A case of neonatal tsutsugamushi disease diagnosed with the aid of rickettsial macrogenomic detection.

BACKGROUND: Tsutsugamushi, also known as bush typhus, is a naturally occurring disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. We reported a case of vertical mother-to-newborn transmission of Orientia tsutsugamushi infection in a newborn from Yunnan (China). CASE PRESENTATION: Decreased fetal movements were observed at 39 weeks of gestation. After birth, the newborn (female) had recurrent fever, shortness of breath, and bruising around the mouth and extremities. At 5 h 58 min of age, the newborn was admitted for fever, shortness of breath and generalized rash. The liver was palpable 3 cm below the

Infections and Influencing Factors of Pathogens in Rattus norvegicus along the Zengjiang River in Guangzhou, China.

Background: Rattus norvegicus can carry and transmit various zoonotic pathogens. Some studies were conducted to investigate a few zoonotic pathogens in Guangzhou, China, but no coinfections were investigated or specifically mentioned. Studies on the infections and the influencing factors of various zoonotic pathogens in R. norvegicus along the Zengjiang River in Guangzhou have not been carried out. Materials and Methods: In this study, R. norvegicus was captured in November 2020 and September 2021 along the Zengjiang River, and was tested for Bartonella spp., Leptospira spp., Orientia tsutsuga

[Septic shock with multiple organ failure after returning from Southeast Asia].

For a patient recently returned from a tropical country in intensive care, the leading hypothesis for a fever leading to multiple organ failure is evidently malaria. Nonetheless, many other causes are possible and should be considered: parasites, viruses, and bacteria. A multidisciplinary discussion between specialists in emergency medicine, radiology, pathology, and infectious diseases is essential to start appropriate treatment as quickly as possible without impairing the patient's prognosis.

[Occurrence of Tsutsugamushi disease infection by Orientia tsutsugamushi, Kawasaki serotype, in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan].

Of 95 Tsutsugamushi disease case occurring in Yamagata prefecture from 1999 to 2006, four-all women-involved the O. tsutsugamushi Kawasaki serotype. The three major symptoms were fever, exanthema, and eschar present from mid-October to early November. Serodiagnosis by indirect immunofluoresence assay showed elevated IgG and IgM antibody titers against the Kawasaki serotype antigen, with IgM higher than IgG. Nested PCR detected 56-kDa DNA in three of the cases. DNA was amplified in Kawasaki-specific PCR. Two cases for which sequencing was done using nested PCR-amplified DNA showed an identity o

Review of a case of tsutsugamushi disease showing myocarditis and confirmation of Rickettsia by endomyocardial biopsy.

A patient suffering from tsutsugamushi disease underwent endomyocardial biopsy for the purpose of diagnosis of myocarditis. Proliferation of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi was observed in the vascular endothelial cells of the myocardium. There have been no reports describing the identification of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi endomyocardial biopsy. This report indicates that endomyocardial biopsy may be a useful adjunct to the clarification of myocardial involvement of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi.

A ten years experience on diagnosis of rickettsial diseases using the indirect immunoperoxidase methods.

An accurate diagnosis of Tsutsugamushi disease (TD) can be made within a few hours after receiving serum specimens by detecting the specific IgG and IgM antibodies in the patient's serum. Using the indirect immunoperoxidase test we found a total of 730 cases of TD in 32 out of 47 prefectures when serum samples from 2,224 cases of suspected disease or fever of unknown origin or from patients with febrile exanthema of unknown cause were examined during a 10 years period (from May 1980 till December 1989). In addition, 27 cases of spotted fever group rickettsial infection were confirmed and one c

Evidence for infection caused by spotted fever group Rickettsia in Kyushu, Japan.

Of 50 cases that gave negative immunofluorescence reaction with Rickettsia tsutsugamushi among patients with suspected tsutsugamushi disease encountered in Miyazaki Prefecture during the last four years, three showed a significant rise in the antibody titer to Rickettsia montana, a species of spotted fever group. This paper reports evidence for the occurrence of the rickettsial infection of the spotted fever group in Kyushu, Japan.

The effect of mouse age on the determination of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi virulence.

The effect of age on the susceptibility of ICR mice to lethal intraperitoneal (ip), Rickettsia tsutsugamushi infections was tested with five virulent strains--Karp, Kato, Gilliam, TA763, and TH1817--and three strains of reduced virulence--TA678, TA686, and TA716. Susceptibility differences were noted only in the ICR mice inoculated with two of the strains of reduced virulence, TA716 and TA678. With both strains, mice in the 12-weeks and younger age groups had lower death rates than did mice in the 21-weeks and older age groups. Also, CBA/CaJ mice of varying ages were inoculated intravenously w
