Towards laryngeal cancer diagnosis using Dandelion Optimizer Algorithm with ensemble learning on biomedical throat region images.

Laryngeal cancer exhibits a notable global health burden, with later-stage detection contributing to a low mortality rate. Laryngeal cancer diagnosis on throat region images is a pivotal application of computer vision (CV) and medical image diagnoses in the medical sector. It includes detecting and analysing abnormal or cancerous tissue from the larynx, an integral part of the vocal and respiratory systems. The computer-aided system makes use of artificial intelligence (AI) through deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) models, including convolution neural networks (CNN), for automated d

Deep Convolutional Neural Network-Based Automatic Classification of Neonatal Hip Ultrasound Images: A Novel Data Augmentation Approach with Speckle Noise Reduction.

Neonatal hip ultrasound imaging has been widely used for a few decades in the diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Graf's method of hip ultrasonography is still the most reproducible because of its classification system; yet, the reproducibility is questionable as a result of the high dependency on the skills of the sonographer and the evaluator. A computer-aided diagnosis system may help evaluators increase their precision in the diagnosis of DDH using Graf's method. This study describes a fully automatic computer-aided diagnosis system for the classification of hip ultrasou

Structural analysis of physical gel networks using graph neural networks.

We employ graph neural networks (GNN) to analyse and classify physical gel networks obtained from Brownian dynamics simulations of particles with competing attractive and repulsive interactions. Conventionally such gels are characterized by their position in a state diagram spanned by the packing fraction and the strength of the attraction. Gel networks at different regions of such a state diagram are qualitatively different although structural differences are subtile while dynamical properties are more pronounced. However, using graph classification the GNN is capable of positioning complete

A Lightweight Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning Framework for Heterogeneity-Resilient Skin Cancer Diagnosis.

Machine Learning (ML) demonstrates dermatologist level accuracy in skin cancer diagnosis, yet its practical adoption is constrained by data silos and privacy issues. While Federated Learning (FL) addresses these limitations, it remains susceptible to data heterogeneity and gradient leakage attacks. To overcome these challenges, we introduce a privacy-preserving FL framework tailored for encrypted dermoscopic image analysis. Our proposed framework integrates a Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE)-enabled variant of Stochastic Controlled Averaging (SCA), enhancing model convergence with Non-IID da

MGFNet: A Multi-Granularity Fusion Network with Coupling-Guided Sparse Routing for Hybrid EEG-fNIRS Decoding.

Hybrid brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have attracted growing research attention because they combine the millisecond-level temporal resolution of electroencephalography (EEG) with the spatially informative hemodynamic responses of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). However, most existing deep fusion methods rely on static late-fusion strategies, which tend to underexploit latent cross-modal dependencies and are vulnerable to modality-specific signal degradation. To address these limitations, we propose MGFNet, a multi-granularity fusion network for hybrid BCI decoding. MGFNet con

Classification and Segmentation of Medical Images Using Cross-Representation Attention Fusion and Fuzzy Image Enhancement.

This paper proposes a Cross-Representation Attention-Based Neural Network with fuzzy image enhancement for joint classification and segmentation of chest X-ray and kidney images. First, each input image is transformed into three complementary representations using histogram spread, fuzzy entropy, and fuzzy standard deviation-based enhancement. These representations emphasize different intensity distributions, informative regions, and local structural variations. A Cross-Representation Attention Fusion module then models multidirectional relationships among the enhanced representations and adap

Comparison of 2D, 2.5D, and 3D segmentation networks for mandibular canals in CBCT images: a study on public and external datasets.

The purpose of this study was to compare the performances of 2D, 2.5D, and 3D CNN-based segmentation networks, along with a 3D vision transformer-based segmentation network, for segmenting mandibular canals (MCs) on the public and external CBCT datasets under the same GPU memory capacity. We also performed ablation studies for an image-cropping (IC) technique and segmentation loss functions. 3D-UNet showed the highest segmentation performance for the MC than those of 2D and 2.5D segmentation networks on public test datasets, achieving 0.569 ± 0.107, 0.719 ± 0.092, 0.664 ± 0.131, and 0.812 ± 0.

Histopathological cancer images classification with Deng entropy.

Histopathological imaging is of paramount importance for the initial detection, diagnosis, and classification of tumors. Recurrent neural networks and convolutional neural networks have led to substantial advancements in digital pathology, thereby enhancing classification accuracy. Tsallis and Shannon entropies were employed to optimize cancer classification. However, certain constraints remain to be addressed, including the need to mitigate noise and uncertainty. This study aimed to classify histopathological images of cancer using Deng entropy and long short-term memory (LSTM) as a novel app

Improved brain metastases segmentation using generative adversarial network and conditional random field optimization mask R-CNN.

BACKGROUND: In radiotherapy, the delineation of the gross tumor volume (GTV) in brain metastases using computed tomography (CT) simulation localization is very important. However, despite the criticality of this process, a pronounced gap exists in the availability of tools tailored for the automatic segmentation of the GTV based on CT simulation localization images. PURPOSE: This study aims to fill this gap by devising an effective tool specifically for the automatic segmentation of the GTV using CT simulation localization images. METHODS: A dual-network generative adversarial network (GAN)

An end-to-end multi-scale airway segmentation framework based on pulmonary CT image.

Objective. Automatic and accurate airway segmentation is necessary for lung disease diagnosis. The complex tree-like structures leads to gaps in the different generations of the airway tree, and thus airway segmentation is also considered to be a multi-scale problem. In recent years, convolutional neural networks have facilitated the development of medical image segmentation. In particular, 2D CNNs and 3D CNNs can extract different scale features. Hence, we propose a two-stage and 2D + 3D framework for multi-scale airway tree segmentation.Approach. In stage 1, we use a 2D full airway SegNet(2D

Breast ultrasound image segmentation: A coarse-to-fine fusion convolutional neural network.

PURPOSE: Breast ultrasound (BUS) image segmentation plays a crucial role in computer-aided diagnosis systems for BUS examination, which are useful for improved accuracy of breast cancer diagnosis. However, such performance remains a challenging task owing to the poor image quality and large variations in the sizes, shapes, and locations of breast lesions. In this paper, we propose a new convolutional neural network with coarse-to-fine feature fusion to address the aforementioned challenges. METHODS: The proposed fusion network consists of an encoder path, a decoder path, and a core fusion str

Automatic lesion segmentation and classification of hepatic echinococcosis using a multiscale-feature convolutional neural network.

Hepatic echinococcosis (HE) is a life-threatening liver disease caused by parasites that requires a precise diagnosis and proper treatments. To assess HE lesions accurately, we propose a novel automatic HE lesion segmentation and classification network that contains lesion region positioning (LRP) and lesion region segmenting (LRS) modules. First, we used the LRP module to obtain the probability map of the lesion distribution and the position of the lesion. Then, based on the result of the LRP module, we used the LRS module to precisely segment the HE lesions within the high-probability region

Neural Oscillation Disorder in the Hippocampal CA1 Region of Different Alzheimer's Disease Mice.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a well-known neurodegenerative disease that gradually induces neural network dysfunction and progressive memory deficits. Neural network activity is represented by rhythmic oscillations that influence local field potentials (LFPs). However, changes in hippocampal neural rhythmic oscillations in the early stage of AD remain largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated neural rhythmic oscillations in 3-month-old APP/PS1 and 5x- FAD mice to assess early neural connectivity in AD. METHODS: LFPs were recorded from the hippocampal CA1 region with i

State estimator and convolutional neural networks-based fault localization approach for modern grids.

Direct current distribution networks get more attention due to the high penetration of renewable energy-based distributed generation. However, these networks face protection challenges like detecting, classifying, and localizing faults. This manuscript proposes a two-stage approach for identifying and isolating faults within these critical networks. The first stage uses a cubature Kalman filter to estimate the state of the measured current and voltage signals at the faulty bus. These estimated signals represent various fault scenarios and serve as convolutional neural network training data. Th

Artificial Intelligence-Based Classification of CT Images Using a Hybrid SpinalZFNet.

The kidney is an abdominal organ in the human body that supports filtering excess water and waste from the blood. Kidney diseases generally occur due to changes in certain supplements, medical conditions, obesity, and diet, which causes kidney function and ultimately leads to complications such as chronic kidney disease, kidney failure, and other renal disorders. Combining patient metadata with computed tomography (CT) images is essential to accurately and timely diagnosing such complications. Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have transformed medical fields by providing high accuracy in complex tas

NMDA Receptor Alterations After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Induce Deficits in Memory Acquisition and Recall.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) presents a significant health concern with potential persisting deficits that can last decades. Although a growing body of literature improves our understanding of the brain network response and corresponding underlying cellular alterations after injury, the effects of cellular disruptions on local circuitry after mTBI are poorly understood. Our group recently reported how mTBI in neuronal networks affects the functional wiring of neural circuits and how neuronal inactivation influences the synchrony of coupled microcircuits. Here, we utilized a computational

Distributed Subnetworks of Depression Defined by Direct Intracranial Neurophysiology.

Major depressive disorder is a common and disabling disorder with high rates of treatment resistance. Evidence suggests it is characterized by distributed network dysfunction that may be variable across patients, challenging the identification of quantitative biological substrates. We carried out this study to determine whether application of a novel computational approach to a large sample of high spatiotemporal resolution direct neural recordings in humans could unlock the functional organization and coordinated activity patterns of depression networks. This group level analysis of depressio

PDDUNet: A primal-dual deep unrolling network for CT metal artifact reduction.

In computed tomography (CT) imaging, severe artifacts caused by metallic implants within patients degrade image quality and compromise clinical diagnostic accuracy. Currently, deep unrolling-based methods have demonstrated strong capability in metal artifact reduction (MAR). However, these methods primarily focus only on the unfoldment of data fidelity term, limiting their effectiveness. To overcome this issue, both the data fidelity term and the regularization term were unrolled to construct a Primal-Dual Deep Unrolling Network (PDDUNet) for MAR. First, a unified optimization model formulated
