Primary hyperparathyroidism results from the overproduction of parathyroid hormone by 1 or more autonomously hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands and often causes hypercalcemia. Once this condition has been diagnosed, the treatment of choice is surgical removal. There have been many attempts to remove the hyperfunctioning gland with minimally invasive surgical techniques, with cure rates comparable with those of conventional techniques. On the basis of our initial surgical experiences of robotic thyroidectomy and other head and neck surgeries via a retroauricular (RA) approach, we have recently

Robotic percutaneous interventional systems represent the future of interventional cardiology. Robotic technology significantly reduces operator exposure to ionizing radiation, and improves ergonomics in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, thereby preventing orthopedic injuries. It may enable more accurate stent implantation and reduce the incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy. Robotics has the potential of converting the current 'high-risk' catheterization laboratory into a safe, physician- and patient-friendly environment.

BACKGROUND: The totally robotic procedure was traditionally described as a two-stage technique or a three-stage technique. The number of stages corresponds to the number of movements of the robotic cart. In this video article, we develop a stepwise approach video of robotic total mesorectal excision (TME) for mid rectal cancer (the surgery was performed by SHK) using a da Vinci® Si HD Surgical System (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA, USA) at Korea University Anam Hospital, Seoul.
METHODS: After the induction of general anesthesia, the patient is placed in a modified lithotomy position. Six

Objective. To examine success of robot-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy (RALM) measured by sustained symptom relief and fertility. Methods. This is a retrospective survey of 426 women who underwent RALM for fibroids, symptom relief, or infertility at three practice sites across the US. We examined rates of symptom recurrence and pregnancy and factors associated with these outcomes. Results. Overall, 70% of women reported being symptom-free, with 62.9% free of symptoms after three years. At >3 years, 66.7% of women who underwent surgery to treat infertility and 80% who were also symptom-free re

This study evaluated the technical feasibility and efficacy of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) to aid its identification and preservation during robotic thyroidectomy (RoT). IONM of the RLN was evaluated in 30 consecutive patients undergoing RoT. All patients underwent an indirect laryngoscope examination to objectively assess vocal cord function. Their Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) was measured to subjectively assess vocal cord function preoperatively and at postoperative months 1 and 3. Of the 56 RLNs at risk in 30 patients undergoing RoT, all

BACKGROUND: Transoral techniques for endoscopic thyroidectomy have recently been reported, including a robotic transoral technique to access the thyroid gland. Herein, we developed a robotic transoral periosteal thyroidectomy technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The da Vinci(®) Surgical System (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA) robot was used in two human cadavers to perform robotic transoral periosteal thyroidectomies. In the first cadaver, the anterior neck was exposed below the platysmal muscle. The anatomical spaces and surgical planes were observed with four ports by a periosteal approach.

Persons with neurologic conditions such as spinal cord injury, stroke, and multiple sclerosis often lose the ability to stand and walk. Robotic hip-knee-ankle-foot exoskeletal orthoses have become commercially available and may allow some of these people to stand and walk again. These devices may also have applications beyond mobility, such as exercise, amelioration of secondary complications related to lack of ambulation, and the promotion of neuroplasticity. The authors present a framework for assessment of the usability of robotic exoskeletal orthoses available now or in the near future. Th

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Upper extremity myoelectric prostheses are expensive. The Robohand demonstrated that three-dimensional printing reduces the cost of a prosthetic extremity. The goal of this project was to develop a novel, inexpensive three-dimensional printed prosthesis to address limitations of the Robohand.
TECHNIQUE: The prosthesis was designed for patients with transradial limb amputation. It is shoulder-controlled and externally powered with an anthropomorphic terminal device. The user can open and close all five fingers, and move the thumb independently. The estimated cost is US$300.

BACKGROUND: Haemangioma of the adult larynx is an uncommon, benign lesion. The optimal surgical method of treating these lesions is controversial because only very limited case series are available. This paper reports the results of transoral robotic resection of a supraglottic haemangioma in an adult and reviews the literature.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 58-year-old woman presented having experienced a lump-in-the-throat sensation for 1 year. Investigations on laryngoscopy revealed a lobulated, dark red mass in the region of the supraglottis. This was successfully excised by transoral robotic ex

Multiple diagnostic and treatment paradigms exist for the management of carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP) metastatic to cervical lymph nodes. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has emerged as a modality for diagnosis and treatment of CUP, optimizing identification and resection of the primary tumor, although also preventing chemotherapy in a subset of patients. This article presents the authors' treatment paradigm and reviews the literature supporting the use of TORS in the management of CUP.

Bloody otorrhagia in the perioperative period is an uncommon event. We present a case of bilateral bloody otorrhagia after uncomplicated robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy in a 66-year-old man. Anesthetic management was unremarkable. No symptoms were noted by the patient. Postoperative otolaryngology evaluation revealed bilateral ear canal hematomas with intact tympanic membranes. The patient was discharged with Ciprodex ear drops on postoperative day 1. One-month otolaryngology follow-up revealed no long-term sequelae. Although the etiology is unclear, there seems to be a trend in th

In this article we present STARbot, a bioinspired legged robot capable of multiple locomotion modalities by using large deformation of its skeleton. We construct STARbot by using origami-style folding of flexible laminates. The long-term goal is to provide a robotic platform with maximum mobility on multiple surfaces. This paper particularly studies the quasistatic model of STARbot's leg under different conditions. We describe the large elastic deformation of a leg under external force, payload, and friction by using a set of non-dimensional, nonlinear approximate equations. We developed a tes
