BACKGROUND: Cortical venous injury can occur during any intracranial procedure with potentially severe consequences. We describe a simple technique that allowed for successful repair of a large cortical draining vein.

In a 30-month prospective study, we evaluated the efficacy of chlorine dioxide to control Legionella organisms in a water distribution system of a hospital with 364 patient beds and 74 skilled nursing beds. The number of hot water specimens positive for Legionella organisms decreased from 12 (60%) of 20 to 2 (10%) of 20. We report a longitudinal neuropsychological investigation of a patient with slowly progressive pure dysgraphia. Cognitive analysis of writing errors suggested a selective impairment of the graphemic buffer. After about seven years, the patient developed an apraxia of speech. RESULTS: 2 bypasses had to be redone because they stenosed; all 11 were patent at the time of writing (median follow-up 6 months, range 1-32 months).
CONCLUSION: The bypass effectively relieved symptoms of extrahepatic portal hypertension by restoring normal hepatic portal blood flow.

A retrospective analysis was conducted of 466 patients who underwent elective truncal vagotomy with antrectomy or hemigastrectomy for chronic duodenal ulcer. The postoperative (30-day) mortality was 1.1%. In 412 of 466 patients (88.4%), follow-up was obtained, and in 290 patients alive at the writing of this paper, the mean follow-up was 17.1 years; the remaining 54 patients (11.6%) were lost to follow-up. BACKGROUND: Lymphedema is a significant and disabling disorder affecting millions of people worldwide. Compression therapy is an important component of lifelong treatment but the specifics of appropriate compression garment selection and prescribing is not always well understood by practitioners and payers.
METHOD: An expert panel of the American Vein and Lymphatic Society was convened to write a Position Statement with explanations and recommendations for the appropriate compression therapy to be used in the treatment of lymphedema patients.
