[The dental assessment of the patient waiting for a liver transplant].

Until the last several years liver transplantation was considered an experimental treatment procedure. Nowadays virtually any disease process, that is in terminal stage, is treatable with transplantation. The introduction of cyclosporine in 1980 and the recent use of OKT3 monoclonal antibody now allows a 5-year survival rate of 60-70%. The causes of early death of patients who survive after surgery are infective complications, multiorgan failure and acute rejection of the allograft. In the literature and in our experience, bacterial sepsis is the most common cause of deaths occurring during th

Effect of the socket shield technique on alveolar ridge dimensional changes in sites with thin buccal bone phenotype: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Post-extraction alveolar ridge remodeling is a major challenge for implant therapy, particularly in sites with a thin buccal bone phenotype. Although immediate implant placement has been proposed to limit ridge resorption, buccal dimensional changes remain frequent. The socket shield technique has been proposed to preserve the periodontal ligament-bundle bone complex and reduce post-extraction bone loss. This randomized clinical trial aimed to compare alveolar ridge dimensional changes following the socket shield technique versus immediate implant placement in sites with buccal bon

RNA interference-mediated silencing of Atp6i prevents both periapical bone erosion and inflammation in the mouse model of endodontic disease.

Dental caries is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases in the United States, affecting approximately 80% of children and the majority of adults. Dental caries may lead to endodontic disease, where the bacterial infection progresses to the root canal system of the tooth, leading to periapical inflammation, bone erosion, severe pain, and tooth loss. Periapical inflammation may also exacerbate inflammation in other parts of the body. Although conventional clinical therapies for this disease are successful in approximately 80% of cases, there is still an urgent need for increased efficacy

Antibacterial efficacy of chlorhexidine gluconate intracanal medication in vivo.

The antibacterial efficacy of intracanal medication with 2% chlorhexidine liquid (CHX) was assessed in teeth with apical periodontitis. Canals in 22 teeth were instrumented at the first session, medicated with CHX, and reaccessed after 7 to 15 days. Bacteriological samples were aspirated at the first and second sessions, before (1A, 2A) and after (1B, 2B) canal instrumentation. Viable bacterial counts were obtained by culture (CFU) and microscopy using vital dyes. Microscopic counts were higher than CFU counts. Consistently high CFU counts in 1A samples (mean, 2 x 10(5) microL(-1) canal volume

Endodontic infections: concepts, paradigms, and perspectives.

Overwhelming evidence indicates that periradicular diseases are infectious disorders. The question now is no longer whether microorganisms are involved in the pathogenesis of such diseases, but which specific microbial species are. The list of microorganisms involved in periradicular diseases keeps expanding and has the potential to become increasingly more accurate during the next few years. Molecular methods have contributed significantly to the knowledge about the microbial species involved. Undoubtedly, a great deal of additional research is needed to define the specific role played by sus

Genome-wide association study of pulpal and apical diseases.

Infections of the dental pulp are common sequelae of microbial activity and host susceptibility, affecting >80% of adult population. We performed a genome-wide association study on endodontic infections utilizing Finnish health registry and genotype data from FinnGen. Cases [132,124 (27.2%)] had at least one ICD10-diagnosis code of pulpal or apical diseases, whereas 353,106 individuals without diagnoses served as controls. We investigated two clinical sub-phenotypes, Pulpitis and Necrosis of pulp or apical periodontitis. Our analysis resulted in significant associations in 12 chromosomes and 1
