Craniosynostosis: a radiological and surgical perspective.

Craniosynostosis is the premature fusion of the cranial sutures. It is identified early in life either due to cosmetic deformity or due to more serious functional complications. Isolated forms of craniosynostosis are much more common and less challenging in their management than their syndromic counterpart. Modern multislice computed tomography and 3D reconstructions have revolutionized surgical planning and follow-up. We review the radiological features of the craniosynostoses, complications, and associated conditions that may alter patient management. Common surgical techniques and postopera

AlzFormer: Multi-modal framework for Alzheimer's classification using MRI and graph-embedded demographics guided by adaptive attention gating.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative progressive disorder and the fifth-leading cause of death in older people. The detection of AD is a very challenging task for clinicians and radiologists due to the complex nature of this disease, thus requiring automatic data-driven machine-learning models to enhance diagnostic accuracy and support expert decision-making. However, machine learning models are hindered by three key limitations, in AD classification:(i) diffuse and subtle structural changes in the brain that make it difficult to capture global pathology (ii) non-unifo

Accurate myocardial T1 mapping at 5T using an improved modified Look-Locker inversion recovery method: A validation study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate myocardial T1 mapping at 5T remains a technical challenge due to field inhomogeneity and prolonged T1 values. The aim of this study was to develop an accurate and clinically applicable myocardial T1 mapping technique for 5T magnetic resonance imaging systems and validate its performance in a multicenter study. METHODS: The proposed method is based on a 5-(3)-3 modified Look-Locker inversion recovery (MOLLI) sequence, dubbed combined-correction MOLLI (coMOLLI), which corrects for both inversion efficiency and readout-induced signal disturbances. Specifically, coMOLLI emplo

Evaluation of image quality of pituitary dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI using time-resolved angiography with interleaved stochastic trajectories (TWIST) and iterative reconstruction TWIST (IT-TWIST).

BACKGROUND: Time-resolved angiography with interleaved stochastic trajectories (TWIST) is a keyhole imaging with frequent sampling of central k-space data and view-sharing for the peripheral k-space of dynamic phases. IT-TWIST is a technique to reconstruct images with a smaller temporal footprint using the same raw data obtained with TWIST by iterative reconstruction. PURPOSE: To compare image quality between TWIST and IT-TWIST in 3D pituitary DCE-MRI. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective observation study. POPULATION: Fifty-one patients (23 men, 28 women) who underwent 3D pituitary DCE-MRI using TWIS

Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis-Current State and Future Directions.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic liver disease characterized by biliary inflammation and fibrosis leading to bile duct strictures, cirrhosis, and carries an increased risk of hepatobiliary malignancies. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is the imaging modality of choice in PSC. As an evolving technology, MRI has other potential applications in the care and study of those patients with PSC. In this review, the authors aim to provide a technical overview on MRI/MRCP and related technologies, summarize its contemp

Intimal flap detected by three-dimensional curved multiplanar reconstruction image in isolated posterior inferior cerebellar artery dissection: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous isolated posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) dissection has been reported more frequently since high-resolution vessel wall magnetic resonance imaging (HR vw-MRI) was introduced to the field. The intimal flap or double lumen, which is commonly reported to be a direct sign of the dissection, is not easily detectable on HR vw-MRI because the size of the PICA is very small and tortuous. CASE PRESENTATION: Two patients with posterior circulation ischemic stroke due to spontaneous isolated PICA dissection underwent HR vw-MRI. The curved multiplanar reconstruction im

Malabsorption Syndromes, Vasculitis, and Other Uncommon Diseases.

MR enterography is frequently ordered for patients with suspected small bowel disorders. In this article, disease-causing malabsorption, vasculitides, and some of the less common small bowel diseases are reviewed. The clinical presentations, diagnostic criteria, and imaging findings of these diseases are discussed. Because the imaging findings in several small bowel diseases are nonspecific and/or overlap, radiologists must correlate clinical data with imaging to develop a narrower differential diagnosis. The unique or characteristic findings in certain diseases are also emphasized.

Quantitative brain morphological analysis in CHARGE syndrome.

CHARGE syndrome (CS) is a rare congenital syndrome characterized by coloboma, heart anomaly, choanal atresia, retardation of growth and development, and genital and ear anomalies. While several neuroimaging studies have revealed abnormalities such as hypoplasia of the semicircular canal, olfactory nerve, cerebellum, and brainstem, no quantitative analysis of brain morphology in CS has been reported. We quantitatively investigated brain morphology in CS participants using structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (N = 10, mean age 14.7 years old) and high-angular resolution diffusion MRI (HAR

Direct Regularization From Co-Registered Contrast MRI Improves Image Quality of MRI-Guided Near-Infrared Spectral Tomography of Breast Lesions.

An approach using direct regularization from co-registered dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic reson- ance images was used to reconstruct near-infrared spectral tomography patient images, which does not need image segmentation. 20 patients with mammography/ultrasound confirmed breast abnormalities were involved in this paper, and the resulting images indicated that tumor total hemoglobin concentration contrast differentiated malignant from benign cases (p-value = 0.021). The approach prod- uced reconstructed images, which significantly reduced surface artifacts near the source-detector location

Combining tractography and cortical measures to test system-specific hypotheses in multiple sclerosis.

The objective was to test three motor system-specific hypotheses in multiple sclerosis patients: (i) corticospinal tract and primary motor cortex imaging measures differ between multiple sclerosis patients and controls; (ii) in patients, these measures correlate with disability; (iii) in patients, corticospinal tract measures correlate with measures of the ipsilateral primary motor cortex. Eleven multiple sclerosis patients with a history of hemiparesis attributable to a lesion within the contralateral corticospinal tract, and 12 controls were studied. We used two advanced imaging techniques:

Structure from planar motion.

Planar motion is arguably the most dominant type of motion in surveillance videos. The constraints on motion lead to a simplified factorization method for structure from planar motion when using a stationary perspective camera. Compared with methods for general motion, our approach has two major advantages: a measurement matrix that fully exploits the motion constraints is formed such that the new measurement matrix has a rank of at most 3, instead of 4; the measurement matrix needs similar scalings, but the estimation of fundamental matrices or epipoles is not needed. Experimental results sho

Hyperspectral confocal microscope.

We have developed a new, high performance, hyperspectral microscope for biological and other applications. For each voxel within a three-dimensional specimen, the microscope simultaneously records the emission spectrum from 500 nm to 800 nm, with better than 3 nm spectral resolution. The microscope features a fully confocal design to ensure high spatial resolution and high quality optical sectioning. Optical throughput and detection efficiency are maximized through the use of a custom prism spectrometer and a backside thinned electron multiplying charge coupled device (EMCCD) array. A custom r

AI lesion tracking in PET/CT imaging: a proposal for a Siamese-based CNN pipeline applied to PSMA PET/CT scans.

PURPOSE: Assessing tumor response to systemic therapies is one of the main applications of PET/CT. Routinely, only a small subset of index lesions out of multiple lesions is analyzed. However, this operator dependent selection may bias the results due to possible significant inter-metastatic heterogeneity of response to therapy. Automated, AI-based approaches for lesion tracking hold promise in enabling the analysis of many more lesions and thus providing a better assessment of tumor response. This work introduces a Siamese CNN approach for lesion tracking between PET/CT scans. METHODS: Our a

Impact of the Addition of Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) to Standard 2D Digital Screening Mammography on the Rates of Patient Recall, Cancer Detection, and Recommendations for Short-term Follow-up.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The addition of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) to digital screening mammography (DM) has been shown to decrease recall rates and improve cancer detection rates, but there is a lack of data regarding the impact of DBT on rates of short-term follow-up. We assessed possible changes in performance measures with the introduction of DBT at our facility. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our observational study, databases were used to compare rates of recall, short-term follow-up, biopsy, and cancer detection between women undergoing DM without (n = 10,477) and women undergoing
