OBJECTIVES: The first tissue engineered decellularized porcine heart valve, Synergraft (Cryolife Inc., USA) was introduced in Europe as an alternative to conventional biological valves. This is the first report of the rapid failure of these new grafts in a small series.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 2001, 2 model 500 and 2 model 700 Synergraft valves were implanted in four male children (age 2.5-11 years) in the right ventricular outflow tract as a root. Two patients had a Ross operation and two had a homograft replacement.

Pacemaker component allergy is a relatively uncommon cause of erythema and pain at the site of an implanted pacemaker. Allergies to multiple pacemaker components have been well described. We present a case in which 2 component allergies were documented on separate occasions. Although attempts were made to protect the patient by "coating" the pacemaker, the protective coating was incomplete and the patient again had a clinical reaction. Severe bone erosion within the temporomandibular joint reconstructed with polytetrafluoroethylene implants is a well-recognized phenomenon. Although erosion into the middle cranial fossa has been reported, we know of no report of dural disruption with cerebrospinal fluid leakage. We report a case of cerebrospinal fluid leak noted at the time of PTFE implant removal and its subsequent management. Perforation of the contralateral glenoid fossa and its reconstruction is also reported.

This histopathological study on cats has shown that electrodes may be implanted into the cochlea through the round window or an opening drilled over the middle and apical turns without loss of the spiral ganglion cells or auditory nerve fibres. It has also shown that infection, leading to a labyrinthitis, was more likely to occur when an opening was drilled in the cochlea, and this could lead to a marked destruction of the cochlear structures, and loss of the spiral ganglion cells.

INTRODUCTION:: Failures due to adverse reaction to metal debris (ARMD) have become an area of common focus among surgeons performing hip replacements.
