Age-Dependent Upper Limb Myoelectric Control Capability in Typically Developing Children.

Research in EMG-based control of prostheses has mainly utilized adult subjects who have fully developed neuromuscular control. Little is known about children's ability to generate consistent EMG signals necessary to control artificial limbs with multiple degrees of freedom. As a first step to address this gap, experiments were designed to validate and benchmark two experimental protocols that quantify the ability to coordinate forearm muscle contractions in typically developing children. Non-disabled, healthy adults and children participated in our experiments that aimed to measure an individu

Data-driven learning to identify biomarkers in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder (BD) is one of the primary causes of disability globally and can be easily misdiagnosed as schizophrenia or major depression due to their similar symptoms. Hence, it is of great significance to explore the pathogenesis of BD. Statistical analysis is currently the most common method for exploring the neuropathological mechanisms of psychiatric disorders. However, this method only considers the relationship between groups and does not reflect the individual-level diagnosis. Therefore, we developed machine learning algorithms to measure pathological brai

Feature selection from magnetic resonance imaging data in ALS: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: With the advances in neuroimaging in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), it has been speculated that multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is capable to contribute to early diagnosis. Machine learning (ML) can be regarded as the missing piece that allows for the useful integration of multiparametric MRI data into a diagnostic classifier. The major challenges in developing ML classifiers for ALS are limited data quantity and a suboptimal sample to feature ratio which can be addressed by sound feature selection. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review to collect MRI bi

Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography of maternal and fetal blood flows in pregnant bitches.

We evaluated the potential usefulness of CEUS to assess fetal-maternal circulation during pregnancy in dogs. Nine bitches were examined at 23, 30, and 45 days of gestation using an ultrasound machine (LOGIQ E9) and SonoVue® contrast media as echo-signal enhancer. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of contrast enhancement patterns of uterine artery and utero/placental vessels were performed on recorded images. Independently of the gestational periods, the qualitative evaluation showed the initial wash-in phase from the first appearance of the uterine artery to the rapid distribution in emb

Feature Analysis and Automatic Identification of Leukemic Lineage Blast Cells and Reactive Lymphoid Cells from Peripheral Blood Cell Images.

BACKGROUND: Automated peripheral blood (PB) image analyzers usually underestimate the total number of blast cells, mixing them up with reactive or normal lymphocytes. Therefore, they are not able to discriminate between myeloid or lymphoid blast cell lineages. The objective of the proposed work is to achieve automatic discrimination of reactive lymphoid cells (RLC), lymphoid and myeloid blast cells and to obtain their morphologic patterns through feature analysis. METHODS: In the training stage, a set of 696 blood cell images was selected in 32 patients (myeloid acute leukemia, lymphoid precu

CSAX: Characterizing Systematic Anomalies in eXpression Data.

Methods for translating gene expression signatures into clinically relevant information have typically relied upon having many samples from patients with similar molecular phenotypes. Here, we address the question of what can be done when it is relatively easy to obtain healthy patient samples, but when abnormalities corresponding to disease states may be rare and one-of-a-kind. The associated computational challenge, anomaly detection, is a well-studied machine-learning problem. However, due to the dimensionality and variability of expression data, existing methods based on feature space anal

Diabetic retinopathy risk prediction for fundus examination using sparse learning: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Blindness due to diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the major disability in diabetic patients. Although early management has shown to prevent vision loss, diabetic patients have a low rate of routine ophthalmologic examination. Hence, we developed and validated sparse learning models with the aim of identifying the risk of DR in diabetic patients. METHODS: Health records from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES) V-1 were used. The prediction models for DR were constructed using data from 327 diabetic patients, and were validated internally on 163 patient

Computer-aided detection of cancer in automated 3-D breast ultrasound.

Automated 3-D breast ultrasound (ABUS) has gained a lot of interest and may become widely used in screening of dense breasts, where sensitivity of mammography is poor. However, reading ABUS images is time consuming, and subtle abnormalities may be missed. Therefore, we are developing a computer aided detection (CAD) system to help reduce reading time and prevent errors. In the multi-stage system we propose, segmentations of the breast, the nipple and the chestwall are performed, providing landmarks for the detection algorithm. Subsequently, voxel features characterizing coronal spiculation pat

Occupation and squamous cell cancers of the pharynx and sinonasal cavity.

Lifetime job histories from a population-based case-control study of squamous cell carcinomas of the oro- and hypopharynx (OHPC), nasopharynx (NPC), and sinonasal cavity (SNC) were systematically examined to generate new hypotheses as well as to test previously noted associations between occupation and the cancers under study. The effects of both duration of employment in a particular job and the timing of the employment in relation to cancer diagnosis were investigated in a stratified analysis that controlled for cigarette smoking, alcohol intake, and other major risk factors. Overall, data o

Nonlinear association between stress hyperglycemia ratio and mortality in AHRF: validation through consensus clustering and supervised machine learning models.

PURPOSE: Acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF), a life-threatening condition in critically ill patients, is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Although the stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR) may reflect acute metabolic stress, its prognostic role in AHRF remains unclear. This study investigated the association between SHR and mortality risk in patients with AHRF. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 2514 patients with AHRF from the MIMIC-IV database. Restricted cubic spline analysis was used to assess the potential non-linear association between SHR and 28-day all-cause mortality. Kap

Identification of hub genes and their correlation with immune infiltration in coronary artery disease through bioinformatics and machine learning methods.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a multifactorial disease and its pathogenesis remains unclear. We aimed to explore the optimal feature genes (OFGs) for CAD and to investigate the function of immune cell infiltration of CAD. It will be helpful for better understanding of the pathogenesis and the development of genetic prediction of CAD. METHODS: Datasets related to CAD were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Cases from the datasets met diagnostic criteria including clinical symptoms, electrocardiographic (ECG) and angiographic evidence. We identified differe

Multi-comparative systems biology analysis reveals time-course biosignatures of in vivo bovine pathway responses to B.melitensis, S.enterica Typhimurium and M.avium paratuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: To decipher the complexity and improve the understanding of host-pathogen interactions, biologists must adopt new system level approaches in which the hierarchy of biological interactions and dynamics can be studied. This paper presents the application of systems biology for the cross-comparative analysis and interactome modeling of three different infectious agents, leading to the identification of novel, unique and common molecular host responses (biosignatures). METHODS: A computational systems biology method was utilized to create interactome models of the host responses to Br

Data-driven machine learning approach for water quality anomaly detection and NPS-FM non-compliance risk prediction: A study with five New Zealand rivers.

The National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management (NPS-FM) 2020 sets national water quality objectives for New Zealand's freshwater, but compliance is mostly assessed after the fact, and tools for anticipating which sites may be at greatest risk of future non-compliance remain limited. This study presents a machine learning pipeline that detects abnormal water quality events and quantifies NPS-FM non-compliance risk, applied to five South Island rivers of New Zealand spanning four land cover types. Anomaly detection combined Isolation Forest method with seasonal interquartile range thres

MoCap-Referenced Neck-Shoulder sEMG-IMU Decoding for Discrete Assistive Commands: A Pilot Study.

Hands-free command interfaces are essential for users who cannot reliably operate joysticks or upper-limb myoelectric control. Neck-shoulder surface electromyography (sEMG) is a promising alternative; however, performance is often reported using window-level validation which can overestimate accuracy due to overlap and trial leakage, and false-trigger behavior is not always quantified when an idle REST state is included. This pilot study presents a motion-capture (MoCap)-referenced decoding framework that uses four bilateral upper trapezius (UT) and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) sEMG channels with
