The potential utility of a recombinant E. coli expressing the Neurospora crassa metallothionein gene (NCP) as a heavy metal biosorbent was investigated. It was shown that the NCP was capable of efficiently removing low levels of several metals (including cadmium, lead, and mercury) from solutions. The reusability of the NCP was demonstrated through 5 cycles of metal binding, stripping with dilute acid, and regeneration of the binding sites with out any adverse effect on the metal binding activity. The NCP was successfully encapsulated in alginate and acrylamide without any inhibitory effect on

Diatoms are environmentally responsive photosynthetic microorganisms whose growth dynamics and biosilicification processes are tightly regulated by external physicochemical conditions. However, conventional bulk cultivation and existing microfluidic platforms often fail to provide stable three-dimensional confinement together with dynamic environmental control, limiting long-term quantitative analysis at single-cell resolution. Here, we present a permeable hydrogel microreactor system integrated with microfluidic perfusion and a neural network-based image analysis workflow for on-chip investig

Porous flexible piezoresistive sensors are commonly used in wearable devices. To achieve excellent deformation capability, sensitive resistance changes, and stable signal input, such sensors must possess a robust skeletal structure and abundant pores. This not only effectively distributes external stress but also provides a larger contact area for conductive fillers. Inspired by leaf veins and natural concrete structures, this study developed a flexible sponge sensor with a “column-plate” architecture. This sponge utilizes sodium alginate and polyvinyl alcohol as “mortar” for its skeletal fram

The discharge of industrial wastewater containing refractory and toxic monomethylaniline (MMA) isomers poses a severe threat to aquatic ecosystems. To address this, a degrading bacterium, Rhodococcus pyridinivorans YY802, was isolated and immobilized in a composite carrier comprising sodium alginate (SA), bamboo charcoal (BC), and chitosan (CA). Strain YY802 demonstrated a versatile capacity to degrade o-, m-, and p-toluidine, with sodium pyruvate (SP) serving as a critical co-metabolic substrate to overcome substrate inhibition. Compared to single carriers, the SA+BC+CA composite provided a s

Fluorine is the most reactive nonmetallic element. Low fluoride concentrations in drinking water prevent dental caries, while excessive fluoride leads to fluorosis. To overcome the low fluoride (F⁻) removal efficiency and high cost of conventional ecological floating beds (EFBs), this study developed two slow-release materials (carbon-releasing and calcium-releasing) and fabricated an Fe-Al modified substrate primarily using oyster shells as the raw material, while integrating microbial-induced calcium precipitation technology to enhance the treatment efficiency of the "substrate-microbe" syst

Rosa roxburghii Tratt pomace (RRTP), a by-product generated during the processing of R. roxburghii Tratt fruit, is abundant in cellulose but remains largely underutilized. In this study, the cellulose (RCC) was isolated from RRTP and chemically modified to form its carboxymethyl derivative (RCMC). RCMC was then combined with sodium alginate (SA) at specific ratios (13:0, 6.5:3, 6.5:4, 6.5:5, 6.5:6, w/w) and crosslinked with Ca2+to construct five green hydrogels (RCMCH, RCMC/SA-3, RCMC/SA-4, RCMC/SA-5, RCMC/SA-6). Structural and texture analyses revealed that all hydrogels exhibited a three-dim

Indoxyl sulfate (IS), a protein-bound uremic toxin implicated in chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression and extrarenal pathologies, necessitates the development of accessible monitoring tools for point-of-care diagnostics. To address this challenge, we engineered a portable fluorescent capsule device by encapsulating an antenna-effect-enhanced europium metal-organic gel (EuMOG) within a biocompatible alginate matrix. This innovative sensor exhibits specific ratiometric fluorescence modulation toward IS via a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism, wherein IS binding triggers a distin

Multi-channel probes are important tools for accurate serodiagnostics. Yet, their use generally relies on expensive integrated equipment, which hinders their wide use in point-of-care diagnostics. In this study, we report a low-cost dual-channel probe Cu-S-ALG for the accurate quantification of H2S in serum by using inexpensive incandescent lamp and mobile phone with near-infrared camera as signal excitation and collection devices respectively. With thiol addition, the Cu-S-ALG nanogel is stabler than the conversional Cu-based nanogels in the presence of H2S, which makes it a low-cost and reli

Pharmaceutical contaminants (PCs) have emerged as a critical class of emerging pollutants in recent decades. Ribavirin (RBV), a broad-spectrum synthetic nucleoside antiviral targeting both RNA and DNA viruses, served as an important therapeutic option for epidemic viral infection. This study employed two distinct freshwater microalgae strains, Scenedesmus sp. SI-35 and Chlorella sp. SI-55, for RBV remediation, coupled with the development of a sustainable microalgae-immobilized hydrogel system with translational potential. The results demonstrated complete RBV removal within 18 days, with no s

Infectious diseases such as malaria, leishmaniasis, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) involve pathogens with complex life cycles that span multiple organs, including the bone marrow (BM), a niche for latent or cryptic infections. Studying these hidden stages in patients presents significant technical and ethical challenges, underscoring the need for advanced in vitro models such as organ-on-chip (OoC) platforms. While cell-laden hydrogels can replicate tissue-like 3D-microenvironments, their small mesh size may restrict pathogen migration and cell-pathogen interactions, both critical for

High-altitude sleep disturbance is a common symptom of acute mountain sickness, which can be alleviated via modulation of the gut-brain axis. Quercetin (Que) is used to modulate gut microbiota and serves as a potential drug to regulate the gut-brain axis, but the poor solubility and bioavailability affect its biological functions. Here, Que nanoparticles (QNPs) were prepared with zein using an antisolvent method, and QNP-loaded calcium alginate hydrogel microspheres (QNP@HMs) were prepared using electrospinning technology to improve the gastrointestinal stability and intestinal adhesion of QNP

BACKGROUND: Local anesthetics are effective for regional anesthesia but have a relatively short duration of action. This motivates the development of sustained-release delivery systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether an in situ-forming hydrogel composed of poloxamers and alginate could prolong the duration of ropivacaine-induced sensory and motor blockade.
METHODS: In this randomized and blinded two-period cross-over study, 10 female sheep received ultrasound-guided sciatic nerve injections of either 200 mg ropivacaine poloxamer-alginate hydrogel (Rop-HG) or 200 mg, as a contro

The irrational use of natural compounds in the treatment of diseases can lead to serious side effects, especially hepatoxicity, and its toxic effects are usually cumulative and imperceptible. Therefore, an accurate sensing platform is urgently needed to monitor the hepatotoxicity of natural compounds. Here, we deposited a thermo-responsive alginate-RGD/Pluronic hydrogel to construct an in vitro three-dimensional(3D) hepar-platform, and a thorough validation was adopted to evaluate the bioprinted hepatic constructs. The engineered hepar-platform was then employed to access its biological respon

BACKGROUND: It has been previously suggested that the use of regenerative promoters, which include bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) or natural growth factors supplement such as platelet-rich concentrate (PRC) could promote cartilage regeneration. However, the notion that the concurrent use of both promoters may provide a synergistic effect that improves the repair outcome of focal cartilage injury has not been previously demonstrated. This study was thus conducted to determine whether the concomitant use of PRC could further enhance the reparative potential of MSCs encapsulate

Pressure sores remain common, with a prevalence of 5 to 9% and more than 70% occurring in patients over 70 years of age. They are often falsely ascribed to poor nursing care, but can more usefully be regarded as a potentially preventable complication of an acute immobility illness. Prevention involves identification of patients at risk, appropriate nursing care measures and the use of special equipment. Much of the special equipment is excessively complex and not validated by clinical trial work. The airwave system, polystyrene bead bed system and Vaperm mattress have been best studied and are

Extrusion-based bioprinting is a promising approach for developing novel clinical therapies for heart failure patients. Here, we present a protocol for bioprinting personalized human-scale cardiac patches incorporating human cardiac spheroids in a 1% silk fibroin/4% alginate/8% gelatin hydrogel. We describe steps for extrusion 3D bioprinting using a temperature-controlled hydrogel bioink. We also detail adjusting print parameters for optimal results. Although prepared for a specific experimental setup, the techniques described can be applied to other temperature-controlled biomaterials or extr

Patients are always looking for conservative, esthetic, and long-lasting dental restorations, and the technique used directly influences the longevity of the treatment. The location of the restoration in the mouth and the extent of the decay influence the treatment choice. The larger the dimensions of the cavity preparation, the greater the difficulties in restoring the tooth using direct techniques. The semidirect technique, when indicated, can achieve satisfactory results. It is a relatively easy procedure, consisting of tooth preparation to receive an indirect restoration, fabrication of an

In this study, we propose a new method for bioprinting 3D Spheroids to study complex congenital heart disease known as discrete subaortic stenosis (DSS). The bioprinter allows us to manipulate the extrusion pressure to change the size of the spheroids, and the alginate porosity increases in size over time. The spheroids are composed of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and we demonstrated that pressure and time during the bioprinting process can modulate the diameter of the spheroids. In addition, we used Pluronic acid to maintain the shape and position of the spheroids. Charact
