The maze operation is a newly developed surgical procedure for patients with chronic atrial fibrillation. Between September 25, 1987, and December 31, 1992, 75 patients (53 men, 22 women; average age, 52 years) underwent the maze procedure for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. The records of 187 patients with permanent atrial pacemakers implanted between 1970 and 1980 were studied retrospectively to define the indications, outcome and short- and long-term complications of single-chamber atrial pacing. We investigated the effectiveness of noninvasive transcutaneous pacing in 35 patients. Pacing was achieved in 33 of 35 patients (94%). In 24 patients the indications were: acute sinoatrial block, atrioventricular block, or asystole with unconsciousness due to acute myocardial infarction in eight; sick sinus node syndrome in 12; and other indications in four patients.
