Vestibular and audiometric results after endolymphatic mastoid shunt surgery in patients with Menière's disease.

PURPOSE: Treatment of Menière's Disease (MD) comprises an array of both non-destructive and destructive treatment options. In patients who are therapy-refractory to non-destructive medical treatment, endolymphatic mastoid shunt surgery (EMSS) is both recommended and debated controversially. The aim of this study was to investigate safety in terms of hearing, vestibular function, complication rate, and efficacy with regards to vertigo control of EMSS in patients with MD according to the current diagnostic criteria of 2015. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 47 consecutive patients with definit

Sensory organization of balance control in children with vestibular migraine and recurrent vertigo of childhood.

BACKGROUND: Migraine plays an important role in some subgroups of children with recurrent vertigo. Moreover, the migraine component varies from definite to possibly absent as defined in this spectrum of three disorders-vestibular migraine of childhood (VMC), probable VMC (pVMC), and recurrent vertigo of childhood (RVC). However, studies on the sensory organization of balance control in these three disorders are rare. OBJECTIVE: To explore the balance control of children with RVC, VMC, and pVMC, when the three sensory systems are challenged. METHOD: A retrospective analysis was performed on 1

Use of the head shake-sensory organization test as an outcome measure in the rehabilitation of an individual with head movement provoked symptoms of imbalance.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this case report is to highlight the Head Shake (HS) Sensory Organization Test (SOT) (HS-SOT) as an outcome measure in the rehabilitation of a patient with head movement provoked symptoms of dysequilibrium. Despite complaints of imbalance and head movement provoked symptoms, there are individuals who are able to score within normal limits on measures such as the SOT and Berg Functional Balance Test. The HS modification to the SOT can objectively identify abnormal vestibular inputs associated with head motion and maintaining balance. METHODS: This case re

Subclinical vestibulocerebellar dysfunction in migraine with and without aura.

OBJECTIVE: In patients with migraine, neurotologic symptoms and signs occur commonly. The authors' aim was to determine whether neurotologic findings are in accordance with the type of migraine and whether test findings differ from those of healthy controls. METHODS: The authors examined 36 patients with various types of migraine classified by International Headache Society criteria. Comprehensive neurotologic tests were performed between attacks: video-oculography (VOG), electronystagmography, static posturography, and audiometry on 12 patients with migraine with aura (MA) and 24 patients wi

Endolymphatic hydrops in the unaffected ear of patients with unilateral Ménière's disease.

PURPOSE: Current studies show that frequency tuning modification is a good marker for the detection of endolymphatic hydrops (EH) employing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with Ménière's disease (MD). The purpose of the present study is to analyze the auditory and vestibular function with audiometric and vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) responses, respectively, in both the affected and unaffected ears of patients with unilateral MD using MRI as diagnostic support for the degree of EH. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 76 consecutive patients

Saccular dysfunction in children with sensorineural hearing loss and auditory neuropathy/auditory dys-synchrony.

CONCLUSION: There is a correlation between the AN/AD disorder and the saccular dysfunction in children with severe sensorineural hearing loss, which means that saccular dysfunction can be a concomitant sign of AN/AD. In conclusion, the term of audio-vestibular dys-synchrony (AVS) is a more suitable description for this condition. OBJECTIVES: Patients with auditory neuropathy/auditory dys-synchrony (AN/AD) characteristically demonstrate poor neural responses from the vestibulocochlear nerve and brainstem while displaying evidence of intact outer hair cells function. Therefore, the objective of

[Role of external respiration in the formation of the autonomic component in motion sickness].

Time course variations in the ventilation and gas exchange functions of the lungs, gas composition and acid-base equilibrium of blood were investigated in 22 male test subjects, aged 27-49 years, who were kept in the head-down position (-8 degrees) and rocked in parallel swings. The subjects susceptible to motion sickness developed lung hyperventilation and concomitant alveolar-arterial hypocapnia and respiratory alkalosis which may potentiate a symptom-complex of vestibular disorders. To control hypocapnia, the subjects used a hypercapnic breathing mixture (4% CO2, 96% air). This eliminated t

Cortical representation of the vestibular system as evidenced by brain electrical activity mapping of vestibular late evoked potentials.

We examined the space and temporal distributions of the rotatory evoked brain electrical activity patterns (brain electrical activity mapping of vestibular evoked potentials [VestEP]) in humans. We performed a longitudinal scalp line analysis, transversal line analysis, and clockwise/counterclockwise rotation analysis of the VestEP principal components in 75 healthy persons aged 22 to 30 years (mean: 25.8). We found that the shortest VestEP latencies and the highest amplitudes were registered in a relatively distinct cortical area that is covered by the transversal electrode line T3-C3-Cz-C4-T

Mice lacking TrkB in parvalbumin-positive cells exhibit sexually dimorphic behavioral phenotypes.

Activity-dependent brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling through receptor tyrosine kinase B (TrkB) is required for cued fear memory consolidation and extinction. Although BDNF is primarily secreted from glutamatergic neurons, TrkB is expressed by other genetically defined cells whose contributions to the behavioral effects of BDNF remain poorly understood. Parvalbumin (PV)-positive interneurons, which are highly enriched in TrkB, are emerging as key regulators of fear memory expression. We therefore hypothesized that activity-dependent BDNF signaling in PV-interneurons may modulat
