Transcriptional signatures and topological reorganization of morphometric similarity networks in temporal lobe epilepsy with unilateral hippocampal sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: To delineate morphometric similarity network (MSN) topological abnormalities and their underlying spatial transcriptomics in the normal-appearing cortex of unilateral mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (mTLE-HS). METHODS: High-resolution T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from 109 unilateral mTLE-HS patients (64 left, 45 right) and 90 matched controls were analyzed to construct individual-level MSNs by integrating five cortical morphometric features. Graph-theoretical analysis quantified global and local network topology, and machine-learning models

Aberrant resting-state co-activation network dynamics in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a globally prevalent and highly disabling disease characterized by dysfunction of large-scale brain networks. Previous studies have found that static functional connectivity is not sufficient to reflect the complicated and time-varying properties of the brain. The underlying dynamic interactions between brain functional networks of MDD remain largely unknown, and it is also unclear whether neuroimaging-based dynamic properties are sufficiently robust to discriminate individuals with MDD from healthy controls since the diagnosis of MDD mainly depends on sympto

Electronic Nose Development and Preliminary Human Breath Testing for Rapid, Non-Invasive COVID-19 Detection.

We adapted an existing, spaceflight-proven, robust "electronic nose" (E-Nose) that uses an array of electrical resistivity-based nanosensors mimicking aspects of mammalian olfaction to conduct on-site, rapid screening for COVID-19 infection by measuring the pattern of sensor responses to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled human breath. We built and tested multiple copies of a hand-held prototype E-Nose sensor system, composed of 64 chemically sensitive nanomaterial sensing elements tailored to COVID-19 VOC detection; data acquisition electronics; a smart tablet with software (App) fo

Using Intratumor Heterogeneity of Immunohistochemistry Biomarkers to Classify Laryngeal and Hypopharyngeal Tumors Based on Histologic Features.

Haralick texture features are used to quantify the spatial distribution of signal intensities within an image. In this study, the heterogeneity of proliferation (Ki-67 expression) and immune cells (CD45 expression) within tumors was quantified and used to classify histologic characteristics of larynx and hypopharynx carcinomas. Of 21 laryngectomy specimens, 74 whole-mount tumor slides were scored on histologic characteristics. Ki-67 and CD45 immunohistochemistry was performed, and all sections were digitized. The tumor area was annotated in QuPath. Haralick features independent of the diaminob

Deep Learning Classification for Diabetic Foot Thermograms.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world. It is also associated with a high mortality index. Diabetic foot is one of its main complications, and it comprises the development of plantar ulcers that could result in an amputation. Several works report that thermography is useful to detect changes in the plantar temperature, which could give rise to a higher risk of ulceration. However, the plantar temperature distribution does not follow a particular pattern in diabetic patients, thereby making it difficult to meas

[Close-to-win evaluations are affected by the outcome and delay between stopping the wheels in slot machines].

INTRODUCTION: Distinct structural characteristics of gambling may affect the development of gambling addiction differently. The current study is dealing with the frequency of near-miss outcomes which works like secondary reinforcement and thus may contribute to gambling addiction. Authors of this paper argue that different near miss configurations should specifically alter the experiences of the player and this phenomenon can be proved experimentally Methods: Participants played with a computer-simulated slot machine. They had to evaluate how close they felt to winning in a given round. Evalua

Effects of combined wrist deviation and forearm rotation on discomfort score.

The aim of the study was to examine the pattern of the change in discomfort for combined wrist deviation and forearm rotation as joint angles increased away from neutral in a repetitive task. There were five levels of wrist deviation (neutral, 35% and 55% of the range of motion (ROM) in radial and ulnar deviation) and five levels of forearm rotation (neutral, 30% and 60% of the ROM in pronation and supination). Twenty-five participants performed a repetitive flexion task with a force of 10 N +/- 1 N at a frequency of 15 exertions per min, with replication after 1 week for six of the participan

Immunogenic cell death biomarkers for sepsis diagnosis and mechanism via integrated bioinformatics.

Immunogenic cell death (ICD) has been implicated in sepsis, a condition with high mortality, through mechanisms involving endoplasmic reticulum stress and other pathophysiological pathways. This study aimed to identify and validate ICD-related biomarkers for sepsis diagnosis and to elucidate their underlying mechanisms. Publicly available datasets (GSE65682, GSE95233 and GSE69528) and 57 ICD-related genes (ICDRGs) were collected for analysis. Candidate genes were selected using differential expression analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). By integrating machine lea

Advanced neuroimaging for central nervous system infections: when, where, how, and why?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Central nervous system (CNS) infections remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in children, older adults, and immunocompromised patients. Timely recognition and classification of CNS infections are critical, yet early clinical and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings are often non-specific. This review discusses when advanced neuroimaging adds value beyond conventional neuroimaging, where specific techniques are most useful, and how they can be integrated into pragmatic diagnostic pathways. RECENT FINDINGS: Multiplanar magnetic resonance imagi

Structured environmental cues and youth sports consumption: an AI-powered behavioral modeling approach.

INTRODUCTION: Physical inactivity among children and adolescents represents a critical global public health challenge, imposing an annual economic burden exceeding $27 billion on healthcare systems worldwide. Despite this pressing concern, the complex, cross-level relationships between structured environmental cues-spanning household, school, and community domains-and youth sports consumption remain inadequately understood, particularly across the heterogeneous urbanrural continuum characteristic of rapidly developing economies. METHODS: This study employed a longitudinal survey (China Health

Association of red blood cell distribution width combined with alanine aminotransferase with gastrointestinal hemorrhage in patients with acute pancreatitis: a retrospective MIMIC-IV study.

BACKGROUND: Readmission is common in acute pancreatitis (AP), with a rate of about 20%. Acute kidney injury (AKI), shock, and gastrointestinal (GI) hemorrhage are serious complications related to adverse outcomes in AP. This study aimed to identify the complication most strongly associated with readmission in AP for further risk factor analysis. METHODS: Data were downloaded from the MIMIC-IV database. Chi-square test and the Phi coefficient were used to explore which complication was most strongly associated with readmission in AP. Then, patients were divided into with/without GI hemorrhage

Single-cell and bulk transcriptomic profiling of M2-like tumor-associated macrophages reveals a prognostic signature and an inflammation-metabolism crosstalk program in multiple myeloma.

BACKGROUND: M2-like tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) contribute to multiple myeloma (MM) progression and treatment resistance, yet their internal heterogeneity remains poorly understood. We used single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) with bulk transcriptomic cohorts to resolve MM-specific M2-TAM subpopulations and develop a prognostic signature. METHODS: scRNA-seq data from MM and normal bone marrow (GSE124310, GSE278230) were processed after quality filtering and Harmony batch correction. M2 macrophages were sub-clustered; MM-restricted subclusters (MM-M2) were identified by Ro/e analysis

Global burden of subarachnoid hemorrhage in young adults, 1990-2021: disparities, risk factors, and projections to 2050.

BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) disproportionately affects young adults aged 15-49 years, yet prior global studies have rarely focused on this population and may obscure age-specific patterns by combining all-age data. We therefore quantified the global burden of SAH in young adults and explored disparities by sex and socio-demographic index (SDI) level. METHODS: Using Global Burden of Disease 2021 data from 204 countries (1990-2021), we estimated the age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR), age-standardized prevalence rates, age-standardized death rates, and age-standardized disabi

Evaluating Risk Factors Associating With Late Recurrence After Low-Dose-Rate Brachytherapy for Prostate Cancer Using Machine Learning.

BACKGROUND: The Phoenix definition is widely used to define biochemical recurrence (BCR) after radiation therapy for prostate cancer; however, a definitive definition of cure remains unclear. This study aimed to identify factors associated with late BCR after low-dose-rate brachytherapy (LDR-BT), defined as BCR occurring ≥ 5 years after treatment among patients who remained recurrence-free during the first 5 years, using machine-learning methods. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 1419 patients who underwent LDR-BT between 2004 and 2019. Of these, 52 (3.7%) experienced BCR within 5 years, a
