Technology for Repairing Osteomyelitic Bone Defects Using Autologous Mesenchymal Stromal Cells on a Collagen Matrix in Experiment.

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to develop a technology for repairing an osteomyelitic bone defect using autologous adipose tissue mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) bound to a collagen matrix and to test the efficacy of this technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was carried out with 17 rabbits. A bone defect was created using a milling cutter applied to the proximal third of the leg. The wound (8.0×4.0 mm and a depth of 4.0 mm) involved the periosteum, cortical layer, and cancellous substance. Staphylococcus aureus strain was used as an infectious agent. After the development of chro…

A new sequential animal model for infection-related non-unions with segmental bone defect.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of fracture-related infections (FRI) is still a challenge for orthopedic surgeons. The prevalence of FRI is partic … rats underwent a transverse osteotomy of the mid-shaft femur with a 5 mm defect. Additionally, the periosteum at the fracture zone was cauterized at both sides. After intramedullary inoculation with 103 CFU Staphylococcus aureus (infected group) or PBS (non-infected group), a fracture stabilization was done by intramedullary K-wires. After 5 weeks, the bone …

[Clinical analysis of orbital ectopic meningiomas].

Objective: To investigate the clinical features, imaging features, diagnoses and therapeutic regimens of orbital ectopic meningiomas. Method … it was confirmed intraoperatively that the tumors were not adjacent to the optic nerve and orbital periosteum. The pathological diagnoses were mostly epithelial meningiomas (9 cases). There were no significant changes in visual acuity, but temporary eye movement disorders occurred postoperatively (10 cases). The patients were followed for 6 months to 6 year …

Development of synthetic simulators for endoscope-assisted repair of metopic and sagittal craniosynostosis.

OBJECTIVE Endoscope-assisted repair of craniosynostosis is a safe and efficacious alternative to open techniques. However, this procedure is … an infant's head. Each cartridge consists of a multilayer scalp (skin, subcutaneous fat, galea, and periosteum); cranial bones with accurate landmarks; and the dura mater. Data related to model construction, use, and cost were collected. Eleven novice surgeons (residents), 9 experienced surgeons (fellows), and 5 expert surgeons (attendings) performed a simul …

Inhibition of microRNA-222 expression accelerates bone healing with enhancement of osteogenesis, chondrogenesis, and angiogenesis in a rat refractory fracture model.

BACKGROUND: It is difficult to achieve bone union in case of non-union with non-invasive techniques. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, non-codin … chondrogenic differentiation in hMSCs. A femoral transverse fracture was completed in rats, and the periosteum at the fracture site was cauterized. Then, either an miR-222 inhibitor or an miR-222 mimics, mixed with atelocollagen, was administered into the fracture site. A non-functional inhibitor negative control was administered to the control group. At 2, …

The Role of Ultrasound Imaging of Callus Formation in the Treatment of Long Bone Fractures in Children.

BACKGROUND: In the process of diagnosis and treatment of fractures, an X-ray study is typically performed. In modern medicine very important … y results showed a significantly higher degree of vascularization of the callus than of the healthy periosteum. CONCLUSIONS: Preliminary results indicate the high efficacy of ultrasound in the evaluation of callus formation after fractures of long bones in children and the possibility of its alternative use to X-ray examinations.

Enthesitis: an autoinflammatory lesion linking nail and joint involvement in psoriatic disease.

The traditional model for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is that autoimmunity directed against a common skin and joint autoantigen … il. Other anchorage mechanisms include fibres that directly tether the nail plate to the underlying periosteum, which itself is closely anchored to the extension tendon. The frequent microdamage and tissue repair at normal enthesis attachment sites in healthy joints has resulted in a proposed new model of PsA pathogenesis embracing the concept of autoinflamm …

Development of the innervation of long bones: expression of the growth-associated protein 43.

It has been known from clinical and experimental observations that the peripheral nervous system is involved in the development of long bone … in the close vicinity of bone rudiments. On GD19 GAP-43-IR fibers were scarcely present within the periosteum of the central portion of the diaphysis. In the perichondrium surrounding the proximal epiphysis, nerve fibers were first detected around birth. From PD1 onward, numerous fibers were seen in the fibrous buds of the perichondrium at the epi-metaphyse …

[Nevus of Ota. Presentation of a case associated with a cellular blue nevus with suspected malignant degeneration and review of the literature].

BACKGROUND: Nevus of Ota is a melanotic pigmentary disorder ("dermal melanocytosis"), mostly congenital or acquired, involving the skin innervated by the first and the second branch of the trigeminal nerve, hence its descriptive label of "nevus fuscus coerulaeus ophthalmic and maxillaris". In more than half of patients this condition is associated with "ocular melanocytosis" ("melanosis oculi") involving the conjunctiva, the sclera, the uveal tract and possibly the optic nerve. In some cases a condition of "orbital melanocytosis" with involvement of orbital fat and periosteum by dendritic mela…

The periosteum, synovial tissues, the joint capsule and the intra-articular fat tissues were richly innervated. Characteristics and mechanism of lower limb injury induced by landmine blast: A research in a rabbit model.

Sneak wound track, myofascial destruction, and periosteum stripping were typical characteristics of landmine blast injury. The transperiosteal "inside-out" occipital artery harvesting technique.

OBJECTIVE The occipital artery (OA) is a frequently used donor vessel for posterior circulation bypass procedures due to its proximity to th … easy technique. It requires only superficial dissection because the OA is found directly under the periosteum throughout its course, obviating tedious layer-by-layer muscle dissection. This approach avoids critical neurovascular structures like the vertebral artery. The key landmarks needed to localize the OA using this technique include the OMS, OG, DM and …

In this study, we used … usly for 8 h, and killed 24 h later along with the control groups. Long bones free of soft tissues (periosteum, endosteum and bone marrow), as well as muscles of posterior limbs, were processed and analyzed for proteins differentially expressed or phosphorylated between the two sample groups. The tibia was exposed, with detachment of the periosteum. The radiograph revealed a tibial shaft fracture. Biologic characteristics of fibrous hamartoma from congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia associated with neurofibromatosis type 1.

BACKGROUND: Fibrous hamartoma is a key pathologic component of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia, a challenging and disabling bone disorder. We investigated the biologic characteristics of fibrous hamartoma cells in order to better understand the pathogenesis of this rare disease. METHODS: Fibrous hamartoma tissues were surgically excised at the time of osteosynthesis from seven patients with congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia associated with neurofibromatosis type 1. Distal tibial periosteum was also harvested as control tissue during tibial derotation osteotomy from two other patie…
