Prevalence of Accommodative Insufficiency in Children With Normal Accommodative-Convergence/Accommodation Ratio and Its Association With Refractive Error: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: With the increasing use of digital devices among the pediatric population, asthenopia has become increasingly common. While refractive errors are the most prevalent cause, they can sometimes be linked to undiagnosed or underdiagnosed binocular vision disorders, such as accommodative insufficiency (AI). In many cases, simple refractive correction alone does not alleviate asthenopia. This study aims to determine the prevalence of AI in children with a normal accommodative-convergence/accommodation (AC/A) ratio and to investigate the correlation between accommodative amplitude and refr

The neuronal RNA-binding protein Nova-2 is implicated as the autoantigen targeted in POMA patients with dementia.

Paraneoplastic opsoclonus myoclonus ataxia (POMA) is a neurologic disorder thought to be mediated by an autoimmune attack against onconeural disease antigens that are expressed by gynecologic or lung tumors and by neurons. One POMA disease antigen, termed Nova-1, has been identified as a neuron-specific KH-type RNA-binding protein. Nova-1 expression is restricted to specific regions of the central nervous system, primarily the hindbrain and ventral spinal cord, which correlate with the predominantly motor symptoms in POMA. However, POMA antisera recognize antigens that are widely expressed in

Orbital floor reconstruction with resorbable polydioxanone implants.

Many different materials are proposed for reconstruction of traumatic orbital floor defects. Donor-site morbidity of autologous transplants and infections or extrusions of nonresorbable implants lead to a widespread use of resorbable, alloplastic materials such as polydioxanone (PDS). The goal of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of orbital floor fracture-related problems after surgical treatment using PDS. Ophthalmologic and clinical examinations were performed at 194 patients before orbital floor reconstruction, 14 days and 6 months after surgery (approximate defect sizes: <1 cm², n=

Roles of Collagen XXV and Its Putative Receptors PTPσ/δ in Intramuscular Motor Innervation and Congenital Cranial Dysinnervation Disorder.

Intramuscular motor innervation is an essential process in neuromuscular development. Recently, mutations in COL25A1, encoding CLAC-P/collagen XXV, have been linked to the development of a congenital cranial dysinnervation disorder (CCDD). Yet the molecular mechanisms of intramuscular innervation and the etiology of CCDD related to COL25A1 have remained elusive. Here, we report that muscle-derived collagen XXV is indispensable for intramuscular innervation. In developing skeletal muscles, Col25a1 expression is tightly regulated by muscle excitation. In vitro and cell-based assays reveal a dire

Functional outcome after non-surgical management of orbital fractures--the bias of decision-making according to size of defect: critical review of 48 patients.

The treatment of mild and moderate fractures of the orbital wall is controversial. Apart from clinical signs, the size of the defect is often used to aid the decision about treatment. We hypothesised that variables would be present that had an impact on the position and motility of the globe but were independent of the size of the defect, and prevented a balanced judgement of the outcome of conservative treatment. Between January 2000 and December 2007, 48 of 127 patients were included in this retrospective study to analyse the functional outcome of orbital fractures managed without operation.

Amyloid clearance defect in ApoE4 astrocytes is reversed by epigenetic correction of endosomal pH.

Endosomes have emerged as a central hub and pathogenic driver of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The earliest brain cytopathology in neurodegeneration, occurring decades before amyloid plaques and cognitive decline, is an expansion in the size and number of endosomal compartments. The strongest genetic risk factor for sporadic AD is the ε4 allele of Apolipoprotein E (ApoE4). Previous studies have shown that ApoE4 potentiates presymptomatic endosomal dysfunction and defective endocytic clearance of amyloid beta (Aβ), although how these two pathways are linked at a cellular and mechanistic level has b

Calcium phosphate cement in orbital reconstructions.

Treatment of facial trauma sequelae is a complex and challenging process. There is still controversy over suitable materials for orbital wall reconstruction. This study evaluated calcium phosphate cement (CPC) implants manufactured by rapid prototyping in the repair of orbital wall defects secondary to trauma. Computed tomographic scans of 5 patients were used for surgery planning and production of CPC implants. Implants were used to restore orbital wall anatomy, ocular alignment, and facial contour. Benefits resulting from the use of implants, such as a reduced operating time, patient respons
