A 3-year study of spotted fever group rickettsial ecology in Inner Mongolia revealed that nearly half of the human population tested had antibodies to Rickettsia sibirica detected by complement fixation test. Infected persons, ticks and a high proportion of seropositive livestock and wild rodents were found in all five vegetation zones (desert, steppe, forest, forest-grassland and grassland).

Stool samples from 692 children hospitalized with symptoms of gastroenteritis, were examined for Cryptosporidium parvum. The oocysts were found in 17 (2.4%) children. There was no association with age, sex or location of household. However, relatively higher rate of oocyst exclusion was found among 2-month- to 3-year-old groups (50%) and among children from villages (43%). A period of high incidence of human Salmonella infections on the island of Guam saw the emergence of S. waycross as the most commonly isolated serotype as well as a concurrent decreasing proportion of isolates due to S. typhimurium. Predation of local rodents by an introduced snake is believed to account for the decreased prevalence of S. typhimurium infections, but reasons for the increased prevalence of S. waycross infections are unknown.

Larvae of Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides were infected with Kaysanur Forest disease (KFD) virus by feeding on viraemic rodents and reared into next generation larvae. Fed larvae, nymphs, unfed adults, fed adult males, and females after oviposition were found infected, while the larvae were found free from infection. Nymphs and adults transmitted the infection by bite to rodents and rabbits respectively. The virus was also passed through a second rodent-tick cycle. Adult ticks showed a titre of 3.1 to 4.5 dex mouse LD50/0.03 ml, and the virus was also detected 245 days after infection.

An epidemiological study in a mature oil palm estate in Peninsular Malaysia has demonstrated a low prevalence of R. tsutsugamushi infection in small mammals. The direct fluorescent antibody technique for assaying infections in chiggers proved more sensitive than mouse inoculation. Most infections in both chiggers and rodents were caused by the Karp strain.
