Noninvasive Assessment of the Risk Features of Hemorrhage in Moyamoya Disease Using 7T MRI.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: While digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is traditionally used for moyamoya disease (MMD) assessment, its invasiveness and limitations necessitate alternative methods. The higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio of 7T MRI improve the clarity of the image and retains the details of the structures. We aimed to assess the performance of 7T MRI in identifying hemorrhagic risk features of MMD compared with 3T MRI and DSA. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited patients with MMD who underwent both 7T and 3T MRI scans within a 24-hour windo

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) as an intervention to improve empathic abilities and reduce violent behavior in forensic offenders: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies show that changes in one of the brain areas related to empathic abilities (i.e. the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC)) plays an important role in violent behavior in abusers of alcohol and cocaine. According to the models of James Blair, empathy is a potential inhibitor of violent behavior. Individuals with less empathic abilities may be less susceptible and motivated to inhibit violent behavior, which causes a higher risk of violence. Recent neuroscientific research shows that modulating (stimulation or inhibition) certain brain areas could be a promising new i

Voltage-dependent ionic currents in dissociated paratracheal ganglion cells of the rat.

1. Conventional whole-cell voltage-clamp technique was used to study the electrophysiological and pharmacological properties of voltage-dependent Na+, K+ and Ca2+ channels in parasympathetic neurones enzymatically dissociated from the paratracheal ganglia of rat trachea. The voltage-dependent Na+, K+ and Ca2+ currents (INa, IK and ICa) were separated by the use of ion subtraction and pharmacological treatments. 2. INa was activated by a step depolarization more positive than -50 mV and fully activated at positive potentials more than +10 mV. The inactivation phase of INa consisted of fast and

The impact of post-processing images of abdominal CT small vessels using contrast enhancement boost technique: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate visualization of small abdominal arteries is crucial for diagnosis, preoperative evaluation, and treatment planning, especially in hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. However, due to their small calibers and rapid contrast transit, consistent delineation of these vessels remains challenging in conventional computed tomography (CT) angiography. Recent advancements in image postprocessing, such as contrast enhancement boost (CE-Boost) techniques, offer opportunities to improve vascular conspicuity without additional radiation or contrast agent. This study aimed to evaluat

Validity of PETRA-MRA for Stent-Assisted Coil Embolization of Intracranial Aneurysms.

OBJECTIVE: Pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition (PETRA) using magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a non-enhanced MRA technique employing an ultrashort echo time, and is known to significantly reduce the magnetic susceptibility of coils and stents during post-embolization imaging. We evaluated the quality of PETRA-MRA images for use at the follow-up assessment of stent-assisted coil embolization procedures performed to treat aneurysms. METHODS: A total of six aneurysm patients who were treated by stent-assisted coil embolization were included. All patients underwent PE

Predictive factors of medullary infarction after endovascular internal trapping using coils for vertebral artery dissecting aneurysms.

OBJECTIVE The first choice of treatment in cases of vertebral artery dissecting aneurysms (VADAs) is endovascular internal trapping (EIT) of the dissecting segment using coils. However, this procedure carries the risk of medullary infarction, and the risk factors for this complication are not well understood. This study investigated the risk factors causing medullary infarction. METHODS One hundred patients who underwent EIT for VADAs were included in this study. Ninety-three patients presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage. In cases involving the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA), pa

The angiosomes of the forearm: anatomic study and clinical implications.

The angiosome concept was introduced in 1987 by Taylor and Palmer. Their anatomic study correlated the blood supply to the skin from the nam … ches with colored pins coded to match the respective source arteries. In the case of the muscles, a subtraction technique was used whereby the bones of the extremity were replaced with radiolucent balloons to obtain an unobscured picture of the forearm vasculature. Then the muscles were removed one by one from the muscle mass and x-rayed again. In this way, the angioso …

[Dolichoectatic intracranial arteries. Advances in images and therapeutics].

Dolichoectasia of intracranial arteries is an infrequent disease with an incidence less than 0.05% in general population. It represents 7% of all intracranial aneurysms. Commonly seen in middle age patients with severe atherosclerosis and hypertension, the affected arteries include the basilar artery, supraclinoid segment of the internal carotid artery, middle, anterior and posterior cerebral arteries; males are more frequently affected. The clinical features of these fusiform aneurysms are divided in three categories: ische-mic, cranial nerve compression and signs from mass effect. Hemorrhage

Monte Carlo-based optimization of CTV-to-PTV margins for image-guided VMAT prostate radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The van Herk margin formula, derived for 3-D conformal radiotherapy with a uniform 3.2 mm dose penumbra and no intrinsic dose buffer, remains widely used to design CTV-to-PTV expansions in contemporary image-guided prostate radiotherapy. However, coplanar VMAT techniques often feature broader penumbrae and explicit PTV-isodose clearances, potentially violating the assumptions underlying the original formulation and leading to overly conservative margins. PURPOSE: We investigated whether the widely adopted van Herk margin formula overestimates clinical target volume (CTV)-to-planni

Ultrasound Versus Age-Based Formula for Predicting Endotracheal Tube Size in Pediatric Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia: A Randomized Comparative Study.

Introduction Selection of an appropriately sized endotracheal tube (ETT) in pediatric patients is critical to ensure adequate ventilation and minimize airway-related complications. Age-based formulae are commonly used but often fail to account for inter-individual anatomical variability. Ultrasonographic assessment of the subglottic airway offers a patient-specific alternative that may aid in selecting the optimal ETT size. This study compared ultrasound-guided estimation of ETT size with the age-based formula (internal diameter = age/4 + 3.5) and evaluated their agreement with the clinically

Different Risk Factors of Rod Fracture between L5-S1 and ≥ L4-5 Levels in Adult Spinal Deformity Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Given the different biomechanical properties and surgical techniques between L5-S1 and at ≥ L4-5 levels, different factors might contribute to rod fracture (RF) development between the L5-S1 and ≥ L4-5 levels. Recognizing segment-specific risk factors can be helpful when planning surgery. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the risk factors for RF separately for L5-S1 and ≥ L4-5 levels after adult spinal deformity surgery. METHODS: This study analyzed consecutive patients who underwent ≥ 5-level fusion including the sacrum or pelvis and were followed up for ≥ 2 years. RF was ass

Impact of measurement location on direct mitral regurgitation quantification using four-dimensional flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance.

BACKGROUND: Four-dimensional (4D) flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) shows promise for quantifying mitral regurgitation (MR) by allowing for direct regurgitant volume (RVol) measurement using a plane precisely placed at the MR jet. However, the ideal location of a measurement plane remains unclear. This study aims to systematically examine how varying measurement locations affect RVol quantification and determine the optimal location using the momentum conservation principle of a free jet. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with MR by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and scheduled for

Comparison of Ultra-High-Resolution and Normal-Resolution CT-Angiography for Intracranial Aneurysm Detection in Patients with Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Ruptured intracranial aneurysms (IAs) are the leading cause for atraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage. In case of aneurysm rupture, patients may face life-threatening complications and require aneurysm occlusion. Detection of the aneurysm in computed tomography (CT) imaging is therefore essential for patient outcome. This study provides an evaluation of the diagnostic accuracy of Ultra-High-Resolution Computed Tomography Angiography (UHR-CTA) and Normal-Resolution Computed Tomography Angiography (NR-CTA) concerning IA detection and characterization.
