Several 'problem nutrients' are identified in complementary feeding of Guatemalan infants with continued breastfeeding using the concept of 'critical nutrient density'.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends nutritionally adequate complementary feeding (CF) through the introduction of indigenous foodstuffs and local foods while breastfeeding for at least 2 years. To determine the adequacy of the contribution of CF to the diets of Guatemalan infants at the 7th-12th month of life receiving high-intensity continued breastfeeding. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Critical nutrient densities for CF were modelled using age- and sex-specific energy and protein requirements assuming children to be at the 50th weight percentile of local peers and 15th

Effects of iron replenishment on iron, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium metabolism in iron-deficient rats.

We investigated the effect of Fe deficiency on the nutritive utilization of Fe, Ca, P and Mg in rats. Aside from the well known depletion of Fe in liver, femur and sternum with low values of Hb, Fe deficiency impaired Ca, P and Mg metabolism at different degrees. Iron deficiency altered Mg absorption, lowered the concentration of Ca in the liver, femur and sternum, raised the concentration of P and Mg in the liver, and decreased P in the femur. The altered status was not completely rectified by iron supplementation as the animals were still slightly anemic at the end of the study. The second p

Nutritional status of flexitarians compared to vegans and omnivores - a cross-sectional pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In the Western world, there has been a notable rise in the popularity of plant-based, meat-reduced flexitarian diets. Nevertheless, there is insufficient data on the nutritional status of individuals following this dietary pattern. The aim of this study was to investigate the intake and endogenous status of various nutrients in a healthy German adult study population consisting of flexitarians (FXs), vegans (Vs) and omnivores (OMNs). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, dietary intake of 94 non-smoking adults (32 FXs, 33 Vs, 29 OMNs) between 25 and 45 years of age was assessed

TAS2R38 bitter taste genetics, dietary vitamin C, and both natural and synthetic dietary folic acid predict folate status, a key micronutrient in the pathoaetiology of adenomatous polyps.

Taste perception may influence dietary preferences and nutrient intakes contributing to diet-related disease susceptibility. This study examined bitter taste genetics and whether variation in the TAS2R38 gene at three polymorphic loci (A49P, V262A and I296V) could alter dietary and systemic folate levels and dietary vitamin C intake, and whether a nutrigenetic circuit existed that might link bitter taste, folate/antioxidant status and risk for a colonic adenomatous polyp. TAS2R38 diplotype predicted bitter taste (PROP) phenotype (p value <0.00001) and red cell folate status (p=0.0179) consiste

Effect of orange and apple juices on iron absorption in children.

OBJECTIVE: To measure iron absorption in children from meals containing apple juice or orange juice so as to determine if iron absorption will be greater with orange juice because of its higher ascorbic acid content than apple juice, a noncitrus fruit juice that US children reportedly prefer. DESIGN: On 2 successive days, children consumed identical meals that included apple juice on one day and orange juice on the other, in random order. The meals were labeled with iron-57 on one day and iron-58 on the other. Iron absorption was measured from red blood cell incorporation of the iron stable i

Alternate strategies for improving iron nutrition: lessons from recent research.

Strategies such as dietary diversification and food fortification have yielded significant results in controlling iron deficiency anaemia in developed countries. Reducing the prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia in developing countries is still a matter of importance. The major factors responsible for iron deficiency anaemia in the vulnerable segments of developing countries are reduced intake and poor bioavailability of dietary iron. Dietary diversification and food-based approaches pose considerable challenges before they can be implemented on a wide scale. Anaemia control programmes based

Iron supplementation in pregnancy: is less enough? A randomized, placebo controlled trial of low dose iron supplementation with and without heme iron.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of low dose iron supplementation with and without a heme component, prescribed for women in the second half of pregnancy. METHOD: A randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial. Thirty-one women received a daily dose of 27 mg elemental iron in a product containing both heme iron and non-heme iron (Hemofer), 30 women received the same dose as pure non-heme iron with vitamin C (Collets jern med vitamin C), and 29 women received placebo. A double dummy technique was used to mask tablets. The women were tested for red

Diet and atherosclerosis.

Diet and atherosclerosis are closely linked, both aetiologically and therapeutically. The aetiological association can be demonstrated most satisfactorily in animal experiments. In human beings the evidence must necessarily be more indirect and is largely based on dietary trials and epidemiological surveys linking the intake of cholesterol and saturated fat with morbidity and mortality from coronary disease. A modifying influence which has gained increasing recognition over recent years is the individual response to a given diet. This variability appears to be largely genetically determined, c

Effects of hypoxia and iron on ascorbic acid-mediated cytotoxicity in prostate cancer cell lines.

Ascorbic acid (ASC) has long been proposed as a potential cancer co-treatment due to its specific toxicity towards cancer cells, but discrepancies between in vitro and in vivo studies suggest that external factors may modulate its cytotoxicity. Here, we investigate the impact of hypoxia and iron on the therapeutic effectiveness of ASC on prostate cancer cell lines. Hypoxia-induced increases in the EC50 of ASC in the prostate cancer cell lines PC-3, DU 145, LNCaP, and CWR22Rv1 but not in the prostate non-cancer cell lines RWPE-1 and TERT-PrECs. The synthetic androgen dihydrotestosterone did not

Redox signaling in ischemic postconditioning protection involves PKCε and Erk1/2 pathways and converges indirectly in Nrf2 activation.

Ischemic-postconditioning (iPostC) exerts cardioprotection by preserving redox homeostasis in the reperfused heart. This protective effect has been associated with the activation of endogenous antioxidant response driven by transcription factor Nrf2 and with the activation of 'reperfusion injury salvage kinases' (RISK) as PI3K, PKC and Erk1/2. Redox homeostasis is essential for normal cell physiology since reactive oxygen species (ROS) are crucial for processes that involve protein signaling. Thus, it has become clear that not only the perturbation of redox balance to oxidative state is delete

Mechanism of action of divicine in a cell-free system and in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-deficient red cells.

Favism is an acute hemolysis occurring in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)-deficient (Mediterranean variant) individuals after intake of fava beans. Divicine (D), 2,6-diamino-4,5-dihydroxypyrimidine, is present in high amounts in the beans, and is suspected to play a role in hemolysis. Its mechanism of action was studied in a cell-free system and in G6PD (Mediterranean variant)-deficient red cells (RBC). Upon hydrolysis of the inactive beta-glucoside vicine, reduced divicine is formed. Oxygen acts as a one- or two-electron acceptor; superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide are formed, re

Vitamin metabolism and requirements: some aspects reviewed.

Current knowledge concerning the metabolism and requirements of thiamine, riboflavine, vitamin B6, vitamin A, and vitamin C in the human is reviewed. The requirements of these nutrients appear to be the results of their excretory losses in the urine and faeces and through metabolic degradations. Although influenced by numerous factors, the catabolism appears in general to be the result of actions by degradative pathways unrelated to the biochemical or physiological functions of the vitamins. As a consequence, these excretory and catabolic losses cause continuous obligatory requirements for the

Manipulation of Nitric Oxide Levels via a Modified Hydroxyethyl Starch Molecule.

INTRODUCTION: Although the improving effect of nitric oxide (NO) donors has experimentally been demonstrated in shock, there are still no NO donor medications clinically available. Thiol-nitrosothiol-hydroxyethyl starch (S-NO-HES) is a novel molecule consisting of NO coupled to a thiolated derivative of hydroxyethyl starch (HES). It was aimed to assess the ability of S-NO-HES to serve as an NO donor under a variety of in vitro simulated physiologic conditions, which might be the first step to qualify this molecule as a novel type of NO donor-fluid. METHODS: We studied the effect of temperatur

Vitamin C effects on 5-hydroxymethylcytosine and gene expression in osteoblasts and chondrocytes: Potential involvement of PHD2.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid, AA) is a well-known regulator of bone and cartilage metabolism. However, the mechanisms of AA's action in these tissues are only partly understood. In this study, we confirmed that AA contributes to bone and cartilage metabolism by showing decreased articular cartilage and trabecular bone in AA-deficient spontaneous fracture (sfx) mutant mice. In vitro, we found that AA exerts differential effects on chondrocyte and osteoblast differentiation. Since AA is known to increase levels of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5-hmC) and induce DNA demethylation via the ten-eleven transl
