How does biofeedback reduce clinical symptoms and do memories and beliefs have biological consequences? Toward a model of mind-body healing.

Changes in the magnitude and direction of physiological measures (EMG, EEG, temperature, etc.) are not strongly related to the reduction of clinical symptoms in biofeedback therapy. Previously, nonspecified perceptual, cognitive, and emotional factors related to threat perception (Wickramasekera, 1979, 1988, 1998) may account for the bulk of the variance in the reduction of clinical symptoms. The mean magnitude of these previously nonspecified or placebo factors is closer to 70% when both the therapist and patient believe in the efficacy of the therapy. This powerful placebo effect is hypothes

Bradycardia induced by intravascular versus direct stimulation of the vagus nerve.

BACKGROUND: Electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system results in slowing of the heart. We sought to determine whether cardiac vagal efferent axons can be stimulated adequately to induce bradycardia without disturbing the integrity of the thorax. METHODS: Cardiodepressor effects elicited by direct stimulation of a vagus nerve in anesthetized dogs and pigs were compared with those generated when the same nerve was stimulated indirectly through bipolar electrodes placed in the adjacent superior vena cava. RESULTS: The heart rate of dogs decreased by about 80% when electrical …

Effect of neurovestibular stimulation on autonomic regulation.

Conditions associated with nausea and vomiting, such as motion sickness or side effects of medications, are commonly associated with a clinical picture consistent with parasympathetic activation and sympathetic withdrawal. It can be postulated, therefore, that vestibular stimulation contributes to sympathetic withdrawal. To test this hypothesis five normal volunteers, 24-33 years old, were studied during caloric vestibular stimulation while monitoring muscle sympathetic nerve activity directly through a needle electrode placed in a peroneal nerve. The ear was irrigated with water at a flow rat

Fractal nature of short-term systolic BP and HR variability during lower body negative pressure.

We have shown previously that the heart rate variability (HRV) signal is fractal in nature with a high degree of complexity, as given by the calculated fractal dimension (DF). We have also reported that loss of complexity, as indicated by a reduction in DF of HRV, is associated with orthostatic hypotension and impending syncope. To extend this investigation of cardiovascular responses, we have investigated the signal characteristics of short-term systolic blood pressure variability (BPV) coincident with measurements of HRV during orthostatic stress. Eight healthy men completed a test protocol

Influence of acute alpha 1-adrenergic antagonism on heart rate variability in patients with old myocardial infarction.

Decreased heart rate (HR) variation is a predictor of cardiac and arrhythmic death after myocardial infarction (MI). The present study examined the influence of alpha-adrenergic system on HR variation (HRV). A novel alpha 1-adrenergic antagonist, abanoquil (UK 52,046) was administered acutely to 27 patients with old MI in random placebo-controlled cross-over design. Abanoquil decreased mean sinus interval for 24 h from 884 +/- 119 (mean +/- SD) to 830 +/- 116 ms (p = 0.0001). The total spectral (0.01-1.0 Hz) amplitude in HRV decreased from 44.6 +/- 14.8 to 40.6 +/- 14.8 ms (p = 0.018). Corresp

A widely distributed antigen developmentally regulated in the nervous system.

We have identified a glycoprotein (BEN) of 95-100 x 10(3) Mr using a monoclonal antibody. This protein is transiently expressed at the cell surface of the peripherally projecting neurons, i.e. motoneurons of the spinal cord and cranial nuclei, sensory neurons of the dorsal root and cranial sensory ganglia and sympathetic, parasympathetic and enteric neurons. In vitro cultures of dorsal root and sympathetic ganglia have shown that BEN is expressed on neurons but not on glial cells. On motor and sensory neurons, BEN first appears at the level of the cell body just after withdrawal from the cell

Genetic manipulation of autonomic nerve fiber innervation and activity and its effect on breast cancer progression.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The effects of autonomic innervation of tumors on tumor growth remain unclear. Here we developed a series of genetic techniques to manipulate autonomic innervation in a tumor- and fiber-type-specific manner in mice with human breast cancer xenografts and in rats with chemically induced breast tumors. Breast cancer growth and progression were accelerated following stimulation of sympathetic nerves in tumors, but were reduced following stimulation of parasympathetic nerves. Tumor-specific sympathetic denervation suppressed tumor growth and downregulated the expression of immune checkpoint molecu

Sleep: A Window Into Autonomic Control in Children Born Preterm and Growth Restricted.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Preterm birth and fetal growth restriction (FGR) are both associated with risk of hypertension in adulthood. Mechanisms leading to this pathology are unclear. In children aged 5-12 years, who were born preterm and FGR, we used sleep as a tool to assess autonomic control with assessment of cardiovascular structure and function. METHODS: Eighteen children born preterm and FGR, 15 children born preterm with appropriate birth weights for gestational age (AGA), and 20 AGA term-born children were studied. Children underwent overnight polysomnography with the addition of continuous

Heart rate variability in depressed elderly.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examines a measure of cardiac autonomic function, the heart rate variability (HRV), in a group of depressed elderly. Cardiac autonomic abnormalities have been implicated as a potential mediator of cardiovascular events and sudden death in depression. Because aging is associated with decreased cardiac vagal activity, it is possible that autonomic abnormalities are even more pronounced in the older depressed patients. DESIGN: Cross-sectional comparison between those with or without depression. The groups were compared using the Wilcoxon matched-pair sign-rank test.

[Functional participation of the T10-L2 sympathetic component in inferior urinary tract dynamics].

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the effect of injury of the sympathetic element of vesico-urethral innervation on lower urinary tract. METHODS: We studied clinical, urodynamic, and radiological features in a sample of 261 patients studied because of neurogenic vesico-urethral dysfunction. Three types of inferior sympathetic lesions were established based on urodynamic and radiologic behaviors. We studied relationships between this kind of lesions and clinical, urodynamic, and radiological features, as well as the association of lower sympathetic lesions with the rest of vesicourethral innervation elem

Stress and Salivary Glands.

Salivary glands produce a bicarbonate-rich fluid containing digestive and protective proteins and other components to be delivered into the gastrointestinal tract. Its function is under strict control of the autonomic nervous system. Salivary electrolyte and fluid secretion are primarily controlled by parasympathetic activity, while protein secretion is primaily triggered by sympathetic stimulation. Stress activates the hypothalamic - pituitary - adrenal axis. The peripheral limb of this axis is the efferent sympathetic/adrenomedullary system. Stress reaction, even if it is sustained for long,

Autonomic control of cardiac rhythm at the onset of muscle metaboreflex activation following exercise in healthy young and old adults.

Sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system (SNS, PNS) control of cardiac rhythm during muscle metaboreflex activation (MMA) are important components of the physiological response to exercise but poorly understood. Therefore, SNS and PNS control of cardiac rhythm at the onset of MMA following exercise was examined in healthy young and old adults. Fourteen young (26 ± 2 years) and 10 old (62 ± 3 years) healthy adults performed 90-s, one-legged, isometric, calf exercise at 70% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and underwent a 0% MVC control trial, with unilateral circulatory occlusion begin…

Heart rate variability as a biomarker of autonomic (re)activity and fatigue in multiple sclerosis.

Fatigue is a debilitating symptom in multiple sclerosis (MS) associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction. Heart rate variability (HRV) provides a non-invasive measure of ANS function; yet the relative sensitivity of linear and nonlinear HRV parameters in capturing specific ANS (dys)function remains unclear. This study investigated the factorial structure of HRV parameters, their response to biopsychological interventions, and their relationship with MS-related fatigue. Data from two clinical trials (N = 78) were pooled. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was applied to time-domai

Heart Rate Variability Applications in Medical Specialties: A Narrative Review.

HRV is clinically considered to be a surrogate measure of the asymmetrical interplay of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. While HRV has become an increasingly measured variable through commercially-available wearable devices, HRV is not routinely monitored or utilized in healthcare settings at this time. The purpose of this narrative review is to discuss and evaluate the current research and potential future applications of HRV in several medical specialties, including critical care, cardiology, pulmonology, nephrology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, infectious disease, hem…

Peculiarities of the Acetylcholine Action on the Contractile Function of Cardiomyocytes from the Left and Right Atria in Rats.

Acetylcholine (ACh) is the neurotransmitter of the parasympathetic nervous system that modulates cardiac function, and its high concentrations may induce atrial fibrillation. We compared the ACh action on the mechanical function of single cardiomyocytes from the left atria (LA) and the right atria (RA). We exposed single rat LA and RA cardiomyocytes to 1, 10, and 100 µM ACh for 10-15 min and measured the parameters of sarcomere shortening-relengthening and cytosolic calcium ([Ca2+]i) transients during cell contractions. We also studied the effects of ACh on cardiac myosin function using an in …

Cardioneuroablation in the treatment of neurally mediated reflex syncope: a review of the current literature.

OBJECTIVE: An imbalance between parasympathetic and sympathetic tone is a main cause of neurally mediated reflex syncope (NMRS). These patients may be very symptomatic and the condition may require cardiac pacemaker implantation. Cardioneuroablation (CNA) is a relatively novel technique based on radiofrequency ablation of vagal ganglia that can be used in treatment of NMRS. The aim of this analysis was to compare potential role of CNA in patients with NMRS. METHODS: In accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Statement, literature search was condu

Neurotoxic impact of mercury on the central nervous system evaluated by neuropsychological tests and on the autonomic nervous system evaluated by dynamic pupillometry.

Mercury vapor is highly toxic to the human body. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence of neuropsychological dysfunction in former workers of fluorescent lamps factories that were exposed to mercury vapor (years after cessation of exposure), diagnosed with chronic mercurialism, and to investigate the effects of such exposure on the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) using the non-invasive method of dynamic pupillometry. The exposed group and a control group matched by age and educational level were evaluated by the Beck Depression Inventory and with the computerized neuropsychologi

Acetylcholine induces fibrogenic effects via M2/M3 acetylcholine receptors in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and in primary human hepatic stellate cells.

BACKGROUND: The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), via neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh), modulates fibrogenesis in animal models. However, the role of ACh in human hepatic fibrogenesis is unclear. AIMS: We aimed to determine the fibrogenic responses of human hepatic stellate cells (hHSC) to ACh and the relevance of the PNS in hepatic fibrosis in patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). METHODS: Primary hHSC were analyzed for synthesis of endogenous ACh and acetylcholinesterase and gene expression of choline acetyltransferase and muscarinic ACh receptors (mAChR). Cell prolif…
