BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study aimed to investigate and compare the efficacy and safety of first-line and second-line selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) in Japanese patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG).
METHODS: 100 patients with NTG were enrolled in this study. Patients were treated with SLT as a first-line or second-line treatment for NTG. Main outcome measures were intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction rate, outflow pressure improvement rate (ΔOP), success rate at 1 year and complications. Success was defined as ΔOP≥20% (criterion A) or an IOP reduction ≥20% (criterion B) without add

This study was designed to compare the efficacy of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) and micropulse laser trabeculoplasty (MLT) in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) requiring additional IOP control. In this retrospective, comparative study, we reviewed the charts of POAG patients requiring additional IOP lowering, who underwent either SLT or MLT and were followed for at least one year. We evaluated mean intraocular pressure (IOP), mean IOP reduction from baseline and mean number of glaucoma medications 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after treatment. Success rates (success defined as

PURPOSE: To report on the incidence, characteristics, and treatment of glaucoma in association with aniridia in a population of Egyptian children.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of children (<18 years of age) presenting with aniridia between 2007 and 2022. Diagnosis of glaucoma was based on cup:disk ratio (>0.3) and IOP (>16 mm Hg). Success of glaucoma surgery was defined as IOP ≤16 mm Hg and stable or regressing cup:disk ratio.
RESULTS: A total of 93 eyes of 47 children were included. The mean patient age at presentation was 41.2 ± 44.7 months. The mean intraocular pres

PRÉCIS: Angle procedures are safe and relatively effective for neonatal onset PCG. Watchful delay in intervention to close to the second month of life is helpful in ensuring diagnosis and making surgery more successful and easier.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the surgical outcomes of visco-circumferential-suture-trabeculotomy (VCST) to rigid-probe double-entry viscotrabeculotomy (DEVT) and rigid-probe single-entry viscotrabeculotomy (SEVT) in infants with neonatal-onset primary congenital glaucoma (PCG).
DESIGN: This was a retrospective chart review.

PURPOSE: Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a first-line intervention for glaucoma, with the aim to reduce the intraocular pressure (IOP). Topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are sometimes prescribed after SLT. However, it has been proposed that such treatment may either increase or reduce SLT efficacy. The purpose of this study was to investigate this further.
METHODS: The study was a retrospective chart review, including 192 eyes of 192 patients, half of which received a course of NSAID eyedrops after SLT. Absolute and relative IOP reduction 3-12 weeks after SLT was

A 51-year-old woman was referred with uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) despite maximal medical IOP-lowering therapy. Her background included several failed glaucoma filtering surgeries, including aqueous drainage devices. Considering the need to perform surgery in a patient with both scarred conjunctiva and corneal endothelial deficiency, a surgical technique combining cornea-friendly XEN stent connected to a large-plate Baerveldt glaucoma implant was undertaken. Unfortunately, XEN implants obstructed twice during the early postoperative period. As further XEN replacements were unfeasib

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of trabeculotomy in the treatment of pediatric uveitic glaucoma (UG).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all cases that underwent trabeculotomy for pediatric UG at our center between 2008 and 2014. Up to 2 trabeculotomies per eye were performed in patients with medically controlled uveitis. Surgical success was defined as final intraocular pressure <22 mm Hg and ≥6 mm Hg after 1 or 2 trabeculotomies, with or without medications. Kaplan-Meier survival analyses were done.
RESULTS: A total of 33 trabeculotomies were performed in 28 ey

Proximate causes of intraocular pressure (IOP) decompensation accompanied with persistent pain syndrome were determined based on results of morphological examination of 59 eyes enucleated due to terminal previously operated glaucoma and medical history analysis. Excessive scarring, formation of solid hyalinized membrane in the site of filter pad, closure of anterior chamber angle with synechia as an outcome of chronic iridocyclitis and inappropriate surgical approach lead to increase in the resistance of the aqueous humor outflow and result in glaucoma decompensation causing complications that

Steroid induced ocular hypertension and glaucoma represent iatrogenic changes of pharmacogenic nature. They are mainly due to exogenous steroids following ocular periocular, intravitreal and systemic administration. Elevated ocular pressure is brought about by structural trabecular changes as well as obstruction of the outflow ways of the aqueous humor localized within the trabecular juxtacanalicular area. Although mostly raised ocular pressure spontaneously descends to basal values after ceasing the steroid therapy, progressive optic nerve damages and glaucomatous visual field defects may occ

BACKGROUND: The development of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs) in eyes with a history of congenital glaucoma (CG) is very rare. We present the characteristics and surgical outcomes of three cases with a RRD who had CG and had undergone surgery many years earlier.
CASES: Three men, ages 14, 43, and 48 years of age, each with a history of surgery for primary CG, presented with a RRD. All of the eyes were highly myopic. The retinal tears were located at the equator in all cases. The degree of RRD were superior half, total, and total (proliferative vitreoretinopathy).
