Immunization against diseases caused by Theileria parva: a review.

Theileria parva is the causative agent of three epidemiologically different diseases, East Coast fever (ECF), Corridor disease and January disease, caused by 3 types of T. parva, T. p. parva, T. p. lawrencei and T. p. bovis, respectively. The history of immunization against these diseases has been marked by salient discoveries such as the immune status in recovered animals, the activity of tetracyclines during the incubation period, the possibility for cryopreserving supernatant of prefed ticks and the development of useful serological tests. The possibility of simultaneous administration of s

Molecular epidemiology and phylogenetics of canine haemoprotozoan and rickettsial infections in southern India.

Haemoprotozoan infections pose significant health risks to dogs, especially in tropical regions. This study investigated the epidemiology and molecular characteristics of Babesia gibsoni, Babesia vogeli, Hepatozoon canis, Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma platys, and Rickettsia spp. in 120 clinically affected dogs from southern India (November 2023-September 2024). Dogs exhibiting pyrexia, anorexia, and thrombocytopenia were screened via blood smear microscopy and PCR. Babesia spp. were most prevalent (66.7 %, 80/120), with co-infections of B. gibsoni and B. vogeli (76.3 % of Babesia-positive cases)

Molecular survey of piroplasm species from selected areas of China and Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Piroplasmosis is an important animal disease that is a major constraint to the development of the livestock industry, often resulting in significant economic losses. Therefore, there is an urgent need to further understand the etiology of this and other tick-borne infections. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from tick-infested animals from the Chakwal, Jhang, and Faisalabad districts of Punjab, Pakistan and from peri-urban areas around Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China to investigate the presence of Babesia and Theileria species. In total, 450 blood samples were collected with FT

Wild birds as sentinels for multiple zoonotic pathogens along an urban to rural gradient in greater Chicago, Illinois.

Wild birds are important in the maintenance and transmission of many zoonotic pathogens. With increasing urbanization and the resulting emergence of zoonotic diseases, it is critical to understand the relationships among birds, vectors, zoonotic pathogens, and the urban landscape. Here, we use wild birds as sentinels across a gradient of urbanization to understand the relative risk of diseases caused by three types of zoonotic pathogens: Salmonella pathogens, mosquito-borne West Nile virus (WNV) and tick-borne pathogens, including the agents of Lyme disease and human anaplasmosis. Wild birds w

Serologic proteome analysis of Borrelia burgdorferi membrane-associated proteins.

Lyme disease, a global health concern, is caused by infection with Borrelia burgdorferi, B. afzelii, or B. garinii. The spirochete responsible for the disease in the United States is B. burgdorferi and is spread by the bite of an infected Ixodes tick. We utilized multiple two-dimensional gel techniques combined with proteomics to reveal the full humoral immune response of mice and Lyme patients to membrane-associated proteins isolated from Borrelia burgdorferi. Our studies indicated that a subset of immunogenic membrane-associated proteins (some new and some previously identified) was recogniz

Diversity of Ixodes-borne Borrelia species--clinical, pathogenetic, and diagnostic implications and impact on vaccine development.

Among Borrelia spirochetes carried by hard ticks belonging to the various Ixodes species, at least 10 species can be distinguished. Of these, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto is involved in human Lyme borreliosis in North America and Europe, and Borrelia garinii and Borrelia afzelii in human disease in Europe and Asia. The pathogenetic significance of the other species is uncertain. Although some of the Borrelia species are restricted to certain tick species, Ixodes ricinus, the vector of Lyme borreliosis in Europe, can be infested by at least five different species, including all three path

[Vacation souvenirs: inoculation pathologies (cutaneous larva migrans, cutaneous leishmaniases, Lyme disease, rickettsioses)].

Residents of western countries travel more and more to (sub)tropical areas for holidays or work. During their stay they come in contact with insects and parasites susceptible to induce skin disorders that can manifest during their stay or after returning. This dermatosis account for approximatively 10% of referral to outpatient tropical clinics. The aim of this paper is to provide family physicians not familiar with these pathologies some practical guidelines to help them to identify and treat some tropical dermatosis: cutaneous larva migrans, cutaneous leishmaniasis, Lyme disease, rickettsios

Prevalence of Piroplasma in Ticks Collected from Dogs and Cattle in Guangxi, South China Determined by Reverse Line Blot Hybridization Assay.

Piroplasmosis is a disease of domestic and wild animals caused by tick-borne protozoa of the genera Theileria and Babesia. Piroplasmosis leads to substantial economic losses in the livestock industry. This disease has been frequently reported in subtropical and tropical regions worldwide. However, information regarding the prevalence of piroplasma in ticks collected from dogs and cattle is lacking in most areas. To assess the potential threat of piroplasmosis in South China, 671 ticks were collected in Guangxi Province. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was extracted from these ticks to evaluate the

Immunologic and molecular identification of Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina in free-ranging white-tailed deer in northern Mexico.

The suitability of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) as hosts for the cattle ticks Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus, has been well documented. These ticks have a wide host range, and both transmit Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina, the agents responsible for bovine babesiosis. Although this disease and its vectors have been eradicated from the United States and some states in northern Mexico, it still is a problem in other Mexican states. It is not known if wild cervids like white-tailed deer can act as reservoirs for bovine babesiosis. The

First culture isolation of Borrelia lonestari, putative agent of southern tick-associated rash illness.

Southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI) is a Lyme disease-like infection described in patients in the southeastern and south-central United States, where classic Lyme disease is relatively rare. STARI develops following the bite of a lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) and is thought to be caused by infection with an "uncultivable" spirochete tentatively named Borrelia lonestari. In this study, wild lone star ticks collected from an area where B. lonestari is endemic were cocultured in an established embryonic tick cell line (ISE6). The cultures were examined by dark-field microscopy f

Ectoparasite Infestations in Wild Mammals from the Lake Van Basin, Eastern Türkiye, with Notes on New Host Records.

Ectoparasites cause skin lesions, anemia, and mortality in wild animals and act as vectors of zoonotic pathogens. This study reports ectoparasites detected during an opportunistic survey on wild mammals admitted to the Van Yuzuncu Yil University Wildlife Protection and Rehabilitation Center in eastern Türkiye during 2024-2025. Due to the opportunistic nature of sampling, the findings primarily reflect parasite burdens in injured or debilitated individuals and may not be representative of healthy free-ranging populations. Of the 28 animals examined, 20 (71.4%) were infested. A total of 449 ecto

Leveraging location intelligence and individual-based modeling to simulate Rhipicephalus microplus infestation and eradication dynamics at the cattle-wildlife interface.

Cattle fever ticks (CFT), Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus and R. (B.) microplus, threaten the economic security of the USA cattle industry as vectors of Babesia bigemina and B. bovis. Of the two CFT, R. microplus has a more invasive biology and thrives in tropical and subtropical ecosystems. The U.S. Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program successfully eliminated CFT from the southern USA and has since prevented CFT re-establishment by operating surveillance and quarantine in South Texas, including the permanent quarantine zone along the Texas-Mexico border. However, introductions and succes
