We saw in consultation a biopsy specimen from a 6-year old girl with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). The tumor arose in soft tissue of the neck, and diagnostic tissue was obtained by core needle biopsy. Histologically, the neoplasm was cellular without pattern. Immunohistochemical workup with a large panel of antibodies at another institution showed immunoreactivity for NB84 and neuron specific enolase (dim). Antibodies specific for CD3, CD20, and CD45/LCA were negative; CD30 or ALK were not assessed. Electron microscopy showed cytoplasmic struc

In conclusion, the attempt has been made to demonstrate that three major forms of new bone formation exist: reactive, neoplastic, and the newborn or relative skeletal sclerosis in congenital (developmental) disorders. A classification of skeletal disorders has been presented and four major groups have been selected from the nine categories in this classification. These are: congenital-developmental, metabolic and endocrine, benign neoplasms and malignant neoplasms. In all four categories a large group of entities which may present with new bone (sclerosis) are listed and are discussed in some,

OBJECT: The majority of sinonasal malignancies present with advanced disease, and cure rates are generally poor. Surgical extirpation remains the mainstay of treatment. In cases of sinonasal malignancy with orbital apex extension, gross-total tumor resection requires orbital exenteration and bony skull base resection around the orbital apex to provide sufficient margins. In this retrospective study, the authors describe their surgical strategy in and technique for orbital exenteration with orbital apex resection in patients at Tokyo Medical and Dental University who had sinonasal malignancy wi

Peripheral blood is increasingly used instead of bone marrow as a source of hemopoietic precursor cells for transplantation. The optimal technique still needs to be defined. Selection of CD34+ cells in transplant material may be of benefit in allogeneic and autologous peripheral blood precursor cell transplantation (PBPCT), since it allows elimination of unwanted CD34-negative cells, such as T-cells and contaminating tumor cells. We have evaluated the feasibility of CD34 selection in PB transplants and studied hemopoietic reconstitution after autologous transplantation of CD34 selected precurs

Forequarter amputation (interscapulothoracic amputation) includes surgical removal of an upper limb and the shoulder girdle, including the scapula and a portion of the clavicle. We aim to report about our recent experience of having to resort to this mutilating surgery and the clinicopathological variables in that context. The study was done at a cancer centre in Northeast India. It was an ambispective study design, where the patient cohort who underwent FQA was identified retrospectively from the operative register of major surgeries for the time period 1st June 2020 to 31st May 2022 (24 mont

UNLABELLED: A retrospective review of surgical interventions for pulmonary metastases found 44 surgical metastasectomies in patients 20 years old or younger.
OBJECTIVE: Indications for pulmonary metastasectomy are well established in adults, but are not so clear when we are dealing with a younger population.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of surgical interventions for pulmonary metastases (from December 1996 to October 2001) found 44 surgical metastasectomies in patients considered pediatric or young adults (20 years old or younger). Initial primary tumor, disease-free interval

BACKGROUND: A critical analysis of the contribution of flow cytometric immunophenotyping (FCI) to the evaluation of lymph nodes and extranodal tissues with suspected lymphoma by a large, retrospective approach has not been reported previously and represents the purpose of this study.
METHODS: A total of 278 lymph nodes and 95 extranodal tissue specimens submitted over a 2-year period with complete histologic, FCI, and immunohistochemical (IH) data formed the basis of the study.
RESULTS: The FCI data contributed significantly to or was consistent with the final tissue diagnosis in the majorit

BACKGROUND: Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare soft tissue sarcoma that has unusual ultrastructural and molecular features. However, unlike other soft tissue sarcomas, it does not have specific clinical symptoms or radiological features, which can make its diagnosis difficult. Nevertheless, extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma has a rare gene fusion (EWSR1-NR4A3) that is useful for making a differential diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old Japanese man presented with a soft tissue mass in his right thigh. A physical examination and radiography revealed a large soft tissue mas

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the oncologic and functional outcome of the cases treated with hemisacrectomy through a sagittal plane in the sacrum and simultaneous en bloc resection together with the ipsilateral sacroiliac joint without sacrificing the contralateral sacral nerves and summarize tumor resection techniques and reconstruction strategy.
METHODS: En bloc resection of a sacral malignancy with ipsilateral sacroiliac joint and preservation of the contralateral sacral nerves by sagittal hemisacrectomy had been performed in 15 patients. An intra-abdominal aortic balloon was used

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) of tendons and aponeuroses/malignant melanoma (MM) of soft parts is a rare tumor and in the majority of cases presents a characteristic reciprocal translocation t(12;22)(q13;q12) that results in fusion of the EWS and ATF1 genes. Although the melanocytic differentiation of CCS is indisputable, its precise lineage remains unclear. Typically, the slowly growing tumor affects the extremities of adolescents or young adults, especially around the ankle and foot. CCS is classically regarded as a deep soft tissue tumor associated with tendons or aponeuroses. This traditional v

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate preliminary results of a 3D-printed modular prosthesis for spinal reconstruction after multilevel thoracolumbar total en bloc spondylectomy (TES).
METHODS: Patients with thoracolumbar spinal tumors treated surgically between January 2016 and April 2019 were included in this retrospective study. A total of 17 male and 10 female patients with a mean age of 42 (range, 15-72) years comprised the sample. The pathological diagnoses included six chondrosarcomas (one of them was mesenchymal chondrosarcoma), six giant cell tumors, three malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors,

BACKGROUND: Preservation of limb function after resection of malignant bone tumors in skeletally immature children is challenging. Resection of bone sarcomas and reconstruction with an allograft in patients younger than 10 years old is one reconstructive alternative. However, long-term studies analyzing late complications and limb length discrepancy at skeletal maturity are scarce; this information would be important, because growth potential is altered in these patients owing to the loss of one physis during tumor resection.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: At a minimum followup of 10 years after reconst

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In orthopedic oncology, computer-assisted surgery (CAS) can be considered an alternative to fluoroscopy and direct measurement for orientation, planning, and margin control. However, only small case series reporting specific applications have been published. We therefore describe possible applications of CAS and report preliminary results in 130 procedures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all oncological CAS procedures in a single institution from November 2006 to March 2013. Mean follow-up time was 32 months. We categorized and analy

PAX2 plays an important role in kidney development; although small studies have demonstrated PAX2 expression in Wilms tumors (WT), comprehensive studies on formalin-fixed tissue are lacking. Thus, we systematically evaluated PAX2 immunohistochemical staining in a retrospective study of pediatric WT, as compared with other pediatric tumors. We stained formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections from 39 WT, 6 nephrogenic rests, 8 non-Wilms renal tumors, and 43 nonrenal pediatric small round cell tumors with 2 different PAX2 polyclonal antibodies. PAX2 demonstrated strong, diffuse staining of epit
