Mapping the social network: tracking lice in a wild primate (Microcebus rufus) population to infer social contacts and vector potential.

BACKGROUND: Studies of host-parasite interactions have the potential to provide insights into the ecology of both organisms involved. We monitored the movement of sucking lice (Lemurpediculus verruculosus), parasites that require direct host-host contact to be transferred, in their host population of wild mouse lemurs (Microcebus rufus). These lemurs live in the rainforests of Madagascar, are small (40 g), arboreal, nocturnal, solitary foraging primates for which data on population-wide interactions are difficult to obtain. We developed a simple, cost effective method exploiting the intimate r

Co-phylogeography and morphological evolution of sika deer lice (Damalinia sika) with their hosts (Cervus nippon).

Lice are obligate parasites of mammals and birds and have become an important model for studies of host-parasite co-evolution and co-phylogenetics. Population genetic and phylogeographic studies represent an important bridge between microevolution and co-phylogenetic patterns. We examine co-phylogeographic patterns in sika deer and their parasitic lice. Co-phylogeographic patterns in deer and lice were evaluated using homologous regions of mitochondrial COI sequences. The phylogeographic breaks recovered for deer populations matched those of previous studies. Comparisons of the phylogeographic

Outcomes of the California ban on pharmaceutical lindane: clinical and ecologic impacts.

INTRODUCTION: There are increasing concerns over the presence and implications of pharmaceutical agents in water. In 2002, California banned pharmaceutical use of lindane because of concerns about water quality, as lindane treatment for head lice and scabies was found to be a significant factor adversely affecting wastewater quality. OBJECTIVES: In this article we describe the effects the ban has had on wastewater quality, unintentional exposures, and clinical practice. This is the first time that a pharmaceutical has been outlawed to protect water quality. As such, this ban provides a rare o

An immunohistochemical assessment of the cutaneous immune response to louse infestation in cattle.

Skin samples were taken from 10 experimental cattle exposed naturally, during a period extending over two winters, to Bovicola bovis and Solenoptes capillatus, five becoming infested and five being protected from infestation by repeated treatment with ectoparasiticides. Skin sections were examined histopathologically and immunohistochemically for expression of the immune cell markers CD3, CD4, CD8 and class II antigens of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). Louse-infested cattle had a mixed infiltration of the superficial dermis and perifollicular regions with eosinophils and mononucle

Four cases of pediculosis caused by Pthirus pubis Linnaeus, 1758 (Diptera: Anoplura) from peninsular Malaysia.

Four cases of pediculosis, two in adults and two in children, caused by the crab-louse, Pthirus pubis Linnaeus, 1758 (Diptera: Anoplura) is reported from peninsular Malaysia. This is the second report of the problem to be documented from the country. Although P. pubis is closely associated with genital hairs, it is, however, also found to occur on the eyelashes, eyebrows, hairs of the body, head and axilla. The few reported cases of pthiriasis probably do not reflect the true situation.

Comparison of two partial least squares infrared spectrometric methods for the quality control of pediculosis lotions.

Two vibrational spectroscopy procedures have been developed and compared for the direct and simultaneous determination of piperonyl butoxide and tetramethrin, the active ingredients of alcoholic capillary lotions, for hair pediculosis diseases. Nine lotions, purchased from the Spanish market, were analyzed using both, attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and transmission FT-IR measurements, and based on the use of partial least squares (PLS) multivariate calibration. A reduced set of 15 matched standards (11 for calibration and 4 for validation) was employed using both measurement modes. The spe

The knowledge of healthcare professionals with regard to the treatment and prevention of head lice.

This study examined the knowledge and practice of healthcare professionals regarding the prevention and treatment of head lice 18 months after dissemination of local guidelines. A self-administered postal questionnaire was sent to all primary healthcare professionals (general practitioners and practice nurses), community healthcare professionals (community paediatricians, health visitors and school nurses) and pharmacists in South Staffordshire health district, UK. The overall response rate was 48% (range 24-63%). Compared to other groups: community healthcare professionals were more likely to

Interventions for treating headlice.

BACKGROUND: Infection with head lice is a widespread condition in developed and developing countries. Infection occurs most commonly in children, but also affects adults. If left untreated the condition can become intensely irritating and skin infections may occur if the bites are scratched. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to assess the effects of interventions for head lice. SEARCH STRATEGY: Trials register of The Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group; Medline; Embase; Science Citation Index; Biosis and Toxline; reference lists of relevant articles; pharmaceutical companies producing pe

Abnormal distribution of the histocompatibility antigens (HLA) in lousy patients.

The histocompatibility antigens have important functions in the development of the immune response, in the development of immunologic tolerance and in the resistance and susceptibility to diseases. In the present study, the frequency of the human leucocytic antigens (HLA) were studied in 31 lousy children with Pediculus h. capitis (head lice) and 14 adults with Phthirus pubis (pubic lice) to evaluate the immune response in their pathogenesis. The patients (children and adults) were parasite-free as indicated by urine, stool and blood analysis and clinical examination. A significant increase wa

Comparison of local and systemic responsiveness of lymphocytes in vitro to Bovicola ovis antigen and concanavalin A in B. ovis-infested and naive lambs.

The in vitro proliferation assay was used to determine lymphocyte responsiveness to soluble antigen of B. ovis and to Concanavalin A (Con A) in peripheral blood, spleen and various lymph nodes from B. ovis-infested and naive lambs. From March to July, an assay of monthly blood samples showed generally higher proliferative responses to antigen and Con A in B. ovis-infested than naive lambs. The proliferative response of cells from the skin-draining prescapular lymph nodes to B. ovis antigen was significantly higher in B. ovis-infested than naive lambs. Responses of cells from the medial iliac,

The head louse in Sierra Leone: an epidemiological study among school children, in the Njala area.

A survey of five primary schools in the Njala area, Sierra Leone showed that Pediculus humanus capitis infestation is wide-spread. The overall prevalence was 6.8% among 1007 school children examined. Infestation rates varied between schools from 1.4% to 14.6% and the prevalence of infestation increased with age, from 3.1% among class I children to 10.2% among class IV and decreased to 4.9% among class VI children. Females had a higher infestation rate (8.3%) than their male counterparts (5.4%). The infestation rate was higher' in children whose fathers were Farmers (9.4%) followed by Traders (

Comparison of phenothrin shampoo and malathion lotion in the treatment of head louse infection.

Eighty patients (age range 4-10 years) with head lice infection were recruited to the study. Forty patients were treated with a single application of 0.2% w/v phenothrin liquid shampoo and 40 with 0.2% w/v malathion lotion. Inspection of the patients one week later revealed that no live lice remained in either group, but that two patients had viable eggs in the malathion lotion group. Re-inspection four weeks after application revealed that five patients of the phenothrin shampoo group and seven of the malathion lotion group had viable eggs. Live lice were not seen to be present in either trea
