Structural modification of fipronil-5-amino and insecticidal activity evaluation of its derivatives against resistant Chilo suppressalis.

BACKGROUND: The resistant rice stem borer (Chilo suppressalis) poses a serious threat to rice yield and food security. For two decades, fipronil was a key insecticide for its control, but its use has been restricted owing to the toxicity of its degradation products to aquatic life and bees. To develop superior alternatives, we structurally modified fipronil-5-amino through acylation, benzylation and carbamation, and evaluated the insecticidal activity of the resulting derivatives against resistant C. suppressalis, as well as their toxicity to zebrafish and honeybees. RESULTS: Twenty-seven fip…

A combined genetic and chemical approach for identifying novel antifungal compounds against Fusarium graminearum.

UNLABELLED: Chemical fungicides act by targeting specific proteins or pathways, known as modes of action (MoAs). In this study, we establish … rspective on developing strategies to manage fungal pathogens with implications for agriculture and food security. The effectiveness of current fungicides is increasingly limited by resistance, narrow target ranges, and environmental concerns. By combining genetic approaches with chemical screening, this work offers a more systematic way to identify candidate a …

Valorization of Spirulina residue for magnetic layered double hydroxide functionalized biochar: Synergistic cadmium and arsenic adsorption, mechanism insights, and soil phytotoxicity mitigation.

The complex contamination of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in agricultural systems poses a serious threat to food security and human health. Developing materials capable of simultaneously immobilizing these two chemically distinct pollutants remains a major challenge in the field of environmental remediation. Inspired by the "waste treats waste" concept, this study innovatively utilizes industrial waste, Spirulina residue, as biomass material. Through magnetic modification and functionalization with layered double hydroxide (LDH), Fe-modified Spirulina residue biochar loaded with CaMgAl-LDH (F…

Is small really small? Re-characterising tuna fisheries in the Indian Ocean.

Small-scale fisheries (SSF) play a critical role in providing food security, livelihood, and employment. However, SSF have received less attention in the context of regional fisheries management and continue to be poorly understood and not well included in fishery management frameworks. The lack of understanding concerning SSF within regional fisheries management organisations (RFMOs) might be further exacerbated by the absence of a unified definition of SSF within RFMOs, which often undermines data collection and the general availability of information on SSF. This paper aims to trace SSF def…

A successful stacking of multiple biotic stress resistance in rice facilitated by genes and precision breeding tools.

BACKGROUND: Genetic improvement of rice for biotic stress is a major and continuous breeding objective owing to changing pest and disease scenarios. In response to climate change, an outbreak of new pathotypes and biotypes results in huge yield loss which directly impacts the economic stability and food security. The development of varieties with multiple resistance genes for a particular disease is the most effective approach to the combating mechanism against evolving pathogens and insects. Multiple resistance genes against blast (Pi54), bacterial leaf blight (xa5, xa13, Xa21), and brown pla…

Improving annotation, access, and comparison of nutritional composition data for underutilized crops.

Open and interoperable data infrastructures are essential to advancing food and nutritional security research, yet few data management systems are specifically designed for crop nutritional datasets that support seamless querying, visualization, and comparison. Existing data sources are often syntactically and semantically heterogeneous, creating substantial barriers to interoperability and data reuse, and ultimately limiting the translation of research into sustainable agricultural innovation. To address this gap, we developed an ontology-based data access and integration (OBDI) framework tha

A TinyMLOps Pipeline for Coarse-Grained Plant Disease Classification in Precision Agriculture.

Identifying plant health conditions is an emerging precision-agriculture and food-security challenge, intensified by deploying deep-learning models on memory- and power-constrained edge devices. We present a TinyMLOps pipeline spanning model design, optimization, quantization, and deployment across diverse edge devices, evaluated under controlled laboratory conditions. Using a dataset derived from the PlantVillage benchmark, 39 fine-grained classes are aggregated into three superclasses: healthy leaf, unhealthy leaf, and no leaves. The resulting system therefore performs plant health-status cl

Global-Scale Patterns of Host Transitions Suggest Contrasting Levels of Specialization Within Rhizoctonia solani.

The ability of plant pathogens to infect multiple host species has substantial adverse effects on food security and ecosystem health. Rhizoctonia solani is a globally distributed, soil-borne fungal pathogen capable of infecting a wide variety of economically important crops. Its broad distribution across geographic regions and host taxa is accompanied by high genetic diversity. Historically, the R. solani species complex has been classified into 14 anastomosis groups (AGs) based primarily on hyphal anastomosis compatibility. Despite being widely perceived as a generalist, R. solani's host rang…

Risk governance of transgenic plants: bridging science, policy, and public trust.

Transgenic plants and genome editing technologies are revolutionizing agriculture through sustainable approaches to food security, pest management, and adaptation to climate change; but their widespread use is hampered by regulatory systems that are fragmented, ethics considerations, and an ongoing lack of trust from the general public. In contrast to other literature that evaluates regulation processes and public acceptance separately, our review paper introduces a new, holistic approach that includes both technical risk assessment from a scientific perspective, and Codex Alimentarius and OEC…

Estimating changes in center pivot irrigation in the High Plains Aquifer using a hybrid GIS-remote sensing deep learning approach, 2001 to 2023.

Since the introduction of center pivot irrigation (CPI) technologies in the 1950s, there has been a precipitous increase in irrigated cropland in the U.S. High Plains. While CPI has helped "drought proof" agriculture operations, thereby enhancing food security and permitting the expansion of agriculture operations in this semi-arid, drought-prone region, it has also contributed to groundwater depletion, which now threatens the very livelihoods of those who have become dependent on these technologies. Further compounding the issue, groundwater is a shared resource often underlying numerous juri…

GBR-DETR: A Real-Time Tomato Leaf Disease Detection Model for Edge Device Deployment.

Tomato leaf diseases pose significant threats to crop yield and food security. However, in real-world cultivation environments, factors such as fluctuating illumination, varying leaf occlusion, and ambiguous lesion morphology often compromise detection accuracy. This paper presents the Gradient-aware Bidirectional Retentive Detection Transformer (GBR-DETR), a model designed for high-precision, real-time disease detection. This model is composed of two network structures and a retentive feature aggregation module: (1) a Multi-scale Gradient-Aware Transfer Network (MGAT-Net) is designed to encod…

Real-time detection of plant leaf diseases based on improved YOLOv13-LM in complex field environments.

Plant leaf diseases are a major factor leading to crop yield reduction, seriously threatening food security and sustainable agricultural development. Timely and accurate detection is crucial for scientific prevention and control. Traditional manual detection is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and highly subjective. Existing deep learning detection models still have significant shortcomings in complex field scenarios, struggling to balance detection accuracy, real-time performance, and stability. They are easily affected by background interference, differences in lesion scale, and sample imbal…
