Equidistance between primary sensory-motor landmarks shapes functional specialisation in the human brain.

The human cortex is organized around primary sensory-motor landmarks, but the way these distances shape large-scale functional organization remains unclear. Using geodesic measures in males and females, we show that global minimum distance to sensory-motor landmarks aligns with the principal gradient of intrinsic connectivity, reflecting the shift from unimodal to heteromodal cortex, while equidistance between landmarks captures complementary organizational patterns. Heteromodal networks, including default mode, control, and limbic systems, occupy cortical regions that are both distant from pr

Improving Alzheimer's disease diagnosis by hyperspherical weighted adversarial learning in open set domain adaptation.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline and memory loss. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) plays a key role in detecting AD in Computer-aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems. However, variations in MRI scanners and imaging protocols introduce domain shifts, which significantly degrade model performance. Additionally, CAD models may misdiagnose unfamiliar neurodegenerative diseases not represented during training. In these complex and diverse clinical scenarios, employing closed set domain adaptation methods to achieve accurate diagnosis of

Gephyrin phosphorylation facilitates sexually dimorphic development and function of parvalbumin interneurons in the mouse hippocampus.

The precise function of specialized GABAergic interneuron subtypes is required to provide appropriate synaptic inhibition for regulating principal neuron excitability and synchronization within brain circuits. Of these, parvalbumin-type (PV neuron) dysfunction is a feature of several sex-biased psychiatric and brain disorders, although, the underlying developmental mechanisms are unclear. While the transcriptional action of sex hormones generates sexual dimorphism during brain development, whether kinase signaling contributes to sex differences in PV neuron function remains unexplored. In the

Leveraging anatomical constraints with uncertainty for pneumothorax segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Pneumothorax is a medical emergency caused by the abnormal accumulation of air in the pleural space-the potential space between the lungs and chest wall. On 2D chest radiographs, pneumothorax occurs within the thoracic cavity and outside of the mediastinum, and we refer to this area as "lung + space." While deep learning (DL) has increasingly been utilized to segment pneumothorax lesions in chest radiographs, many existing DL models employ an end-to-end approach. These models directly map chest radiographs to clinician-annotated lesion areas, often neglecting the vital domain knowl

Impacts of cognitive flexibility on central word identification: evidence from poor comprehenders' discourse comprehension of first graders with ADHD.

Cognitive flexibility (CF) is an executive function component related to the ability to flexibly shift amongst multiple incompatible perspectives or descriptions of an object task. However, whether CF enhances the narrative discourse comprehension of students with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) during surface semantic meaning identification remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the impacts of CF on central word (CW) identification amongst primary school students with ADHD and reading comprehension difficulties (i.e. scores in the ≤ 25th percentile of discourse comprehen

Progressive recruitment of contralesional cortico-reticulospinal pathways drives motor impairment post stroke.

KEY POINTS: Activation of the shoulder abductor muscles in the arm opposite a unilateral brain injury causes involuntary increases in elbow, wrist and finger flexion in the same arm, a phenomenon referred to as the flexion synergy. It has been proposed that flexion synergy expression is related to reduced output from ipsilesional motor cortex and corticospinal pathways. In this human subjects study, we provide evidence that the magnitude of flexion synergy expression is instead related to a progressive, task-dependent recruitment of contralesional cortex. We also provide evidence that recruitm

Semantic memory recognition is supported by intrinsic recollection-like processes: "The butcher on the bus" revisited.

Dual-process models suggest that recognition memory is independently supported by recollection and familiarity. Current theories attribute recollection solely to hippocampally mediated episodic memory (EM), and familiarity to both episodic and semantic memory (SM) supported by medial temporal lobe cortex (MTLC) and prefrontal cortex. We tested whether, contrary to this view, recollection-like processes also intrinsically support SM recognition and whether MTL structures are involved in their execution. A semantic process dissociation procedure (PDP) with famous and non-famous names was used in

Pain Enhances the Auditory P2 but Attenuates Mismatch Response and P3a.

BACKGROUND: Auditory input is known to modulate the perception of pain, yet the reciprocal influence, how pain affects auditory processing, remains less well understood. We investigated how continuous tonic pain dynamically alters auditory cortical responses in humans. METHODS: Using a three-stimulus auditory oddball paradigm combined with EEG, we recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) while participants experienced thermal stimulation under three conditions: baseline, non-painful warmth, and pain. We examined multiple stages of auditory processing, including early sensory encoding (N1, P2)

Functionally Guided Graph Learning for Robust Cross-Patient Cell-Type Annotation in Single-Cell RNA Sequencing.

Cross-patient cell-type annotation in single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) remains challenging due to pronounced interpatient heterogeneity and distribution shifts across patient-specific cellular contexts. Conventional annotation approaches often rely on proximity-driven graph construction or expression similarity, which may introduce spurious cell-cell connections and lead to unstable knowledge transfer across patients. To address this limitation, we propose PathoGraph, a functionally guided graph learning framework for robust cross-patient cell-type annotation. The proposed method integra

Hysteresis effects in visual and auditory perception and the comparison of underlying neural mechanisms - an EEG study.

Perceptual hysteresis-the tendency to maintain a current percept even as sensory input shifts towards an alternative interpretation-provides a useful model for studying how recent perceptual history stabilises ongoing perception. The present EEG study, to our best knowledge, provides the first side-by-side examination of the neural correlates of visual and auditory hysteresis within a common experimental and analytical framework. In two experiments, participants viewed ambiguous Necker cubes or listened to ambiguous Shepard tones. In both modalities, stimuli were presented either in a sequenti

The hippocampus as a small-world cognitive map.

When a mouse perceives a hawk's shadow, it may have only seconds to decide where to run, yet the safest refuge is often neither visible nor nearby. To survive, it must search its cognitive map quickly enough to choose among many possibilities, and accurately enough to avoid dead ends and hazards along the way, all while what counts as "safe" changes as paths, refuges, and threats shift with time. This scenario highlights a core design problem: cognitive maps must preserve fine local structure for reliable action, yet remain globally searchable so that distant, useful solutions can be found eff

No Evidence for Cognitive Impairment in an Experimental Rat Model of Knee Osteoarthritis and Associated Chronic Pain.

Although chronic pain states have been associated with impaired cognitive functions, including memory and cognitive flexibility, the cognitive effects of osteoarthritis (OA) pain remain to be clarified. The aim of this study was to measure cognitive function in the mono-iodoacetate (MIA) rat model of chronic OA-like knee pain. We used young adult male Lister hooded rats, which are well-suited for cognitive testing. Rats received either a unilateral knee injection of MIA (3 mg/50 µL) or saline as control. Joint pain at rest was assessed for up to 12 weeks, using weight-bearing asymmetry, and re

Predicting decompression surgery by applying multimodal deep learning to patients' structured and unstructured health data.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a common condition made up of a variety of anatomic and clinical subtypes. Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) and lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) are two subtypes highly associated with LBP. Patients with LDH/LSS are often started with non-surgical treatments and if those are not effective then go on to have decompression surgery. However, recommendation of surgery is complicated as the outcome may depend on the patient's health characteristics. We developed a deep learning (DL) model to predict decompression surgery for patients with LDH/LSS. MATERIALS AND METHOD: W

Pretreatment Alterations and Acute Medication Treatment Effects on Brain Task-Related Functional Connectivity in Youth With Bipolar Disorder: A Neuroimaging Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Disruptions in cognition are a clinically significant feature of bipolar disorder (BD). The effects of different treatments on these deficits and the brain systems that support them remain to be established. METHOD: A continuous performance test was administered to 55 healthy controls and 71 acutely ill youths with mixed/manic BD to assess vigilance and working memory during task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging studies. Patients, who were untreated for at least 7 days at baseline, and controls were scanned at pretreatment baseline and at weeks 1 and 6. After baseline te

Long-Term Mutual Training for the CYBATHLON BCI Race With a Tetraplegic Pilot: A Case Study on Inter-Session Transfer and Intra-Session Adaptation.

CYBATHLON is an international championship where people with severe physical disabilities compete with the aid of state-of-the-art assistive technology. In one of the disciplines, the BCI Race, tetraplegic pilots compete in a computer game race by controlling an avatar with a brain-computer interface (BCI). This competition offers a perfect opportunity for BCI researchers to study long-term training effects in potential end-users, and to evaluate BCI performance in a realistic environment. In this work, we describe the BCI system designed by the team Mirage91 for participation in the CYBATHLON

The effects of a spaceflight analog with elevated CO2 on sensorimotor adaptation.

Aboard the International Space Station (ISS), astronauts must adapt to altered vestibular and somatosensory inputs due to microgravity. Sensorimotor adaptation on Earth is often studied with a task that introduces visuomotor conflict. Retention of the adaptation process, known as savings, can be measured when subjects are exposed to the same adaptive task multiple times. It is unclear how adaptation demands found on the ISS might interfere with the ability to adapt to other sensory conflict at the same time. In the present study, we investigated the impact of 30 days' head-down tilt bed rest c

Reward deficits in behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia include insensitivity to negative stimuli.

During reward processing individuals weigh positive and negative features of a stimulus to determine whether they will pursue or avoid it. Though patients with behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia display changes in their pursuit of rewards, such as food, alcohol, money, and sex, the basis for these shifts is not clearly established. In particular, it is unknown whether patients' behaviour results from excessive focus on rewards, insensitivity to punishment, or to dysfunction in a particular stage of reward processing, such as anticipation, consumption, or action selection. Our goal was

Guided saccades modulate face- and body-sensitive activation in the occipitotemporal cortex during social perception.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has identified distinct brain regions in ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOTC) and lateral occipitotemporal cortex (LOTC) that are differentially activated by pictures of faces and bodies. Recent work from our laboratory has shown that the strong LOTC activation evoked by bodies in which the face is occluded is attenuated when the occlusion is removed. We hypothesized that this attenuation may occur because subjects preferentially fixate upon faces when present in the scene. Here, we experimentally manipulated subjects' fixations while they viewed

Motor strategies for initiating downward-oriented movements during standing in adults.

Sitting down and squatting are routine activities in daily living that lower the body mass by flexing the trunk and legs, but they obviously require different motor strategies for each goal posture. The former action must transfer the supporting surface onto a seat, whereas the latter must maintain the center of mass within the same base of both feet. By comparing the performance of both maneuvers, the mechanisms involved in initiating the downward-oriented movements and the process of optimizing the performance during their repetitions were studied. Twelve healthy subjects were asked to perfo
