Mystacocarida is a species-poor group of minute crustaceans with unclear phylogenetic affinities. Previous studies have highlighted the putative "primitiveness" of several mystacocarid features, including the architecture of the nervous system. Recent studies on arthropod neuroarchitecture have provided a wealth of characters valuable for phylogenetic reconstructions. To permit and facilitate comparison with these data, we used immunohistochemical labeling (against acetylated alpha-tubulin, serotonin and FMRFamide) on the mystacocarid Derocheilocaris remanei, analyzing it with confocal laser-s

UNLABELLED: Paralysis of the facial nerve reveales some symptoms which are very unfavourable for esthetic point of view (deformity of the face with incompetence of the palpebal function). It is recognized as the one of the most invalidity for humane life. There are many surgical techniques to reconstructive facial nerve such as: decompression, end to end or side to end anastomosis with hypoglosal, glosopharyngeal, axesorius or mandibular nerves. Reconstruction technique depends upon the extent of injury, the availability of the proximal stump and time since injury and duration of muscle denerv

The purpose of this study was to design a better craniofacial classification system for bony deformities in patients with hemifacial microsomia than the existing ones. It was meant to incorporate the deformity of the craniofacial skeleton other than that of the mandible. The "Mandibular Deformity Scoring" System (MDS), the "Cranial Deformity Scoring" System (CDS), the the "Craniofacial Deformity Scoring" System (CFDS) are three newly developed classification systems, which are based on three-dimensional computed tomography (3-D CT) reconstructions. The size and shape of the craniofacial struct

A need exists for well-defined animal models to objectively evaluate surgical principles and a possible role for biochemical wound conditioning and biomaterials in promoting periodontal regeneration. To test an existing model for its usefulness in quantitative evaluation of periodontal wound healing, large supraalveolar periodontal defects were surgically created around the mandibular premolars (P2, P3, P4) in left or right jaw quadrants in 5 beagle dogs. The defects were exposed to the oral environment for 6 months and were then subjected to reconstructive flap surgery (chronic defects). Heal

BACKGROUND: Recent studies reported on the very complex morphology of the pulp system in equine cheek teeth. The continuous production of secondary dentine leads to distinct age-related changes of the endodontic cavity. Detailed anatomical knowledge of the dental cavities in all ages is required to explain the aetiopathology of typical equine endodontic diseases. Furthermore, data on mandibular and maxillary pulp systems is in high demand to provide a basis for the development of endodontic therapies. However, until now examination of the pulp cavity has been based on either sectioned teeth or

Endodontic microsurgery (EMS) is a specific treatment modality that targets the root apex of infected teeth that have not been healed by traditional root canal treatments. Recently, the use of advanced three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction technology, such as cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), has improved diagnosis and treatment in dentistry. However, locating the root apex accurately using this technology can be challenging. Also, traditional surgical methods often require significant bone removal which usually results in prolonged surgery and increased risk of trauma and infection. This

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a rare malignant tumor originating from follicular dendritic cells. We present the first report of such a sarcoma of the palatine tonsils that developed as a radiation-induced sarcoma. A 78-year-old man, who had undergone chemoradiotherapy for hypopharyngeal and esophageal cancer 7 years prior, presented with discomfort during swallowing. Endoscopic pharyngeal examination revealed a tumor in the right palatine tonsil which was histopathologically diagnosed as a follicular dendritic cell sarcoma. The tumor also met the diagnostic criteria for radiation-induc

The study compared the soft-tissue response to hard-tissue movement among different Class III vertical facial types after orthognathic surgery (OGS). The study included 90 consecutive adult patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent two-jaw OGS. Patients were divided into three groups (high, medium, and low angle) based on the presurgical Frankfort-mandibular plane angle. Cone-beam computerized tomographs were taken before surgery and after debonding. Soft- and hard-tissue linear and angular measurements were performed using three-dimensional reconstruction images. The retromandibular transparotid approach enables the most direct access to the central and posterior part of the mandibular ramus including the condylar region. So far it has not been widely used for the management of benign pathology of the mandible. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utilization rate of this approach in the nontrauma setting including the determination of suitable indications for this access. In total, 105 patients with 107 retromandibular transparotid approaches performed in the 6.5 years (from May 2014 to November 2020) were evaluated. Patients suffering from n

BACKGROUND: Correlation between malocclusions and body posture has been discussed in the last decades, but there is still a lack of consensus in existing literature. Rasterstereography allows tridimensional reconstruction of the spine, starting from the back surface analysis. So far studies which tested modifications of rasterstereographic parameters during orthodontic treatment, comparing with those obtained from untreated control group, are not available. Clear aligner treatment produces alteration of vertical height due to the occlusal coverage and, subsequently, a stimulation of periodonta

This study aimed to establish the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in facial fracture patients. The specific aim was to investigate the effect of perioperative dexamethasone on PONV. A total of 119 adult patients with facial fractures were analysed in this prospective study. Patients were randomized to receive perioperatively either a total dose of 30mg of dexamethasone i.v. and i.m., or no glucocorticoid (control). PONV was evaluated every 6hours during the first postoperative 24hours and when pain medications were given. PONV occurred in 20 out of 119 patients (16.8%). T

Osteosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor whose cancerous cells produce osteoid matrix. It is the most common primary malignant bone tumor, accounting for approximately 20% of the sarcomas, but only 5% of the osteosarcomas occur in the jaws. They present various clinical and histological aspects, as well as variable disease progression and outcome. This article shows a case report of a 20-year-old woman who presented swelling near the mandibular left premolar. After clinical diagnosis of lesion of the dental periapex, the patient initially underwent endodontic treatment of the tooth involv
