The serum immunoglobulins IgG, IgA, IgM and IgE were determined together with indirect haemagglutination test in normal subjects and in patients with intestinal and extra-intestinal amoebiasis. The IgG level in intestinal amoebiasis was found to be significantly higher than that of extra-intestinal. Although in intestinal amoebiasis, the concentrations of IgE were comparatively higher than extra-intestinal group, the IgE levels in both groups of amoebiasis were seen to be much higher than that of the normal group. No significant difference was found in the IgA and IgM levels between the three

Co-infection with Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica) and Giardia lamblia (G. lamblia) is exceptionally rare reported in individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), despite both protozoa being well-recognized etiologic agents of intestinal disease in the general population. The overlapping clinical manifestations of protozoal infections and inflammatory bowel disease may pose significant diagnostic challenges, particularly in patients with advanced immunosuppression. We report the case of a 34-year-old man with advanced acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) who presented with p…

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease primarily affecting the colon, characterized by mucosal inflammation and ulceration. Monocyte locomotion inhibitory factor (MLIF), a heat-stable pentapeptide derived from Entamoeba histolytica, has demonstrated the anti-inflammatory capacity. The aim of the current work was to test the protective effects of MLIF in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model. Our findings indicated that MLIF significantly inhibition of colitis development, including body weight, DAI score, colon length, and spleen index. MLIF slowing the …

Intestinal worm infections, referred to as helminthiases, represent a significant global health challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. These infections affect millions of people and contribute to malnutrition, anemia, and impaired cognitive development, particularly in children. Nitazoxanide, first described in 1975, was initially developed as a veterinary anthelmintic. It has shown efficacy against various pathogens including Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, and Cryptosporidium parvum. Recently, its use has expanded due to its observed in vitro activity against vi…

Intestinal protozoan parasites, including, Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, Entamoeba histolytica, and Blastocystis sp. pose significant global health challenges, particularly in developing regions with limited access to sanitation and healthcare resources. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as critical factors for communication in the complex interplay between intestinal protozoan parasites and their hosts. This review explores the diverse roles of parasite-derived EVs, with a focus on their biogenesis, molecular cargo, and host interactions. Studies show that G. duodenalis EV…

Amebic liver abscess (ALA), caused by Entamoeba histolytica, is prevalent in endemic regions such as Central/South America, Southeast Asia/India, and Africa but is considered rare in North America. Symptoms of E. histolytica infection typically emerge eight to 20 weeks after exposure in endemic areas. We present the case of a 58-year-old woman who developed right-sided abdominal pain, weakness, fever, and significant weight loss. Radiological imaging revealed a large, non-cystic hepatic mass, raising suspicion of malignancy. Notably, the patient had not traveled to an endemic region in the pas…

INTRODUCTION: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a vital treatment for various hematological disorders. However, HSCT recipients face increased risks of infectious complications due to immunosuppression. Parasitic infections are a significant concern in this vulnerable population and can lead to substantial morbidity and mortality. This review examines parasitic infections in HSCT recipients, focusing on major infections affecting different organ systems, including intestinal parasites (Giardia spp., Entamoeba histolytica, and Cryptosporidium spp.), hematologic parasites (Plasmo…

Intestinal parasites cause a significant public health problem worldwide due to the associated morbidities, mainly in infected school-aged c … revalence. There was, however, an increase in the prevalence of intestinal protozoans, specifically Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar (0.0%% vs. 36.0%), Blastocystis hominis (0.0%% vs. 40.1%), and Giardia duodenalis (5.6%% vs. 14.5%).
