Mathematical models can aid in the understanding of the risks associated with the global spread of infectious diseases. To assess the current state of mathematical models for the global spread of infectious diseases, we reviewed the literature highlighting common approaches and good practice, and identifying research gaps. We followed a scoping study method and extracted information from 78 records on: modelling approaches; input data (epidemiological, population, and travel) for model parameterization; model validation data. We found that most epidemiological data come from published journal

Three conventional regression models were compared using the time-series data of the occurrence of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and several key climatic and occupational variables collected in low-lying land, Anhui Province, China. Model I was a linear time series with normally distributed residuals; model II was a generalized linear model with Poisson-distributed residuals and a log link; and model III was a generalized additive model with the same distributional features as model II. Model I was fitted using least squares whereas models II and III were fitted using maximum l

Extreme heat is the most significant climate threat to public health, disproportionately impacting marginalized groups, including outdoor workers, older adults, and low-income rural populations. While the physiological consequences of heat-related illness-ranging from cardiovascular strain to acute kidney injury-are well-documented, a critical gap remains in the equitable implementation of mitigation strategies. This paper examines North Carolina as a case study due to its proactive leadership in heat-health mitigation, examining the evolution of the state's Heat Health Alert System and the NC

Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) represents a major threat to global food security under increasingly variable climatic conditions. Current understanding is largely derived from controlled laboratory studies, whereas field PHS is a multi-scale phenomenon resulting from interactions among genetic regulation, spike and grain traits, heterogeneous environmental conditions, and agronomic management. Our knowledge of PHS mechanisms under field conditions remains limited, and a systematic, integrated control framework is still lacking. In this review, we synthesise advances in the genetic architecture, p

Climate change is altering breeding phenology patterns in different ways across regions, periods and species. We examined spatial and temporal variation in the breeding phenology of four Neotropical birds, specifically testing whether the magnitude of phenological shifts increases with distance from the equator, as previously reported for Northern Hemisphere species. We used data from 1310 clutches from Pitangus sulphuratus, Zonotrichia capensis, Tyrannus savana and Troglodytes aedon, spanning 1901-2020 and latitudes 32°N to -54°S. Breeding dates were analysed in relation to time, latitude and

Under the background of global climate warming, the impact of tropical cyclones (TCs) on mid-latitude semi-enclosed bays will be enhanced. A hydrodynamics-sediment model was used to study the impact of TCs on sediment transport in the Bohai Sea during the 21st century, further revealing the mechanism of TCs influence on sediment dynamic processes in semi-enclosed bays. During the 21st century, a total of 10 TCs have passed through the Bohai Sea, with the total suspended sediment flux (SSF) output from the Bohai Sea reaching 14.34 Mt. During TC events in the Bohai Sea, the Bohai Bay was the mai

In pasture-based systems, prepartum dairy cows can be exposed directly to weather conditions during the transition period. We aimed to determine how temperate climatic conditions during spring and autumn calving seasons affect transition dairy cows' lying and ruminating behavior in outdoor conditions. Behavior and meteorological data were extracted from two external experiments carried out during the spring calving season and the autumn calving season. Mixed models were used to determine the effects of weather conditions on daily lying and rumination behaviors. In the spring calving season, hi

Wetlands are vital carbon sinks and play a key role in climate regulation. However, climate change and human disturbances are altering wetland hydrology with water level fluctuations profoundly influencing carbon sequestration. While previous syntheses and modeling studies have suggested the existence of water level thresholds in wetland carbon dynamics, the mechanisms underlying these thresholds remain poorly understood, and field-based evidence is lacking. Here, we present results from a long-term field experiment across six water level treatments, ranging from 100 to 40 cm above the soil su

Mineralization of carbon dioxide in deep saline aquifers is an attractive potential means of permanent carbon sequestration in geologic formations. In this review, the basic principles, mechanisms, and current development of both in situ and ex situ mineralization have been explored with an emphasis on the importance of reservoir mineralogy, brine chemistry, and thermodynamic conditions in determining the characteristics of the reaction kinetics and formation of carbonates. Long-term storage security is guaranteed by the conversion of CO2 into stable carbonate minerals, which makes mineralizat

Aedes and Culex mosquitoes, known for spreading arboviruses like dengue and West Nile, thrive in cities, posing health risks to urban populations. Climate change can create suitable climatic conditions for these vectors to spread further in Europe. Cities contain numerous landscape and infrastructure elements, such as storm drains, that allow stagnant water build-up facilitating mosquito breeding. Modifying urban infrastructure to prevent water accumulation can reduce mosquito populations, but evidence is limited. The Public Health Agency of Barcelona, Spain, introduced a structural modificati

Compound soil drought and heat extremes are expected to occur more frequently with global warming, causing wide-ranging socio-ecological repercussions. Vegetation modulates air temperature and soil moisture through biophysical processes, thereby influencing the occurrence of such extremes. Global vegetation cover is broadly expected to increase under climate change, but it remains unclear whether vegetation greening will alleviate or aggravate future increases in compound soil drought-heat events. Here, using a suite of state-of-the-art model simulations, we show that the projected vegetation

Coccidioidomycosis, a fungal disease caused by soil-borne Coccidioides spp., exhibits pronounced seasonal transmission, with incidence in California typically peaking in the fall. However, the influence of climate on the timing and duration of transmission seasons remains poorly understood. Using weekly data on reported coccidioidomycosis cases in California from 2000-2023, we developed a distributed-lag Markov state-transition model to estimate the effects of temperature and precipitation on the timing of transmission season onset and end. We found that transitions from cooler, wetter conditi

West Nile (WNV) is a zoonotic arbovirus with an expanding geographical range and epidemic activity in Europe. Not having yet experienced a human-associated epidemic, Portugal remains an outlier in the Mediterranean basin. In this study, we apply ecological niche modelling informed by WNV historical evidence and a multitude of environmental variables from across Portugal. We identify that ecological backgrounds compatible with WNV historical circulation are mostly restricted to the south, characterized by a warmer and drier climate, high avian diversity, specific avian species and land types. The central USA experienced major flooding during spring 2019, with both the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers at major flood stage at several locations, causing levees to breach and widespread flooding. Here, we examine the total precipitation responsible for the spring 2019 flooding across the central USA from the perspective of weather types. We focus on the weather type (referred to as 'Midwest Water Hose' (MWH) (Zhang and Villarini. 2019 Climate Dynamics 53, 4217-4232. Dengue is a re-emerging disease, currently considered the most important mosquito-borne arbovirus infection affecting humankind, taking into account both its morbidity and mortality. Brazil is considered an endemic country for dengue, such that more than 1,544,987 confirmed cases were notified in 2019, which means an incidence rate of 735 for every 100 thousand inhabitants. Climate is an important factor in the temporal and spatial distribution of vector-borne diseases, such as dengue. Thus, rainfall and temperature are considered macro-factors determinants for dengue, since they directly infl

Eutrophication has threatened water resources worldwide, yet mechanistic understanding on controls of nutrient export remains elusive. This work tests the shallow and deep hypothesis: subsurface vertical chemical contrasts regulate nitrate export patterns under different land use conditions. We synthesized data from 228 watersheds and used reactive transport modeling (500 simulations) under broad land use, climate, and geology conditions. Data synthesis indicated that human perturbation has amplified chemical contrasts in shallow water (e.g., soil water) versus deep waters (e.g., groundwater),

Ebola virus disease outbreaks in animals (including humans and great apes) start with sporadic host switches from unknown reservoir species. The factors leading to such spillover events are little explored. Filoviridae viruses have a wide range of natural hosts and are unstable once outside hosts. Spillover events, which involve the physical transfer of viral particles across species, could therefore be directly promoted by conditions of host ecology and environment. In this report, we outline a proof of concept that temporal fluctuations of a set of ecological and environmental variables desc

Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, play vital role in reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and combating climate change. However, their stochastic behavior has an impact on modern electric networks. Hence, Modelling variability and uncertainty in optimal power flow (OPF) concerns is critical for ensuring dependable and environmentally friendly grid operations. This study investigates the impact of climate change on the integration of wind and solar energy into power systems, with a specific focus on how temperature variations affect the performance and optimal dispatch of wind t

BACKGROUND: The residential sector releases around 17% of global greenhouse gas emissions and making residential buildings more energy efficient can help mitigate climate change. Engineering models are often used to predict the effects of residential energy efficiency interventions (REEI) on energy consumption, but empirical studies find that these models often over-estimate the actual impact of REEI installation. Different empirical studies often estimate different impacts for the same REEI, possibly due to variations in implementation, climate and population. Funding for this systematic revi
