14 cases of Pott's disease of the spinal column treated by surgery is described. The operation was performed by an anterior approach and evacuation of abscess, removal of granulation tissue, seguesterated bone and disc material achieved. Any mechanical compression by bony ridges, dense fibrotic tissue or fibrotic posterior longitudinal ligament was removed making it possible for anti TB treatment to have full effect. Stability of the spine was achieved by means of anterior bone grafts which accelerated bony fusion and eradication of the disease. It is stressed that this type of radical surgery

Between October 1968-1973, 16 rachitomies were carried out in 14 patients at the Univ. of Orthop. Hospital Balgrist in Zurich. The casuistic indicates the necessity for diagnostic surgery, particularly because tuberculous spondylitis cannot be differentiated radiologically from other nonspecific processes. Rachitomy together with histologic and bacteriologic examinations of precisely removed specimens makes a dependable diagnosis possible and permits therapeutic accommodation of the procedures to the individual case as 15 out of 16 of our cases indicate. The direct therapeutic possibilities an

As an infectious disease, tuberculosis (TB) is one of the major causes of death worldwide. Paleopathological and paleomicrobiological studies indicate a long standing association of the causative agent Mycobacterium tuberculosis and its human host. Since the occurrence and the epidemic spread of this pathogen seem to be closely linked to social and biological factors, it is of particular interest to understand better the role of TB during periods of social and nutritional change such as the Neolithic. In this study, 118 individuals from three sites in Saxony-Anhalt (Germany) dating to the Line

Common manifestations of tuberculosis of the central nervous system are tuberculous meningitis and intracranial tuberculomas. Cervical intramedullary tuberculomas are very rare in immunocompetent children. An unusual presentation of tuberculous meningitis with hydrocephalus and conglomerate cervical intramedullary tuberculomas in a 4-year-old boy is reported.

The clinical and radiological manifestations of suboccipital tuberculosis have been analyzed in 7 patients aged 7 to 35 years. A case of this condition accompanied by extensive vertebral destruction, abscesses, and basilar impression is described in a 7.5-year-old child. A radical stabilizing operation was successfully performed using the currently available technologies.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical value of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique in diagnosis of bone tuberculosis.
METHODS: PCR, standard light-microscopy and standard culture technique were used to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis in samples obtained from 60 patients with bone tuberculosis and 20 patients without bone tuberculosis. In the meantime, some factors affecting PCR result were analysed and methods to deal with them were discussed.
RESULTS: In the group of 60 patients with bone tuberculosis, the positive rate was 83% in PCR technique, 3% in standard light-microscope techniq

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cellular bone allografts, developed to provide osteogenic properties similar to autologous bone graft without donor site morbidity, are increasingly used in spinal fusion surgery; however, their clinical efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness relative to cell-free alternatives remain incompletely defined. Therefore, we sought to systematically review the clinical evidence on cellular bone allografts in spinal fusion, specifically evaluating fusion rates, complications, and cost.
METHODS: A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-complian

Background Low back pain is a common condition and carries substantial socioeconomic implications. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice with lumbar neural foraminal stenosis being one of the most common causes of lower back pain syndromes. Studies have shown a lack of correlation between patients' severity of disability and radiologically determined nerve root constriction. Therefore, the goal of this study will be to determine the frequency of severity of disability in patients with severe (i.e., grade III) lumbar neural foraminal stenosis on MRI to ascertain the

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevention and management of early complications associated with anterior cervical spinal surgery.
METHODS: From November 1998 to December 2006, 363 cases were treated with anterior cervical surgery, including 268 males and 95 females aged 17-79 years. In these cases, 224 suffered from cervical spondylosis, 39 from cervical disc herniation, 87 from cervical trauma, 9 from cervical tumor and 4 from cervical tuberculosis. Forty-eight cases with anterior cervical surgery were fused by autogenous iliac bones, 132 cases with anterior cervical surgery were fused by autogenou

BACKGROUND: Spinal mucormycosis is an exceptionally rare form of invasive fungal infection, with fewer than 12 confirmed cases reported in the prior literature. Immunocompromised patients are disproportionately affected, and mortality exceeds 50% in this population. Chronic liver disease as a primary predisposing condition is underrepresented in the existing case series.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old male with Child-Pugh Grade C chronic liver cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus, and hypothyroidism presented with progressive low back pain and bilateral lower limb weakness of one week duration. Lum

Various biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) have been applied for treating axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). However, there is a glaring absence of a bibliometric analysis on bDMARDs against axSpA. Articles related to use of bDMARDs in treating axSpA published from 2004 to 2022 were searched from the Web of Science Core Collection. VOS viewer 1.6.18 and CiteSpace 6.1.R2 were used to analyze and visualize the quantity and citations of publications, as well as to identify "research hotspots" and trends in this field. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effect of Halo-vest in treatment of unstable upper cervical spine.
METHODS: From March 1997 to October 2002, 16 cases of unstable upper cervical spines were treated and immobilized by Halo-vest, aged from 14 to 53 years. There were 3 cases of isolated Jefferson fractures, 4 cases of isolated Hangman fractures and 1 case of Anderson type I fracture. The 8 cases were immobilized for 3-4 months by Halo-vest. There were 3 cases of old odontoid fractures with dislocations treated by occipitocervical plate fixation and fusion, 1 case of C1 malignant tumor by post

From June, 1989 to March, 1991, 24 cases were treated in our department with the Dick technique. The study population included 7 patients with fresh horacolumber spine fracture, 10 with late spinal fracture (15 of the above 17 cases had incomplete paraplegia), 3 with ankylosing spondylitis, 2 with tuberculosis, and one each with spondylolisthesis and spine tumor. The results of these 24 cases were as follows. In the fresh fracture group, all the spine fractures were reduced completely. The 2 patients without neurological defects returned to work 3 months after operation. The 3 with incomplete

The therapeutic options for patients suffering from severe forms of spondyloarthritis (SpA) have been rather limited in recent decades. There is now accumulating evidence that anti-TNF therapy is highly effective in SpA, especially in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Based on the data recently published on what is now several hundred AS and PsA patients, this treatment seems to be even more effective than the same therapy in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The anti-TNF-alpha agents currently available, infliximab (Remicade); Centocor), etanercept (Enbrel); Amgen) and adali
