Enhancement of hybrid organohydrogels by interpenetrating crosslinking strategies for multi-source signal recognition over a wide temperature range.

With substantial temperature differentials between summer and winter in polar regions, there exists a pressing necessity for flexible sensors capable of functioning across a broad temperature spectrum to facilitate the construction of a more intelligent human-machine interface. Nevertheless, developing flexible sensors resilient to extremely low temperatures remains a significant challenge. In this study, we present an organohydrogel capable of functioning ranging from ambient to -78 °C, enabling real-time monitoring of multi-source signals, including motion, physiology, speech, and pressure.

Retrospective cohort study rethinking lip reconstruction: Versatility of the depressor anguli oris myocutaneous flap for large full-thickness defects.

BACKGROUND: Large full-thickness lip defects present a reconstructive challenge. OBJECTIVE: To describe the impact on clinical outcomes and institutional cost of the depressor anguli oris myocutaneous (DAOM) flap as an axial pattern transposition flap for reconstruction of large, full-thickness lip defects. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective cohort study of adults with large full-thickness lip defects who underwent DAOM flap reconstruction from 2011 to 2018 was conducted. DAOM flap anatomy and surgical technique were reviewed. The primary outcome of flap viability as well as additional cli

The impact of tinnitus distress on cognition.

Tinnitus is the chronic perception of a phantom sound with different levels of related distress. Past research has elucidated interactions of tinnitus distress with audiological, affective and further clinical variables. The influence of tinnitus distress on cognition is underinvestigated. Our study aims at investigating specific influences of tinnitus distress and further associated predictors on cognition in a cohort of n = 146 out-ward clinical tinnitus patients. Age, educational level, hearing loss, Tinnitus Questionnaire (TQ) score, tinnitus duration, speech in noise (SIN), stress, anxiet

Self-Healing, Highly Sensitive Electronic Sensors Enabled by Metal-Ligand Coordination and Hierarchical Structure Design.

Electronic sensors capable of capturing mechanical deformation are highly desirable for the next generation of artificial intelligence products. However, it remains a challenge to prepare self-healing, highly sensitive, and cost-efficient sensors for both tiny and large human motion monitoring. Here, a new kind of self-healing, sensitive, and versatile strain sensors has been developed by combining metal-ligand chemistry with hierarchical structure design. Specifically, a self-healing and nanostructured conductive layer is deposited onto a self-healing elastomer substrate cross-linked by metal

Preoperative FDG-PET temporal lobe hypometabolism and verbal memory after temporal lobectomy.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship of preoperative fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET asymmetry in temporal lobe metabolism and memory outcome after anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL). METHODS: In a university-based epilepsy surgery center, 60 ATL patients (27 left, 33 right) were divided into two groups: no/mild (n = 21) or moderate/ severe (n = 39) asymmetry in temporal lobe hypometabolism as determined by FDG-PET. All patients were nonretarded, at least 18 years of age, left-hemisphere speech dominant, without MRI abnormalities other than hippocampal atrophy, and with unilateral temporal lobe

[A lateralized reduction of NAA in a case of corticobasal degeneration (CBD): application of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS)].

We studied the application of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) in a case of corticobasal degeneration. A 73-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for dysarthria and clumsiness in right arm movement. Intelligence was normal and neither ideational apraxia or ideomotor apraxia were observed. Her speech was slurred and extremely slow. Neurological findings showed a limitation of ocular upward gaze movement, impaired smooth pursuit in the horizontal gaze, rigidity, limb kinetic apraxia and cortical sensory disturbance in the right arm. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed di

Cognitive development and behaviour in very low birthweight twins at four years.

This study included two groups of 37 children, one of twins and the other singletons at 4 years of age. All subjects has birthweights under 1500 grams and individuals in the groups were matched for birth date, gender and birthweight. Except when parental socio-economic status was taken into account, no significant differences between twins and singletons were observed on any of the results of The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, nor were there any when the twins and singletons were divided into groups with birthweights < 1000 grams and 1000 to 1499 grams. When cognitive scores were analysed

Cognitive skills in achondroplasia.

Increased intracranial pressure and ventricular and subarachnoidal dilatation are common manifestations in achondroplasia. They rarely lead to major neurologic and/or psychomotor deficits and neurosurgical intervention is seldom needed. The present study was undertaken to detect signs of minor cerebral dysfunction and discuss possibilities of their prevention. Thirty children with achondroplasia were compared to 3 control groups: their next-born sibs, 30 children with other forms of dwarfism, and 30 children with normal height. Early development was assessed by means of questionnaires. Cogniti

[Slowly progressive dysarthria and impaired language function--a case report].

A 68-year-old right-handed woman was admitted to Tokyo Metropolitan Geriatric Hospital because of slowly progressive dysarthria and writing disability over 2-year period. On admission, severe dysarthria was observed, but no dysphagia. The dysarthria mostly resembled a type of pseudobulbar palsy, although it was associated with effortful speech production. An oro-facial apraxia was also found. She could name objects, and could understand spoken words correctly. Examination using the Western Aphasia Battery showed diminution of word fluency, impaired repetition and perseveration and writing erro

[Psychometric speech studies in Alzheimer's dementia with the Aachen aphasia test].

Dementias of the Alzheimer type seem to be frequently accompanied by language disturbances. These may represent a feature which can be of help in distinguishing them from other types of dementias. We used the Aachen aphasia test in 32 patients suffering from Alzheimer dementia according to research criteria, and a mixed sample of 35 patients suffering from other dementias. From these 2 groups 2 subsamples of 21 patients each were gathered which were comparable with regard to age, disease onset, level of education, verbal intelligence and severity of senility. Nevertheless it was possible to di

Bulbar Problems Self-Reported by Children and Adults with Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is hereditary motor neuron disorder, characterised by the degeneration of motor neurons and progressive muscle weakness. It is caused by the homozygous loss of function of the survival motor neuron (SMN) 1 gene. SMA shows a wide variability of disease severity. OBJECTIVE: To investigate self-reported bulbar problems in patients with SMA, and their relationship to age, functional motor scores and active maximum mouth opening. METHODS: We used the Diagnostic List of Dysphagia and Dysarthria in (pediatric) patients and relevant recent clinical data from

Electrophysiological indices of phonological impairments in dyslexia.

PURPOSE: A range of studies have shown difficulties in perceiving acoustic and phonetic information in dyslexia; however, much less is known about how such difficulties relate to the perception of individual words. The authors present data from event-related potentials (ERPs) examining the hypothesis that children with dyslexia have difficulties with processing phonemic information within spoken words compared to age-matched readers with typical development. METHOD: The authors monitored ERPs to auditory words during a simple picture-word matching task. The key manipulation was the inclusion

Prelinguistic communication development in children with childhood apraxia of speech: a retrospective analysis.

In a retrospective study of prelinguistic communication development, clinically referred preschool children (n = 9) aged 3-4 years, who as infants had failed a community-based screening program, were evaluated for features of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Four children showed no features and either delayed or normal language, five had from three-to-seven CAS features and all exhibited delayed language. These children were matched by age with 21 children with typically-developing (TD) speech and language skills. Case-control comparisons of retrospective data from 9 months of age for two pa

A new design for free flap reconstruction of the tongue and oropharynx.

Radical resection of tongue and oropharyngeal carcinomas often results in complex defects that are challenging to reconstruct. Furthermore, remaining function should not be disturbed by the reconstruction. We introduce a new flap design and monitored swallowing and speech following reconstruction of complex oral defects. The new design consists of four lobes on a single pedicle. The first reconstructs the tongue, the second the tongue base, the third the oral floor, and the fourth the lateral wall. The records of cases performed between July 2002 and December 2006 were reviewed. Twenty-three p

Teenagers with Jimson weed (Datura stramonium) poisoning.

We report 2 cases of teenagers who were poisoned with Jimson weed (Datura stramonium) and presented to the emergency department with a severe acute anticholinergic toxidrome after ingestion of several hundred seeds. The patients presented with visual hallucinations, disorientation, incomprehensible and nonsensical speech, and dilated sluggish pupils. Both patients required restraints for combativeness until adequate sedation with lorazepam and haloperidol was achieved. Jimson weed is found in southern Canada and the United States and can cause acute anticholinergic poisoning and death in human

Native language predictors of foreign language proficiency and foreign language aptitude.

Fifty-four students were tested at specific time intervals over 10 years to determine best native language (NL) predictors of oral and written foreign language (FL) proficiency and FL aptitude. All participants completed two years of Spanish, French, or German. Each was administered measures of NL literacy, oral language, and cognitive ability in elementary school. A measure of FL aptitude was administered at the beginning of ninth grade and FL proficiency was evaluated at the end of the 10th grade. Among the variables, NL literacy measures were the best predictors of FL proficiency, and NL ac
