Accuracy of State-Level Surveillance during Emerging Outbreaks of Respiratory Viruses: A Model-Based Assessment.

It is long perceived that the more data collection, the more knowledge emerges about the real disease progression. During emergencies like the H1N1 and the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemics, public health surveillance requested increased testing to address the exacerbated demand. However, it is currently unknown how accurately surveillance portrays disease progression through incidence and confirmed case trends. State surveillance, unlike commercial testing, can process specimens based on the upcoming demand (e.g., with testing restrictions). Hence, proper assessment of

Acceptability of a family-centered newborn care model among providers and receivers of care in a Public Health Setting: a qualitative study from India.

BACKGROUND: Family-centered care (FCC), based on collaborative participation of the family along with a team of health care providers, is found to increase the well-being of sick infants in neonatal critical care units. Over the last 4 years, the neonatal unit of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi has innovated and developed an implementation framework for FCC. This qualitative study assessed the acceptability of family-centered care among providers and family members of neonates to identify gaps and challenges in implementation. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted among a purpos

The current situation of meningococcal disease in Latin America and updated Global Meningococcal Initiative (GMI) recommendations.

The Global Meningococcal Initiative (GMI) was established in 2009 and comprises an international team of scientists, clinicians, and public health officials with expertise in meningococcal disease (MD). Its primary goal is to promote global prevention of MD through education, research, international cooperation, and developing recommendations that include decreasing the burden of severe disease. The group held its first roundtable meeting with experts from Latin American countries in 2011, and subsequently proposed several recommendations to reduce the regional burden of MD. A second roundtabl

Estimating the non-monetary burden of neurocysticercosis in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a major public health problem in many developing countries where health education, sanitation, and meat inspection infrastructure are insufficient. The condition occurs when humans ingest eggs of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium, which then develop into larvae in the central nervous system. Although NCC is endemic in many areas of the world and is associated with considerable socio-economic losses, the burden of NCC remains largely unknown. This study provides the first estimate of disability adjusted life years (DALYs) associated with NCC in Mexico. MET

Community health worker-supported oral health promotion in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review of roles, interventions, and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases are among the most prevalent conditions worldwide and disproportionately affect populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The shortage and maldistribution of the oral health workforce have widened inequalities in prevention and treatment. Task-sharing through community health workers (CHWs) has been promoted as a cost-effective and sustainable strategy for extending services to underserved populations; however, evidence on their roles in oral health promotion in LMICs remains fragmented. This scoping review mapped evidence on CHW-supported oral health p

Mobile Intervention for Increasing COVID-19 Testing in K-12 Schools Serving Disadvantaged Communities: Randomized Controlled Trial of SCALE-UP Counts.

BACKGROUND: A key challenge for schools throughout the COVID-19 pandemic was finding ways to monitor and prevent COVID-19 cases. While diagnostic testing and connecting students and their families to appropriate resources to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 were recommended, few schools had scalable infrastructure, including information technology systems, to implement these types of measures. OBJECTIVE: This study tested a new approach to COVID-19 testing (SCALE-UP Counts) in school settings that used automated bidirectional text messages provided to the school community that alerted parents

Embedding community engagement in tuberculosis (TB) research: evidence from urban Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: According to the WHO Global Tuberculosis (TB) Report, Bangladesh recorded an estimated 379,000 new and relapse cases in 2023, with approximately 44,000 TB-related deaths. Bangladesh also ranks 22nd globally in tobacco use, which worsens TB outcomes by weakening immunity and reducing treatment effectiveness [1]. To address this TB-tobacco nexus, ARK Foundation conducted the Quit4TB Trial, funded by the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Respiratory Health (RESPIRE), to evaluate an mHealth-based smoking cessation intervention among TB patients, with embedded community engagement to

Multilevel onsite training and mentorship model to accelerate early childhood cancer diagnosis in Northwest Ethiopia: A quasi-experimental mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survival in low-income countries remains below 20%, with late recognition and delayed referral commonly reported. In Northwest Ethiopia, care providers often lack the knowledge, skills, and support systems for recognizing early warning signs of pediatric malignancies. Community caregivers often present only after symptoms become advanced. The University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital piloted a quality improvement initiative aimed at achieving earlier diagnoses. This study reports whether a multilevel onsite training and mentorship model could improve

Prevalence and multidrug resistance patterns of bacterial pathogens in wastewater and drinking water systems from hospital and non-hospital environments in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Wastewater systems worldwide can transport bacterial pathogens alongside antimicrobial resistance genes and pharmaceutical residues. The presence of these pathogens and resistance genes in wastewater systems poses significant public health risks, especially in regions like Ethiopia, where limited wastewater treatment and sanitation infrastructure exist. The spread of infectious diseases and the exacerbation of antimicrobial resistance through wastewater can contribute to the growing global health challenge, with specific implications for local healthcare systems. OBJECTIVE: This s

Return of Research Results to Participants in Longitudinal Cohort Studies in Health Research: Findings From 24 Cohorts of the Amsterdam Cohort Hub.

BACKGROUND: Returning research results to participants is increasingly recognised as part of participant-centred health research. How this is implemented in longitudinal cohort studies is not yet well characterised. This study aims to provide a descriptive overview of current result return practices across diverse cohort studies in the Netherlands. METHODS: Drawing on the Amsterdam Cohort Hub, an infrastructure of population-based and patient-based cohorts in the Netherlands, representatives of 24 affiliated cohort studies completed a structured questionnaire administered via individual inter

Quality-controlled newborn hearing screening in Ghana: Outcomes and challenges from a pilot project.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hearing impairment affects 1-2 per 1000 live births in high-income countries, making early detection and habilitation critical before 6 months of age to ensure optimal language and communication development. Ghana currently lacks national legislation supporting universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS). METHODS: This multicentre, hospital-based pilot study analysed newborn hearing screening data from four facilities between July 2023 and January 2025. Screening was conducted by trained staff using transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions and automated auditory brainstem re

Mothers' reproductive and medical history misinformation practices as strategies against healthcare providers' domination and humiliation in maternal care decision-making interactions: an ethnographic study in Southern Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women can misinform or withhold their reproductive and medical information from providers when they interact with them during care decision-making interactions, although, the information clients reveal or withhold while seeking care plays a critical role in the quality of care provided. This study explored 'how' and 'why' pregnant women in Ghana control their past obstetric and reproductive information as they interact with providers at their first antenatal visit, and how this influences providers' decision-making at the time and in subsequent care encounters. METHODS: T

Improvised care: Jewish refugee medicine and public health in wartime Shanghai, 1938-1945.

Between 1938 and 1941, nearly 20,000 Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution arrived in wartime Shanghai, a city already destabilized by the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), mass displacement, and fragmented governance. Their arrival exposed the limits of Shanghai's overstretched public health system while also generating new forms of medical organisation, refugee self-governance, and intercultural collaboration. Drawing on archival records, refugee memoirs, wartime newspapers, and medical journals, this article reconstructs the development of an improvised yet integrated refugee healthcare inf
