Unveiling Oral Health Impacts of Vaping in African Americans through Untargeted Metabolomics and Proteomics.

Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDSs), commonly termed e-cigarettes, have been advertised as a safer alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes and promoted for smoking cessation. However, emerging evidence suggests a connection between e-cigarette use or vaping and an increased risk of oral disease, particularly among minoritized populations such as Black and African Americans (AAs). AA communities have historically experienced disproportionate harm from tobacco use, which could extend to vaping. In this study, we recruited 20 AAs and 28 individuals of other races, oversampled for v

Barriers and Facilitators for Accessing Oral Health Care for Ukrainian Newcomers to Nova Scotia.

INTRODUCTION: The war in Ukraine has resulted in a mass exodus of Ukrainians fleeing their country and seeking resettlement in many countries, including Canada. There is a lack of literature, particularly qualitative, that explores past experiences with oral health care in the country of origin for newcomers and the experience of access and utilization of oral health care once in Canada. The increase in Ukrainian newcomers to Canada requires an exploration of barriers and facilitators to oral health care access to inform policy. OBJECTIVE: To explore the barriers and facilitators to oral heal

Substance use disorder education via digital outreach: An evaluation of program dissemination and implementation.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) remain a significant public health concern in Alabama, where usage rates for substances such as opioids, alcohol, and tobacco exceed national averages. Vulnerable populations face additional barriers due to stigma, access issues, and systemic inequities. There is a need for accessible, scalable educational interventions targeting both health care professionals and community members. OBJECTIVES: To design, disseminate, and implement a web-based educational initiative-the Substance Use Disorders in Alabama (SUDA) program-to address emerging substance u

Protocol for a randomized controlled trial of an internet-based prevention intervention for young children at-risk for functional abdominal pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain often clusters in families, where parents and their offspring both experience chronic pain conditions. Young children of parents with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) represent an at-risk group for the development of abdominal pain, disability, and excess health care visits in later childhood. Parental solicitous responses to children's expressions of discomfort and maternal modeling of their own illness behavior contribute to a greater focus on somatic sensations, leading to illness behaviors in children. This randomized controlled trial will test the effectiveness of a

Vaping: The Key to Quitting Cigarettes or a Gateway to Addiction?

Background and Objectives: In 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) discovered that 2.55 million middle and high school students were using electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in the US alone. E-cigarettes allow people to inhale a nicotine solution (e-liquid) into their bodies. While e-cigarettes are often advertised as a way to help people quit traditional tobacco products, the World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that there is no proof of e-cigarettes being effective at reducing an individual's tobacco use. The objective of this study is to determine why adolescen

Effect of diet-induced weight loss on iron status and its markers among young women with overweight/obesity and iron deficiency anemia: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity and iron deficiency are prevalent health problems that affect billions of people all over the world. Obesity is postulated to relate to iron deficiency via reduced intestinal iron absorption due to increased serum hepcidin level, which is mediated by chronic inflammation. Weight loss in individuals with overweight or obesity and iron deficiency anemia is believed to be associated with an improvement in iron status however the evidence from clinical trials is scarce. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of diet-induced weight loss on iron status and its markers

Differences between complete and incomplete couples in physical health research: Implications for methods and generalizability.

RATIONALE: Couples-based interventions to facilitate health behavior change and improve disease outcomes are gaining attention from researchers. Dyadic research, however, poses unique methodological challenges that have raised questions about research samples and the generalizability of findings. OBJECTIVE: The current study examined whether couples in which both partners participated (i.e., complete couples) in a couples' health research study systematically differed from those in which only one partner participated (i.e., incomplete couples). METHODS: Between January 2014 and November 2015

Losing sight of Luck: Automatic approach tendencies toward gambling cues in Canadian moderate- to high-risk gamblers - A replication study.

Evidence for approach bias tendencies to underly automatic behavioural impulses towards seeking out gambling activities in the presence of appetitive salient cues was first shown by Boffo et al. (2018) in a Dutch sample. Relative to non-problem gamblers, moderate-to-high-risk gamblers demonstrated stronger approach tendencies towards gambling-related stimuli compared with neutral ones. Moreover, gambling approach bias was associated with past-month gambling behaviour and predictive of gambling activity persistence over time. The current study aimed to replicate these findings within a Canadian

Motor Milestones: Sensory Motor Trends of Young Children with Classic Galactosemia.

Speech problems affect about 66% of children with classic galactosemia (CG), but little is known about early motor and sensory motor development in this at-risk population (Rubio-Gozalbo et al., 2019). Research has been focused on speech and language development leaving a paucity of data on motor and sensory differences. This paper describes preliminary data regarding sensory motor and motor development patterns in young children with CG. Babble Boot Camp© (BBC) is an NIH-funded randomized control trial (RCT) implementing proactive interventions designed to support the speech language developm

Protocol for a randomised feasibility trial comparing a combined program of education and exercise versus general advice for ankle osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Ankle osteoarthritis (OA) is a serious problem with high associated pain and disability. While education and exercise are recommended for the initial management of OA, this has not been investigated in ankle OA. The primary aim of this study is to establish the feasibility of running a full-scale randomised controlled trial (RCT) investigating a combined education and exercise program compared to a general advice program for people with ankle OA. The secondary aims are to collect preliminary data which will inform sample size calculations, and understand the perspectives of people

COVID-19 and the Risk for Increased Intimate Partner Violence Among Gay, Bisexual and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men in the United States.

Stay at home orders-intended to reduce the spread of COVID-19 by limiting social contact-have forced people to remain in their homes. The additional stressors created by the need to stay home and socially isolate may act as triggers to intimate partner violence (IPV). In this article, we present data from a recent online cross-sectional survey with gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in the United States to illustrate changes in IPV risks that have occurred during the U.S. COVID-19 epidemic. The Love and Sex in the Time of COVID-19 survey was conducted online from April t

Youths' Perceived Impact of Invalidation and Validation on Their Mental Health Treatment Journeys.

Youths' experiences in seeking and accessing help for mental health problems can have pervasive and lasting effects on personal and interpersonal functioning. In particular, youth who experience validating experiences presumably persevere in seeking help and generally have positive treatment outcomes, whereas youth who experience invalidation are also likely to experience, at least in the short term, ruptures in therapeutic relationships, shame, and reluctance to seek services. The goal of the current study was to expand on previous research assessing youths' interactions with mental health pr
