Behavioral components of tolerance to repeated inhalation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in rats.

The possibility that the acute neurotoxic effects of organic solvents change with repeated exposure will affect risk assessment of these pollutants. We observed previously that rats inhaling trichloroethylene (TCE) showed a progressive attenuation of impairment of signal detection behavior across several weeks of intermittent exposure, suggesting the development of tolerance. Here, we explored the development of tolerance to TCE during two weeks of daily exposures, and the degree to which learned behavioral modifications ("behavioral tolerance") could account for the effect. Adult Long-Evans r

The influences of rearing environment and neonatal choline dietary supplementation on spatial learning and memory in adult rats.

The facilitative effects of early environmental enrichment and perinatal choline chloride dietary supplementation on adult rat spatial learning and memory were examined using delayed match-to-place (DMTP) and delayed spatial win-shift (DSWSh) discrimination tasks. Animals were either maintained in a standard lighted colony (LR) or were given supplementary exposure to a complex environment (CR) for 2-h daily from 20 to 90 days of age. In each case, half the animals were exposed to the choline supplementation both prenatally (through the diet of pregnant rats) and postnatally (subcutaneous injec

Impact of muscle fatigue on anticipatory postural adjustments during gait initiation.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged or strenuous exercise leads to a temporary decrease in muscle function and performance, which interferes with activity of both prime movers and postural muscles. This effect of fatigue has been reported both for single segment movements and for locomotion. However, little is known regarding the effects of fatigue on anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) during gait initiation, a task in which the control of focal movement should be strictly coupled to a feedforward control of posture. METHODS: We studied APAs during gait initiation in 16 healthy well-trained adult m

Milnacipran Ameliorates Executive Function Impairments following Frontal Lobe Traumatic Brain Injury in Male Rats: A Multimodal Behavioral Assessment.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) affect more than 10 million patients annually worldwide, causing long-term cognitive and psychosocial impairments. Frontal lobe TBIs commonly impair executive function, but laboratory models typically focus primarily on spatial learning and declarative memory. We implemented a multi-modal approach for clinically relevant cognitive-behavioral assessments of frontal lobe function in rats with TBI and assessed treatment benefits of the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, milnacipran (MLN). Two attentional set-shifting tasks (AST) evaluated cognitive flexib

Prolonged Extreme Cold Water Diving and the Acute Stress Response During Military Dive Training.

Introduction: Cold water exposure poses a unique physiological challenge to the human body. Normally, water submersion increases activation of parasympathetic tone to induce bradycardia in order to compensate for hemodynamic shifts and reduce oxygen consumption by peripheral tissues. However, elevated stress, such as that which may occur due to prolonged cold exposure, may shift the sympatho-vagal balance towards sympathetic activation which may potentially negate the dive reflex and impact thermoregulation. Objective: To quantify the acute stress response during prolonged extreme cold water d

Time-to-event prediction using survival analysis methods for Alzheimer's disease progression.

INTRODUCTION: Many research studies have well investigated Alzheimer's disease (AD) detection and progression. However, the continuous-time survival prediction of AD is not yet fully explored to support medical practitioners with predictive analytics. In this study, we develop a survival analysis approach to examine interactions between patients' inherent temporal and medical patterns and predict the probability of the AD next stage progression during a time period. The likelihood of reaching the following AD stage is unique to a patient, helping the medical practitioner analyze the patient's

Performance and Kinematic Differences in Putting between Healthy and Disabled Elite Golfers.

Golfers with disability are limited in the execution of the full golf swing, but their performance in putting may be comparable because this stroke does not demand significant strength, balance and range of motion. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare putting performance, kinetic and kinematic consistency between golfers with different disabilities and healthy athletes. The participants consisted of three disabled athletes (perinatal cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, below knee lower limb amputee) and three healthy golfers (age 34 ± 4.5 years, body height 178 ± 3.3 cm, body mass 8

Classification and cue weighting of multidimensional stimuli with speech-like cues for young normal hearing and elderly hearing-impaired listeners.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate how young normal-hearing (YNH) and elderly hearing-impaired (EHI) listeners make use of redundant speech-like cues when classifying nonspeech sounds having multiple stimulus dimensions. DESIGN: A total of four experiments were conducted with 10 to 12 listeners per group in each experiment. There were 27 stimuli, making use of all possible combinations of three stimulus values along each of three cue dimensions. Stimuli were comprised of two brief sequential noise bursts separated by a temporal gap. Stimulus dimensions were: (1) the cente

Manganese and welding fume exposure and control in construction.

Overexposure to welding fume constituents, particularly manganese, is of concern in the construction industry due to the prevalence of welding and the scarcity of engineering controls. The control effectiveness of a commercially available portable local exhaust ventilation (LEV) unit was assessed. It consisted of a portable vacuum and a small bell-shaped hood connected by a flexible 2 inch (50.8 mm) diameter hose, in both experimental and field settings. The experimental testing was done in a semienclosed booth at a pipefitter training facility. Five paired trials of LEV control vs. no control

Oxytocin selectively enhances the recognition of infant sadness in postpartum depression.

BackgroundLittle is known about the role of oxytocin in the processing of positive emotional infant cues in mothers with PPD.ObjectivesWe therefore examined whether intranasal oxytocin influences postpartum mothers' processing of positive infant emotional cues, both visual (facial expressions) and auditory (laughter), and intended caregiving responses.DesignThis double-blind randomized controlled crossover study included 45 mothers, with 3- to 9-month-old infants, who exhibited clinically relevant scores on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, with 35 mothers fulfilling the criteria of a

Causality-Based Modality- and Platform-Invariant Representation Learning for Dynamic RGBT Tracking and a Benchmark.

Each sequence in existing RGBT tracking datasets is typically captured from a single platform equipped with both RGB (visible light) and TIR (thermal infrared) sensors. In real-world applications, tracking some objects requires cross-platform collaboration and these platforms might be equipped with different sensors. However, changes in modalities and platforms may cause significant variations in target appearance and abrupt position shifts, which existing RGBT trackers struggle to handle. To address these challenges, we define a new task, termed dynamic RGBT tracking, focusing on cross-platfo

When words disrupt flavour memory: Verbal overshadowing in gustatory recognition.

Verbal overshadowing (VO) refers to the phenomenon whereby recognition of a stimulus becomes impaired after it has been verbally described, an effect that has been extensively documented in the visual domain. However, VO in gustatory recognition remains underexplored. This is despite the fact that gustation is lexically more impoverished than vision across many languages, including English and Chinese. The present study reports three experiments examining whether and how verbalisation disrupts gustatory recognition. In Experiment 1, forty native speakers of Mandarin Chinese were randomly assig

Two-stage adversarial learning based unsupervised domain adaptation for retinal OCT segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Deep learning based optical coherence tomography (OCT) segmentation methods have achieved excellent results, allowing quantitative analysis of large-scale data. However, OCT images are often acquired by different devices or under different imaging protocols, which leads to serious domain shift problem. This in turn results in performance degradation of segmentation models. PURPOSE: Aiming at the domain shift problem, we propose a two-stage adversarial learning based network (TSANet) that accomplishes unsupervised cross-domain OCT segmentation. METHODS: In the first stage, a Fouri

Voluntary wheel running access produces opposite effects in male and female rats on both palatable diet consumption and associated ventral striatal opioid- and dopamine-related gene expression.

The relationship between physical activity levels and feeding behaviors has been a focus of preclinical research for decades, yet this interaction has only recently been explored for potential sex differences. The aim of the present study was to isolate sex-dependent effects of voluntary wheel running (RUN) vs. sedentary locked wheel (SED) home cage conditions on palatability-driven feeding behavior using a 2-diet choice task between standard chow and a high-fat diet. The sex-dependent effects of physical activity on feeding behavior were examined following a within-subject novel reversal desi

Environmental enrichment enhances recovery of function but exacerbates ischemic cell death.

Prior exposure to brief 'conditioning' episodes of ischemia protects hippocampal CA1 neurons against a subsequent more severe ischemic insult. However, protected cells exhibit abnormal function and as survival times are extended this ischemic tolerance dissipates and cells begin to die. In this study, we sought to determine whether environmental enrichment could alter the above pattern of delayed cell death and functional impairment in a gerbil model of ischemic tolerance. Gerbils received either ischemic preconditioning, 5 min of ischemia without preconditioning or sham surgery. Three days af

[Pathogenesis and treatment of accommodative disturbance].

Using a computer-assisted infrared optometer with a pupillograph, we tried to obtain basic understanding of accommodative disturbance and its by investigating tonic (dark focus) level of accommodation and quasi-static accommodative response. In normal volunteers in whom either visual fatigue, general fatigue, or drunkeness was loaded intentionally, myopic shift of refraction, increased refractive fluctuation, and miosis were induced in all cases but the effect on amplitude of accommodative response was minimal. Subjects that worked at a computer terminal all day for 2 years, but not controls,

Automation in the IVF laboratory in 2026: four technology domains, an asymmetric evidence base, and the case for parallel development with clinician-side automation.

BACKGROUND: Operator-dependent laboratory tasks-embryo selection, vitrification and warming, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)-have been the principal targets of IVF laboratory automation, and a fourth strand of work, integrated end-to-end laboratory automation, has produced its first peer-reviewed clinical evidence in 2026. Clinician-side automation in the same ART cycle has an older, broader literature that provides a useful comparator for what laboratory-side automation has and has not yet achieved. OBJECTIVES: To synthesize the published evidence on automation of these laborator

Psychotherapists' Trust, Distrust, and Generative AI Practices in Psychotherapy: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly used in mental health care, from client-facing chatbots to clinician-facing documentation aids. Psychotherapists' willingness to rely on-or withhold reliance from-these tools has significant implications for care quality, yet little is known about how practicing clinicians calibrate trust and distrust in GenAI across tasks and contexts. Given that the therapeutic relationship is central to psychotherapy outcomes, understanding how GenAI intersects with this relational foundation is essential for responsible integration. OB

Estimation and Validation of Flour Exposure in Bakeries in Alberta, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: In epidemiological studies of work-related ill-health only current exposures can, at best, be measured. Previous exposures may be estimated using contemporaneous hygiene records or published data. This study aimed to create a job exposure matrix for exposure in bakers for use in an ongoing cohort study. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted of English language publications on exposures in bakeries. All publications that appeared to contain quantitative measures of exposure to flour dust, wheat allergen, or fungal α-amylase were read independently by two investigators and rele
