Leadership in literature.

Business students nowadays are not, for the most part, poets. A growing proportion come to business school with a background in investment banking or management consulting and an undergraduate business major, rather than a degree in the arts and sciences. MBA students are already very familiar with business. A number of scholars and businesspeople have begun to question the scientific model that dominates business research and teaching. Formalized management tools work well enough if you're studying techniques for financial valuation, but less so when you're studying leadership and organizatio

Prioritizing IVF treatment in the post-COVID 19 era: a predictive modelling study based on UK national data.

STUDY QUESTION: Can we use prediction modelling to estimate the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID 19) related delay in starting IVF or ICSI in different groups of women? SUMMARY ANSWER: Yes, using a combination of three different models we can predict the impact of delaying access to treatment by 6 and 12 months on the probability of conception leading to live birth in women of different age groups with different categories of infertility. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Increased age and duration of infertility can prejudice the chances of success following IVF, but couples with unexplained

A dynamic approach for outpatient scheduling.

AIMS: Patient no-show is a recurrent problem in medical centers and, in conjunction with cancellation of appointments, often results in loss of productivity and excessive patient time to appointment. The purpose of this study was to develop a dynamic procedure for scheduling patients within an outpatient clinic where patients are expected to have multiple appointments, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, primary care, and dentistry. METHODS: This retrospective study involved the year 2014 de-identified patient records from an outpatient clinic affiliated with a large university ho

Dose fractionated gamma knife radiosurgery for large arteriovenous malformations on daily or alternate day schedule outside the linear quadratic model: Proof of concept and early results. A substitute to volume fractionation.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the feasibility, safety and efficacy of dose fractionated gamma knife radiosurgery (DFGKRS) on a daily schedule beyond the linear quadratic (LQ) model, for large volume arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 2012-16, 14 patients of large AVMs (median volume 26.5 cc) unsuitable for surgery or embolization were treated in 2-3 of DFGKRS sessions. The Leksell G frame was kept in situ during the whole procedure. 86% (n = 12) patients had radiologic evidence of bleed, and 43% (n = 6) had presented with a history of seizures. 57% (n = 8) patients re

Improving the appropriateness of prescribing in older patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis of pharmacists' interventions in secondary care.

INTRODUCTION: potentially inappropriate prescribing (PIP) in older hospitalised patients, and in particular those with dementia, is associated with poorer health outcomes. PIP reduction is therefore essential in this population. METHODS: a comprehensive electronic literature search was conducted using 12 databases from inception up to and including September 2014. Inclusion criteria were controlled trials (randomised or non-randomised) of interventions involving pharmacists conducted in hospitals, with an objective of the study being PIP reduction in patients 65 years or older or patients wit

Adapting the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model of police-mental health collaboration in a low-income, post-conflict country: curriculum development in Liberia, West Africa.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to develop a curriculum and collaboration model for law enforcement and mental health services in Liberia, West Africa. METHODS: In 2013 we conducted key informant interviews with law enforcement officers, mental health clinicians, and mental health service users in Liberia, and facilitated a 3-day curriculum workshop. RESULTS: Mental health service users reported prior violent interactions with officers. Officers and clinicians identified incarceration and lack of treatment of mental health service users as key problems, and they jointly drafted a curriculum based upon

Applying a performance monitoring framework to increase reach and adoption of children's healthy eating and physical activity programs.

The allocation of a significant amount of new funding for health promotion in Australia through the National Partnership Agreement on Preventive Health (2009-14) created a unique opportunity to implement a comprehensive approach to the prevention of chronic diseases and demonstrate significant health improvements. Building on existing health promotion infrastructure in Local Health Districts, the NSW Ministry of Health adopted a scaled-up state-wide capacity-building model, designed to alter policies and practices in key children's settings to increase healthy eating and physical activity amon

Co-managed care for fragility hip fractures (Rochester model).

Hip fractures in older adults are a common event with a high risk of morbidity and mortality. Patients who sustain a hip fracture often present with multiple co-morbid conditions that can benefit from co-management by orthopedic surgeons and geriatricians. This manuscript describes a co-managed model of care for patients with hip fractures. This model of care will be explained, and the benefits and results will be described. Retrospective review of the care of all native non-pathological hip fracture patients aged 60 years and older admitted between April 2005 and March 2009 to a 261-bed commu

Optimal investment in a portfolio of HIV prevention programs.

OBJECTIVES: In this article, the authors determine the optimal allocation of HIV prevention funds and investigate the impact of different allocation methods on health outcomes. METHODS: The authors present a resource allocation model that can be used to determine the allocation of HIV prevention funds that maximizes quality-adjusted life years (or life years) gained or HIV infections averted in a population over a specified time horizon. They apply the model to determine the allocation of a limited budget among 3 types of HIV prevention programs in a population of injection drug users and non

Evaluation of Ambient Voice Technology in the National Health Service in England: Protocol for a Phase 2 Study.

BACKGROUND: Ambient voice technology (AVT) uses conversational AI to record and organize clinical consultations in real time. It is being adopted quickly across the National Health Service (NHS). However, evidence about its effects on productivity, costs, or staff experience across different health care settings is limited. Phase 1 of this research program developed a taxonomy, logic model, and outcome framework for evaluating AVT. Phase 2 will carry out a multisite, mixed methods evaluation of AVT in 4 NHS trusts. These include mental health outpatient services, acute hospital outpatient clin

A socio-ecological approach to the determinants of animal health management: A scoping review.

With approximately 60% of human infectious diseases originating from zoonotic sources, an integrated approach to animal health management is critical. Significant barriers persist in optimizing disease control strategies, particularly regarding diagnostics, surveillance, biosecurity, and vaccination systems. Beyond technical and health-related aspects, socio-economic factors substantially influence both adoption and efficacy of intervention measures. While these determinants have been increasingly explored through integration of social sciences, such as economics, sociology, political science,

The Impact of Shared Governance: Implementing Preoperative Warming to Improve Postanesthesia Outcomes Among Gynecological Patients.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional perioperative hypothermia (PH), a core body temperature below 36°C, is a common and preventable complication leading to adverse outcomes. While Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols and professional guidelines recommend preoperative warming measures, particularly forced-air warming (FAW), implementation remains inconsistent. In response to observations of inconsistent preoperative normothermia interventions, a multidisciplinary team utilized a shared governance (SG) model to drive an evidence-based practice (EBP) change. PURPOSE: The aim of this EBP projec

Early budget impact analysis of magnetic balloon technology for facilitating the completion of difficult colonoscopies.

BACKGROUND: Colonoscopy is one of the most frequently performed medical procedures worldwide, yet incomplete examinations remain common, leading to higher costs and delay in diagnosis and therapy. When a colonoscopy is not finished, a second procedure is recommended to complete the exploration of the large bowel such as another optical colonoscopy or virtual colonoscopy. Endorail® is a medical device accessory for colonoscopes, based on magnetic balloon technology, developed to facilitate colonoscopy completion. This study reports an early budget impact analysis to quantify the short-term fina

Extremely unbalanced: interest divergence and power disparities between clients and psychiatry.

We have tried to show, first, that there exists a wide divergence between the interests of psychiatry and clients: none of the three major models underpinning society's trust in psychiatrists justify confidence that the interests of psychiatry and its clients converge enough to warrant psychiatrists' speaking and acting for clients in the development of the mental health system and its policies. Second, the distribution of power between psychiatrists and clients is highly unequal: the voices of clients have been co-opted or submerged by those of other groups, particularly organized psychiatry

Aberrant cortical-subcortical-cerebellar connectivity in resting-state fMRI as an imaging marker of schizophrenia and psychosis: a systematic review of data-driven whole-brain functional connectivity analyses.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia is extremely heterogenous, and the underlying brain mechanisms are not fully understood. Many attempts have been made to substantiate and delineate the relationship between schizophrenia and the brain through unbiased exploratory investigations of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). The results of numerous data-driven rs-fMRI studies have converged in support of the disconnection hypothesis framework, reporting aberrant connectivity in cortical-subcortical-cerebellar circuitry. However, this model is vague and underspecified, encompassing
