclusions were contrasted cephalometrically, primarily with the McNamara analysis. The data show that adult treatment does not obligate the practitioner to longer treatment. In this study, both age groups were treated in 2.5 years on the average. Apical base corrections were achieved with equal facility in both groups by the posterior remodeling of point A, and this (in conjunction with unrestrained mandibular growth) is the major source of correction in the adolescents. In adults, in whom grow
