Epidemiology of glaucoma in Japan--a nationwide glaucoma survey.

A population-based, collaborative glaucoma survey was conducted in seven regions throughout Japan, during the years of 1988 and 1989. The total number of subjects examined was 8,126 out of 16,078 residents aged 40 years or older, representing a participation rate of 50.54%. There were no significant differences in background factors between participants and randomly sampled nonparticipants. A mainstay of the screening consisted of tonometry and fundus photography with nonmydriatic camera, followed by automatic perimetry as a recall examination. Overall prevalences obtained were primary open-an

Ocular and nonocular findings in patients with aniridia.

BACKGROUND: Aniridia typically appears as a familial condition with autosomal dominant inheritance but can present as an isolated disease or sporadically in association with several syndromes. In this report we describe the various ocular manifestations of aniridia as well as the association of familial aniridia with two different ocular and systemic abnormalities present across three generations in two different families. METHODS: Descriptive case series of 33 patients (66 eyes) with aniridia. A full eye examination was performed at the beginning of the study, including past medical history,

Missed Opportunities for Fall Prevention: Primary Care Follow-Up After Emergency Department Discharge in Older Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Evaluation by a primary care provider (PCP) after an emergency department (ED) visit for a fall is crucial for preventing future falls. However, little is known about the current practice of fall risk assessments and interventions across community and academic primary care clinics. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of adults 65 and older discharged home after a fall from 9 EDs in Michigan. All primary care visits within 90 days of the index ED visit were included. Patients were excluded if they had a PCP outside of our health system. The primary outcome was the

Presbyopia correction with multifocal contact lenses: Evaluation of silent reading performance using eye movements analysis.

PURPOSE: Many activities of daily living rely on reading, thus is not surprising that complaints from presbyopes originate in reading difficulties rather in visual acuity. Here, the effectiveness of presbyopia correction with multifocal contact lenses (CLs) is evaluated using an eye-fixation based method of silent reading performance. ΜETHODS: Visual performance of thirty presbyopic volunteers (age: 50 ± 5 yrs) was assessed monocularly and binocularly following 15 days of wear of monthly disposable CLs (AIR OPTIX™ plus HydraGlyde™, Alcon Laboratories) with: (a) single vision (SV) lenses - unco

Practice Patterns of Fundoscopic Examination for Diabetic Retinopathy Screening in Primary Care.

IMPORTANCE: Primary care professionals (PCPs) have a central role in screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR), especially in settings where access to specialty eye care is limited. Data on current DR screening practice patterns in primary care are needed to inform screening strategies. OBJECTIVES: To assess the practice patterns of fundoscopic examination for DR screening in a large primary care network and to evaluate the sensitivity and accuracy of PCP fundoscopy for detecting DR. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective cohort study was performed using random sampling and manual

Physiotherapy Management of Computer Vision Syndrome and Associated Musculoskeletal Dysfunction in Young Adults: A Systematic Review of Evidence-Based Rehabilitation Approaches.

INTRODUCTION: Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is a cluster of ocular and musculoskeletal complaints linked to heavy digital device use, and a growing body of evidence ties CVS to postural strain in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Even so, physiotherapy-based management of this combined presentation remains poorly consolidated in the literature. This review appraised the available evidence on physiotherapy interventions for CVS and its associated musculoskeletal dysfunction in young adults. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed (National Center for Biotechnology Information, Bethesda, Mar

Remote Management of Patients With Diabetic Macular Edema Receiving Long-Term Intravitreal Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Therapy (RE-SHINE Study): Protocol for a Real-World Study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy is the gold standard for treating diabetic macular edema (DME). However, poor treatment adherence in real-world settings often leads to suboptimal visual outcomes. Evidence-based remote management strategies are required to bridge the gap between clinical protocols and patient self-management. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe a remote management program based on the Behavior Change Wheel model designed to increase treatment adherence and improve disease outcomes for patients with DME receiving long-term a

Associations between vision impairment and eye diseases with dementia, dementia subtypes and cognitive impairment: An umbrella review.

Vision impairment (VI) and eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), glaucoma and cataract have been reported to be associated with cognitive impairment and dementia, however, to date, very little attempt has been made to collate and synthesizes such literature. Therefore, the aim of this umbrella review is to systematically assesses the credibility and certainty of evidence of associations between vision impairment (VI) and eye diseases with cognitive impairment, dementia and dementia subtypes. We conducted an umbrella review of meta-analyses by s

Synthetic artificial intelligence using generative adversarial network for retinal imaging in detection of age-related macular degeneration.

INTRODUCTION: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of vision impairment globally and early detection is crucial to prevent vision loss. However, the screening of AMD is resource dependent and demands experienced healthcare providers. Recently, deep learning (DL) systems have shown the potential for effective detection of various eye diseases from retinal fundus images, but the development of such robust systems requires a large amount of datasets, which could be limited by prevalence of the disease and privacy of patient. As in the case of AMD, the advanced pheno

Near-Infrared Imaging With Indocyanine Green for the Treatment of Endometriosis: Results From the Gre-Endo Trial.

INTRODUCTION: A current challenge for endometriosis surgery is to correctly identify the localizations of disease, especially when small or hidden (occult endometriosis), and to exactly define their real extension. The use of near-infrared radiation imaging (NIR) after injection of indocyanine green (ICG) represents one of the most encouraging method. The aim of this study is to assess the diagnostic value of NIR-ICG imaging in the surgical treatment of endometriosis compared with the standard of treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The Gre-Endo trial is a prospective, single-arm study (NCT033320
