In the elderly, even mild anaemia leads to significantly decreased quality of life and reduced survival rate. Therefore even mild anaemias s … d to a sufficient rise in the haemoglobin level, intravenous iron replacement therapy is indicated. Folic acid deficiency is generally treated orally, whereas vitamin B12 deficiency is generally treated by the parenteral - preferably subcutaneous - route. In anaemia due to chronic renal failure and anaemia due to myelodysplastic syndromes, the underlying cause must be …

Haematological indices, malarial parasitaemia, serum and red cell folate (SFA, RCF), serum vitamin B12 and haemoglobin (Hb) electrophoretic patterns were studied in 228 non-elite young Hausa primigravidae at less than 24 weeks of gestation. The study was conducted in the guinea savanna of Nigeria, where malaria is hyperendemic. Ninety-nine (43%) were anaemic (Hb less than 11.0 g dl-1). The commonest cause of anaemia was malaria, in 28% of all and 40% of anaemic subjects. Plasmodium falciparum was predominant; P. malariae was seen in 1.3% and P. ovale was not recorded. Parasitaemia was more fre

In response to the continuing high prevalence of anaemia recorded in the National Family Health Survey-5, the Indian government launched a policy for mandatory iron fortification of the rice provided through public nutrition programmes in India. This was done even though a rigorous evidence analysis had already concluded that rice fortification was not effective in preventing anaemia or iron deficiency at the population level. Fortification also poses a potential risk of iron toxicity over time, but there is no stated time period for the policy's implementation. The risk is particularly high i

Metabolic, biochemical, and hormonal changes occur in chronic renal failure usually associated with hyponutrition states. In predialysis patients, knowing the nutritional state about water-soluble vitamins such as thiamine, riboflavin, pyridoxine, cianocobalamine, and folic acid is becoming more and more important since some of the manifestations of chronic renal failure may be due to the deficiency of some of these water-soluble vitamins. The metabolic pathways in which most of these vitamins participate are interrelated and it is difficult to understand how the individual deficits of each vi

Celiac disease, or gluten-sensitive enteropathy, is an immune-mediated disease of the small bowel that results in malabsorption. It classically presents with gastrointestinal symptoms including chronic diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal bloating and anorexia. It is becoming more frequently identified in asymptomatic patients with a diagnosis of deficiencies related to malabsorption of iron, folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin D. It is increasingly identified as a cause for early or refractory osteoporosis. Occasionally, celiac disease presents with cutaneous manifestations alone. Dermatitis herp

RATIONALE: Cobalamin C (cblC) deficiency is one of the most common congenital vitamin B12 metabolic abnormalities, and may cause severe neurologic symptoms, gastrointestinal and nephritic symptoms.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 9-month-old boy presented with a 10-day history of progressive dyspnea and weak cough, accompanied by moaning, perioral cyanosis, and poor feeding. The parents also reported significant developmental regression and delay, characterized by an inability to raise his head, sit independently, or vocalize "dada" and "mama": milestones typically achieved by this age.
DIAGNOSIS: The p

BACKGROUND: Megaloblastic Anemia (MA) is a relatively common disease, yet the data on prevalence of MA remains scarce. This study was conduc … MA cases (p < 0.05). Forty five percent of MA patients presented with pancytopenia. Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency were documented in 40% and 25% cases respectively while combined deficiency was noted in 35% of all MA cases. There was no co-relation between severity of anemia and deficiency of either of the vitamins (Fischer exact test: 0.530). Among MA patients …

The universal MCV increase suggests unrecognized, inadequately treated, folic acid deficiency unmasked by an adequate iron supply. There was also improved well being. Effects were most clearly evident in patients with deficient iron stores.

BACKGROUND: Arsenic is a common environmental toxin. Exposure to arsenic (particularly its inorganic form) through contaminated food and drinking water is an important public health burden worldwide, and is associated with increased risk of neurotoxicity, congenital anomalies, cancer, and adverse neurodevelopment in children. Arsenic is excreted following methylation reactions, which are mediated by folate. Provision of folate through folic acid supplements could facilitate arsenic methylation and excretion, thereby reducing arsenic toxicity.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of provision of

A 21 year old male presented with a history of intermittent, transient neurological events. A brain MRI showed an area of restricted diffusion in keeping with an infarct, and an angiogram demonstrated an intracranial stenosis in the internal carotid artery, consistent with atherosclerosis. Laboratory investigations revealed a highly elevated plasma homocysteine, with low plasma folate and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and methionine at the lower end of the normal ranges. The homocysteine normalized following treatment with folic acid. Molecular analysis found heterozygosity for the common MTHFR c.6

Homozygotes for homocystinuria due to cystathionine synthase (CS) deficiency accumulate homocysteine and methionine in their blood and tissues. High-dose pyridoxin, folic acid, vitamin B12, or betaine are therapeutical options to lower the elevated homocysteine concentration. These compounds stimulate the transsulfuration or remethylation of homocysteine. Despite such treatment, elevated blood homocysteine concentrations may persist in many homocystinurics. Therefore, it is warranted to study alternative regimen to reduce the blood homocysteine concentration in homocystinurics. Apart from ente

This review focuses on the occurrence, prevention and treatment of anaemia during pregnancy in Western societies. Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is the most prevalent deficiency disorder and the most frequent form of anaemia in pregnant women. Minor causes of anaemia are folate and vitamin B12 deficiency, haemoglobinopathy and haemolytic anaemia. Anaemia is defined as haemoglobin of <110 g/L in the first and third trimester and <105 g/L in the second trimester. The diagnosis relies on haemoglobin, a full blood count and plasma ferritin, which can be supported by plasma transferrin saturation an

Though common in older adults, anaemia is unexplained in about one-third of cases. As a rare cause of anaemia and neutropenia, Cu deficiency could account for some cases of unexplained anaemia. We examined the relationship between serum Cu and unexplained anaemia among 11,240 participants in the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II): 638 (5.7% of all adults) were anaemic; 421 (3.7%) were not explained by deficiencies of vitamin B12, folate or Fe, chronic illness or renal disease. Spline regression showed a U-shaped relationship between serum Cu levels and unexplai

Background/Objectives: Fat-soluble 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) may be endogenously synthesized or obtained from dietary sources. Notably, it is crucial in calcium homeostasis, gene regulation, and immune system modulation, being even more relevant during prenatal stages, as the embryo utilizes vitamin D obtained from maternal plasma. Moreover, 25-OHD has been recently demonstrated to affect hematological parameters. We aimed to determine the correlation between maternal plasma 25-OHD levels, other blood parameters, and fetal anthropometric outcomes. Methods: Pregnant women attending an obstet

Vitamin D (VD) is a fat-soluble sterol that possesses a wide range of physiological functions. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of VD on folate metabolism in zebrafish and further investigated the underlying mechanism. Wild-type (WT) zebrafish were fed with a diet containing 0 IU/kg VD3 or 800 IU/kg VD3 for 3 wk. Meanwhile, cyp2r1 mutant zebrafish with impaired VD metabolism was used as another model of VD deficiency. Our results showed that VD deficiency in zebrafish suppressed the gene expression of folate transporters, including reduced folate carrier (RFC) and proton-coupled

People with severe substance use disorder (SUD) have a higher burden of micronutrient deficiency compared with the general population. The aim of this study was to investigate vitamin B12 status and risk factors of deficiency related to substance use, opioid agonist therapy (OAT), as well as hepatitis C infection and liver fibrosis. In this prospective cohort study, participants were recruited from outpatient OAT and SUD clinics in western Norway, and assessed annually with a clinical interview and exam, including venous blood sampling. Data were collected between March 2016 and June 2020, and

Adequate vitamin B12 (B12) and folate concentrations are essential for neural development in early childhood, but studies in well-nourished children are lacking. We investigated the relation between plasma B12 and folate at 9 and 36 months and psychomotor development at 36 months in well-nourished Danish children. Subjects from the SKOT cohorts with B12 measurement and completed Ages and Stages Questionnaire, 3rd edition (ASQ-3) at 36 months were included (n 280). Dietary intake, B12 and folate concentrations were collected at 9 and 36 months, and ASQ-3 was assessed at 36 months. Associations
