Autogenous rib graft for reconstruction of alveolar bone defects in cleft patients. Long-term follow-up results.

In a retrospective study (mean follow-up 76 months), the use of a free autogenous rib graft for reconstruction of anterior residual bone defects in seventeen cleft patients is evaluated on a long term basis. The results show recurrence of a palatal oronasal fistula in 2 out of 17 patients. 6 patients had acceptable results, while 9 had good to excellent scores at all sites. The costal graft material does not prevent permanent upper cuspids from erupting into this bone, after its incorporation. It is concluded that autogenous rib bone is a good material for secondary bone grafting of the residu

Alkaline phosphatase activity in gingival crevicular fluid during human orthodontic tooth movement.

Bone remodeling that occurs during orthodontic tooth movement is a biologic process involving an acute inflammatory response in periodontal … ression sites. These results suggest that ALP activity in GCF reflects the biologic activity in the periodontium during orthodontic movement and therefore should be further investigated as a diagnostic tool for monitoring orthodontic tooth movement in clinical practice.

The relationship between periodontal diseases and diabetes: an overview.

Diabetes mellitus, caused by the malfunction of insulin-dependent glucose and lipid metabolism, presents with the classical triad of symptoms: polydypsia, polyuria, and polyphagia which are often accompanied by chronic fatigue and loss of weight. Complications of diabetes mellitus include retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, and cardiovascular disease. Periodontal diseases are infections affecting the periodontium and resulting in the loss of tooth support. The association between diabetes mellitus and periodontitis has long been discussed with conflicting conclusions. Both of these diseases …

Regulation of gingival fibroblast interleukin-6 secretion by cyclosporine A.

BACKGROUND: Cyclosporine A (CsA) is a widely used immunosuppressant, with clinical applications ranging from organ transplants to chronic inflammatory diseases. One of the side effects associated with CsA treatment is the development of gingival overgrowth. Exuberant growth of connective tissue within the periodontium can result from hyperactivity of resident fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are capable of secreting interleukin-6 (IL-6), which has been shown to enhance proliferation as well as collagen and glycosaminoglycan synthesis by these cells. We tested the hypothesis that one of the pathogeneti…

Periodontal regeneration using an injectable bone cement combined with BMP-2 or FGF-2.

Periodontitis is a frequently diagnosed oral disease characterized by bone resorption and soft tissue loss around teeth. Unfortunately, currently available therapies only slow or arrest progress of the disease. Ideally, treatment of periodontal defects should be focused on complete regeneration of the lost tissues [(bone and periodontal ligament (PDL)]. As a result, this study used intrabony defects to evaluate the regenerative potential of an injectable macroporous calcium phosphate cement (CaP) in combination with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) or fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2). Histological analysis of the Ankylos peri-implant soft tissues in a dog model.

PURPOSE: The importance of the soft tissue-implant interface is enhanced by the presence of a microgap between the implant and the abutment, which represents a contamination site for bacteria. The aim of this study was to investigate the interface between the Ankylos gap-free implant system and the surrounding soft tissues in a dog model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six Labrador dogs were included in the study and two Ankylos implants were inserted per dog. The dogs were killed 6 months after abutment placement without functional loading and without plaque control. The implants were analysed histo

Ankylosis of the mouse molar after systemic administration of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-bisphosphonate (HEBP).

The proposed homeostasis between fibroblasts in the periodontal ligament and bone cells lining the inner aspect of the alveolar wall is thought to be responsible for maintaining the width of the periodontal ligament space. In the present study, we attempted to interfere with this cellular balance by systemic administration of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-bisphosphonate (HEBP). The maxillary left molars of mice were extracted. They then received a daily subcutaneous injection of HEBP (10 mg P/kg b.w.) for periods of 10, 30 or 50 days. A 2nd group of animals received HEBP without molar extraction. Co

The influence of anatomical, pathophysiological and other factors on periodontal healing after impacted lower third molar surgery. A multiple regression analysis.

A multifactorial approach has been used to identify some predictors of postoperative intrabony defects (IBD) on the distal surface of the adjacent second molar (M2) after impacted lower third molar (M3) surgery. The material consisted of 215 lower third molar removals, performed on 144 persons (age range 16-53 years; mean 27.2 years). The postoperative examination took place 2 years after impaction surgery and included both clinical and radiographic variables. Statistically significant (5% significance level) predictors of IBD found in stepwise multiple regression analyses were: (1) preoperati

CD300lf Regulates Neutrophil Aging and Periodontal Immune Homeostasis.

Immune alterations, such as neutrophil dysfunction, significantly affect the progression and outcome of periodontitis, a prevalent inflammatory disease. Despite this, the molecular mechanisms driving neutrophil dysregulation in periodontitis remain poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrate that CD300lf, a critical immune regulator, is markedly downregulated in neutrophils from a periodontitis mouse model and human patients. The loss of CD300lf accelerates neutrophil aging, as evidenced by increased reactive oxygen species production, the senescence-associated secretory phenotype with el

Soluble epoxide hydrolase inhibition impairs triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 in periodontal tissue.

AIMS: Periodontitis is a prevalent inflammatory disorder affecting the oral cavity, driven by dysbiotic oral biofilm and host immune response interactions. While the major clinical focus of periodontitis treatment is currently controlling oral biofilm, understanding the immune response is crucial to prevent disease progression. Soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) inhibition has shown promise in preventing alveolar bone resorption. Triggering receptors expressed on myeloid cells (TREMs) play pivotal roles in regulating inflammation and bone homeostasis, and dysregulation of TREM signaling is implic

Epigenetic modifier trichostatin A enhanced osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells by inhibiting NF-κB (p65) DNA binding and promoted periodontal repair in rats.

We wished to evaluate whether epigenetic modifiers have a beneficial effect on treating experimental periodontitis and mechanisms for regulating the cell fate of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in inflammatory microenvironments. We isolated MSCs from healthy and inflamed gingival tissues to investigate whether trichostatin A (TSA) could improve osteogenic differentiation and resolve inflammation in vitro. The tissue regenerative potentials were evaluated when treated with a temperature-dependent, chitosan-scaffold-encapsulated TSA, in a rat model of periodontitis. After induction with the condit

Prospective Analysis of the Relationship Between the State of Periodontal Tissues and Changes in Selected Cardiovascular Parameters in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is considered a risk factor in many systemic diseases, including cardiovascular pathologies and diabetes. Diabetes can also exacerbate early vascular changes, mainly due to the synthesis of advanced glycosylation end-products and oxidative stress. It has not yet been fully explained whether the additional presence of periodontal disease can affect the course of atherosclerosis and left ventricle hypertrophy in diabetic patients. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between periodontal and cardiovascular diseases and their progression in pat

Effects of smoking on periodontal tissues.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Most studies about the association between tobacco and periodontal disease have shown that tobacco negatively affects periodontal tissues, although some authors have failed to demonstrate such association. Very few studies have tried to find out whether the effect of tobacco on periodontal tissues was similar for women and men. The aims of this investigation were to confirm the possible relationship between tobacco consumption and periodontitis, to study the correlation between intensity of smoking and disease severity, and to investigate any differences between genders relate
