Surgical interventions for treating radial head fractures in adults.

BACKGROUND: Radial head fractures are the most common type of elbow fracture and can severely affect the function of the elbow. There is uncertainty and controversy about when surgery is indicated as well as what type of surgical intervention is best. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of surgical interventions for treating radial head fractures in adults. We aimed to compare surgical versus non-surgical treatment, and different methods of surgical intervention. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group Specialised Register (May 2012), the Cochrane Central R

Plasma exchange for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is an uncommon progressive or relapsing paralysing disease caused by inflammation of the peripheral nerves. If the hypothesis that it is due to autoimmunity is correct, removal of autoantibodies in the blood by plasma exchange should be beneficial. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of plasma exchange in CIDP. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group Specialized Register (14 May 2012), CENTRAL (2012, Issue 4), MEDLINE (January 1966 to May 2012), EMBASE (January 1980 to May 2012), CINAHL

Intervention effects for students with comorbid forms of learning disability: understanding the needs of nonresponders.

In this article, we considered evidence from our intervention research programs on whether students with learning disability (LD) in reading and mathematics (comorbid LD) respond differently to intervention, compared to students with reading LD alone (RD) or to students with mathematics LD alone (MD). The goal was to gain insight into whether comorbid disorder represents an LD subtype distinct from RD or from MD, which requires differentiated forms of intervention. Our analysis suggested that students with comorbid LD respond differently than those with MD, depending on the nature of mathemati

Ivermectin for onchocercal eye disease (river blindness).

BACKGROUND: It is believed that ivermectin (a microfilaricide) could prevent blindness due to onchocerciasis. However, when given to everyone in communities where onchocerciasis is common, the effects of ivermectin on lesions affecting the eye are uncertain and data on whether the drug prevents visual loss are unclear. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to assess the effectiveness of ivermectin in preventing visual impairment and visual field loss in onchocercal eye disease. The secondary aim was to assess the effects of ivermectin on lesions affecting the eye in onchocerciasis. SEARCH M

Minocycline for acne vulgaris: efficacy and safety.

BACKGROUND: Minocycline is an oral antibiotic used for acne vulgaris. Its use has lessened due to safety concerns (including potentially irreversible pigmentation), a relatively high cost, and no evidence of any greater benefit than other acne treatments. A modified-release version of minocycline is being promoted as having fewer side-effects. OBJECTIVES: To assess new evidence on the effects of minocycline for acne vulgaris. SEARCH METHODS: Searches were updated in the following databases to November 2011: the Cochrane Skin Group Specialised Register, CENTRAL in The Cochrane Library, MEDLIN

Can we increase the chance of sphincter saving surgery in rectal cancer with neoadjuvant treatments: lessons from a systematic review of recent randomized trials.

PURPOSE: A common hypothesis is that neo-adjuvant treatment in rectal cancer, is able to increase sphincter saving surgery. This review studies data relevant to this question. STUDY SELECTION: A total of 17 randomized trials were analysed. RESULTS: Since 1976, the rate of sphincter saving surgery increased from 20% to 75%. In none of the 17 trials it was possible to demonstrate a significant benefit of the neo-adjuvant regimens on the rate of sphincter saving surgery. There was a reduction in the risk of 5-year local recurrence partly due to these neo-adjuvant treatments. These neo-adjuvant

Pollen extract for chronic prostatitis-chronic pelvic pain syndrome.

Prostatitis syndrome is a frequent condition in men. It is not known in most patients if the prostate is the only organ involved. Therefore, the disease is characterized as chronic prostatitis-chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP-CPPS). Although many studies have been performed in patients with CP-CPPS, current trial evidence is conflicting and therapeutic options are controversial. Given the need for long-term treatment in CP-CPPS patients, phytotherapeutics, such as pollen extract, are an option due to few side effects. Preclinical studies on pollen extract have shown effects on smooth muscles o
