PURPOSE: Retrospective evaluation of the safety and effectivity of CT-guided percutaneous thoracal sympathicolysis (CT-TSL) in the treatment of patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) of the upper limb and chronic thoracal pain syndromes. To clarify the behavioral characteristics of rats neonatally treated with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), their performance on 4 aversive learning tasks, 3 active (shuttle, one-way, and rearing) avoidance tasks and one passive (step-through) avoidance task, was examined. A sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for nerve growth factor (NGF) has been developed. The sensitivity of this assay (0.1 pg/well) permits the quantification of endogenous immunoreactive NGF in the peripheral nervous system and the CNS. Studies on the regulatory mechanisms involved in NGF production indicate that, in addition to neurally mediated mechanisms, other stimuli, e.g., inflammation, significantly contribute to NGF production.

Twenty-one percutaneous neurolyses of the upper thoracic sympathetic chain were performed in 12 patients with CT guidance by a single injection of 1 to 3 ml of phenol at the level of Th3. Results were assessed after a follow-up period varying from 4 to 33 months. Three patients with hyperhidrosis had immediate and complete disappearance of symptoms, but only one patient remained dry. In 7/14 procedures done for Raynaud's disease symptoms disappeared or diminished. These long term results are competitive with surgery. Three transitory Horner syndromes and one pneumothorax occurred.

In human plasma, the concentration of free dopamine (DA) is approximately equal to that of epinephrine (E). We have systematically reviewed the literature concerning iatrogenic chylothorax and shall report our personal observations on the subject. Despite an increasing number of thoracic operations, injuries to the thoracic duct are infrequent. Cardiovascular and esophageal procedures are the most frequent causes of chylothorax. Malformations of the thoracic duct and other organs of the mediastinum have often been involved in lymphatic injury. Consequently, we believe that a complicating chylothorax may result from varied causes rather than solely from a surgical error.
