BACKGROUND: Traumatic dental injury (TDI) is a common dental emergency, yet prevalence data from Taiwan have relied mainly on questionnaire surveys. This study investigated TDI epidemiology in an emergency department setting and identified factors associated with combination injury, defined as the simultaneous presence of tooth hard tissue and periodontal injury.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included all patients with TDI affecting permanent dentition who presented to the Emergency Department of National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Tainan, Taiwan, between January and December

Localized trauma-associated developmental enamel defects and non-cavitated enamel opacities in the anterior dentition can produce marked esthetic concerns, particularly when associated with childhood trauma to primary teeth and subsequent defects in permanent successors. Conventional restorative treatment may require unnecessary removal of sound enamel, whereas minimally invasive approaches aim to preserve tooth structure while improving optical integration. This case report describes two de-identified male patients aged 17 and 18 years who presented with whitish-brown discoloration and uncomp

BACKGROUND: Posterior bite raisers are frequently used in orthodontics, yet the magnitude of the resulting anterior overbite change shows substantial interindividual variability. This study aimed to identify dental and cephalometric characteristics that explain interindividual variability in anterior overbite opening following standardized posterior bite raiser placement.
METHODOLOGY: Forty-seven subjects (7-56 years of age) with a recent lateral cephalogram were recruited. Digital intraoral impressions of the dentition were taken before and after temporary placement of a 2mm-diameter stainle

OBJECTIVES: To compare the salivary proteome between nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or palate (nsCL/P) patients and nonaffected individuals using a cross-sectional study design, and exploring the influence of age, sex, caries and cleft type on the salivary proteome.
METHODS: Stimulated saliva samples were collected from 184 patients. Subjects with DMFT/dmft (sum of decayed/missing/filled teeth in both the permanent and deciduous dentition) ≥ 5 were classified as 'with caries'. Proteins were semi-quantified by mass spectrometry and analysed with Partial Least Square (PLS) in 101 patients (77 nsCL/

Secondary alveolar bone grafting (SABG) during mixed dentition is the standard of care for patients with complete cleft of lip and palate. Early SABG (E-SABG; 4 to 7 y) occurs before the eruption of lateral incisors, whereas late SABG (L-SABG; 8 to 12 y) occurs before the eruption of maxillary permanent canines. This study compares outcomes of E-SABG versus L-SABG among patients with unilateral cleft of lip and palate (UCLP). A prospective cohort study was conducted evaluating nonsyndromic patients with UCLP who underwent SABG from April 2018 to January 2020, 48 consecutive patients with UCLP

INTRODUCTION: Rickets, growth failure, and recurrent periapical abscesses with fistulae are main signs in patients with X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH). Prevalence of abscesses, pulp chamber features, biochemical findings, disease severity, and PHEX gene mutation were examined.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pulp chambers size, shape, and morphology were assessed by orthopantomography in XLH patients (n = 24, age 5.8 ± 1.6 years) and in sex and age-matched healthy controls (n = 23, age 6.2 ± 1.4 years). XLH patients received conventional treatment (3.5 ± 1.9 years). Pulp chamber features were

INTRODUCTION: General well-being of an individual, particularly oral health, depends on the maintenance of optimal oral hygiene. Evidence-based research has established the role of plaque biofilm as an etiologic factor that increases the risk of developing oral diseases such as dental caries and gingival and periodontal diseases. Brushing with either manual or mechanical toothbrushes is most commonly practiced for the removal of plaque, but its efficiency is limited to surfaces it can access, i.e., facial, lingual, and occlusal surfaces of the teeth. During the mixed dentition period, there is

AIMS: To report dental caries status, related health behaviours and social determinants among a representative sample of adults residing in Jerusalem.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted using a stratified sample of 254 Jewish and married adults aged 35-44 years in Jerusalem. Dental caries status was examined according to DMFT, percentage of caries-free persons and of people maintaining all their natural teeth (no teeth missing due to caries). The results were analysed by the independent variables and interpreted by weighted caries scores for the total Jerusalem population.

OBJECTIVES: Millions of restorative procedures are performed annually in the United States, yet very little is known about their distribution in the general population. With increasing concern about potential adverse health effects of some restorative materials, a better understanding of the extent of exposure to these materials in the population is important. The purpose of this study is to report the prevalence, patterns, and distribution of dental restorative materials in a population of male veterans.
METHODS: This collaborative study with the US Air Force examined 1,166 male veterans to

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Primary teeth trauma has received very little attention compared to permanent teeth due to their eventual exfoliation. Enamel discolorations, hypoplasias, and enamel-surface abnormalities have been reported in the permanent dentition following primary tooth trauma. Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) also have an impact on the quality of life of an individual. The study aims to determine the prevalence of TDI and its association with various risk factors in preschool children in the state of Goa. The primary objective is to determine the prevalence of TDI in primary anterior te

INTRODUCTION: Nonmetric dental traits and the shape, size, or number of dental anomalies are essential to various dental fields such as orthodontics, dental anatomy, anthropology, pathology, and forensic dentistry. Nonetheless, many are not well assessed worldwide. Moreover, most studies are limited to a few nonmetric traits. Therefore, we aimed to examine several nonmetric dental traits/anomalies.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional epidemiological study, ~ 9000 permanent teeth of 331 non-syndromic orthodontic patients (radiographs and dental casts) with fully erupted permanent dentitions (exce

The maintenance of oral health is a crucial aspect of general well-being; however, a significant proportion of the worldwide population experiences a range of oral diseases. Dental caries is a highly prevalent non-communicable disease globally, especially in children and adolescents. Fluoride is involved in the control of dental caries, primarily by decreasing the critical pH for dental hard tissue dissolution and decreasing enamel solubility. Due to the substantial data supporting the efficacy of fluoride in controlling dental caries, many community-level fluoridation initiatives have been de
