Accuracy of craniofacial measurements: computed tomography and three-dimensional computed tomography compared with stereolithographic models.

In a retrospective study, distance measurements of nine children with craniofacial malformation were analyzed. The accuracy of measurements was compared when measured on a workstation using a 16-slice multidetector spiral computed tomography and on a stereolithographic model. Three different methods of defining distances were investigated: 1) on the stereolithographic plastic models, 14 distances connecting landmarks were identified with a digitizer (Polaris Tracker); 2) the same distances were defined at axial, coronal, and sagittal reformats of the computed tomography data set and measured u

A new 3-D diagnosis strategy for duodenal malignant lesions using multidetector row CT, CT virtual duodenoscopy, duodenography, and 3-D multicholangiography.

Recent advances in multidetector row computed tomography (MD-CT) technology provide new opportunities for clinical diagnoses of various diseases. Here we assessed CT virtual duodenoscopy, duodenography, and three-dimensional (3D) multicholangiography created by MD-CT for clinical diagnosis of duodenal malignant lesions. The study involved seven cases of periduodenal carcinoma (four ampullary carcinomas, two duodenal carcinomas, one pancreatic carcinoma). Biliary contrast medium was administered intravenously, followed by intravenous administration of an anticholinergic agent and oral administr

Procedural specificity in laparoscopic simulator training: protocol for a randomised educational superiority trial.

BACKGROUND: The use of structured curricula for minimally invasive surgery training is becoming increasingly popular. However, many laparoscopic training programs still use basic skills and isolated task training, despite increasing evidence to support the use of training models with higher functional resemblance, such as whole procedural modules. In contrast to basic skills training, procedural training involves several cognitive skills such as elements of planning, movement integration, and how to avoid adverse events. The objective of this trial is to investigate the specificity of procedur

Normal molecular repair mechanisms in regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces allow recording of early spike activity despite immature myelination.

Clinical use of neurally controlled prosthetics has advanced in recent years, but limitations still remain, including lacking fine motor control and sensory feedback. Indwelling multi-electrode arrays, cuff electrodes, and regenerative sieve electrodes have been reported to serve as peripheral neural interfaces, though long-term stability of the nerve-electrode interface has remained a formidable challenge. We recently developed a regenerative multi-electrode interface (REMI) that is able to record neural activity as early as seven days post-implantation. While this activity might represent no

Characteristic changes in the physiological components of cybersickness.

We investigated the characteristic changes in the physiology of cybersickness when subjects were exposed to virtual reality. Sixty-one participants experienced a virtual navigation for a total of 9.5 min, and were required to detect specific virtual objects. Three questionnaires for sickness susceptibility and immersive tendency were obtained before the navigation. Sixteen electrophysiological signals were recorded before, during, and after the navigation. The severity of cybersickness experienced by participants was reported from a simulator sickness questionnaire after the navigation. The to

A Node-Based Workflow Management System for End-to-End and Human-in-the-Loop Medical Image Processing.

Traditional medical image processing pipelines often suffer from fragmented tools, tedious manual interactions, and a lack of reproducibility, hindering clinical translation. This paper introduces a comprehensive, node-based visual workflow management module integrated into the KoGa platform (our image preparation system), enabling reproducible, automated, and human-in-the-loop medical image curation, anonymization, segmentation, and report generation. The proposed system abstracts complex backend computational tasks into atomic, reusable processing nodes (e.g., DICOM/NIfTI converters, PyDefac

An Investigation of Manifold-Based Direct Control for a Brain-to-Body Neural Bypass.

Objective: Brain-body interfaces (BBIs) have emerged as a very promising solution for restoring voluntary hand control in people with upper-limb paralysis. The BBI module decoding motor commands from brain signals should provide the user with intuitive, accurate, and stable control. Here, we present a preliminary investigation in a monkey of a brain decoding strategy based on the direct coupling between the activity of intrinsic neural ensembles and output variables, aiming at achieving ease of learning and long-term robustness. Results: We identified an intrinsic low-dimensional space (called

A semi-automated "blanket" method for renal segmentation from non-contrast T1-weighted MR images.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the precision and accuracy of a new semi-automated method for kidney segmentation from single-breath-hold non-contrast MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The user draws approximate kidney contours on every tenth slice, focusing on separating adjacent organs from the kidney. The program then performs a sequence of fully automatic steps: contour filling, interpolation, non-uniformity correction, sampling of representative parenchyma signal, and 3D binary morphology. Three independent observers applied the method to images of 40 kidneys ranging in volume from 94.6 to 254.5 cm(

Comparison of high- and low equipment fidelity during paediatric simulation team training: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: High-fidelity patient simulators in team training are becoming popular, though research showing benefits of the training process compared to low-fidelity models is rare. We explored in situ training for paediatric teams in an emergency department using a low-fidelity model (plastic doll) and a high-fidelity paediatric simulator, keeping other contextual factors constant. The goal was to study differences in trainees' and trainers' performance along with their individual experiences, during in situ training, using either a low-fidelity model or a high-fidelity paediatric simulator.

Alternate item types: continuing the quest for authentic testing.

Many test developers suggest that multiple-choice items can be used to evaluate critical thinking if the items are focused on measuring higher order thinking ability. The literature supports the use of alternate item types to assess additional competencies, such as higher level cognitive processing and critical thinking, as well as ways to allow examinees to demonstrate their competencies differently. This research study surveyed nurses after taking a test composed of alternate item types paired with multiple-choice items. The participants were asked to provide opinions regarding the items and

[MR colography: technique, indications, and findings].

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has evolved as a powerful tool that has been applied more and more in recent years for the assessment of gastrointestinal structures, owing to its unsurpassed soft tissue contrast, lack of radiation exposure, and implementation of fast scanning techniques. As a virtual endoscopic technique, MR colography (MRC) makes it possible to image inflammatory processes and tumor disease of the large intestine with a high degree of accuracy. In this article we describe current techniques and applications of MRC and give an overview of clinical studies comparing MRC with o

Shared latent representations of speech production for cross-patient speech decoding.

Speech brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can restore communication in individuals with neuromotor disorders who are unable to speak. However, current speech BCIs limit patient usability and successful deployment by requiring large volumes of patient-specific data collected over long periods of time. A promising solution to facilitate usability and accelerate their successful deployment is to combine data from multiple patients. This has proven difficult, however, due to differences in user neuroanatomy, varied placement of electrode arrays, and sparse sampling of targeted anatomy. Here, by alig

A novel retinal ganglion cell quantification tool based on deep learning.

Glaucoma is a disease associated with the loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), and remains one of the primary causes of blindness worldwide. Major research efforts are presently directed towards the understanding of disease pathogenesis and the development of new therapies, with the help of rodent models as an important preclinical research tool. The ultimate goal is reaching neuroprotection of the RGCs, which requires a tool to reliably quantify RGC survival. Hence, we demonstrate a novel deep learning pipeline that enables fully automated RGC quantification in the entire murine retina. Thi
