BACKGROUND: High rates of postpartum relapse occur in women with histories of bipolar or schizoaffective disorder. These relapses may be triggered by the postdelivery fall in circulating estrogen through alteration of central neurotransmitter (especially dopaminergic) systems. This study tested the hypothesis that estrogen administration after childbirth would prevent postpartum relapse and would alter dopamine receptor sensitivity.
METHOD: Twenty-nine pregnant women with a Research Diagnostic Criteria diagnosis of hypomania (bipolar II), mania (bipolar I), or schizoaffective disorder partici

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) affects approximately 21% to 26% of women in the postpartum period. This study aimed to determine the incidence and identify risk factors of SUI, and more importantly, to establish a predictive model for SUI.
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in our hospital. We gathered clinical information, pelvic floor muscle strength measurements, Glazer scores, and transperineal ultrasound (TPUS) data from participants between 6 and 8 weeks postpartum. At the 1-year postpartum mark, we conducted follow-ups to assess the incidence of

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Studies concerning the similarities and differences in relevant factors for PPUI in puerpera with delivery modes are scarce. This study aimed to investigate relevant factors for PPUI among primiparas grouped by different delivery modes using transperineal ultrasonography.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. Seven hundred thirty-eight primiparas were included and their clinical and ultrasonographic data were collected. First, they were divided into the UI group (n = 233) and non-UI group (n = 505). Then all participants were redivided into the vaginal de

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: We have examined prospectively a large cohort of primipara with VA deliveries and previously reported that approximately one in five had an anal sphincter injury of which one quarter were clinically unrecognized. In this paper, we examine the development and potential predictors of postpartum anal incontinence (AI) in the cohort. We hypothesized that both clinically recognized and unrecognized anal sphincter injuries would be associated with AI development.
METHODS: The participants were interviewed 9-12 months postpartum using the St. Marks incontinence score (SM

BACKGROUND: Bleeding is a serious cause of hypotension and tachycardia after childbirth and should always be considered.
CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy woman in her thirties who had previously undergone caesarean section, underwent induction and operative vaginal delivery. Postpartum, she experienced chest pain, hypotension and tachycardia, and had signs of ischaemia on electrocardiogram. A CT scan showed a large intraperitoneal haematoma. The patient underwent immediate laparotomy and received a massive blood transfusion. However, no large haematoma was found. The chest pain was attributed to

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Postpartum urinary incontinence (UI) is common and a concern for many women, as UI leads to a lower quality of life and self-esteem. Perineal tears may be a risk factor for UI, yet few studies have investigated the association between the degree of perineal tear and risk of developing UI postpartum. The objective was to examine how the degree of perineal tear and selected obstetric risk factors were associated with any UI and stress ultrasound (SUI) 12 months postpartum among primiparous women.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted at four Danish hospi

OBJECTIVE: Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) is associated with a higher risk of aortic dissections (ADs) during pregnancy and postpartum. However, there is limited evidence about the perinatal management of LDS patients who have undergone prophylactic aortic root replacements (ARRs) before conception.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 28-year-old nulliparous pregnant woman with LDS with a pathogenic variant within exon 5 of TGFBR2 (c.1379G > T, p.[Arg460Leu]), who underwent an ARR at 20 years of age. Cardiac echocardiography did not show any significant changes in the aorta during pregnancy, an

BACKGROUND: The consumption of bear gallbladders and bear bile in Southeast Asia is a persistent threat to bear populations. As part of a larger effort to understand the characteristics of bear part consumption in Cambodia, we uncovered a consumer base of women seeking treatment for post-partum and uterine ailments.
METHODS: To better understand this aspect of consumption, we interviewed 122 women in seven different provinces in Cambodia, probing into the motivations and influences for using bear bile, as well as what types of ailments Cambodian women use it for.
RESULTS: We found that it is

OBJECTIVES: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare disease carrying a risk of death and chronic heart failure. It is unknown if women with PPCM have a family history of heart failure. We investigated the prevalence of heart failure and hypertension in first-degree relatives to women with PPCM.
METHODS: A cohort of 61 women with PPCM was identified through the nationwide Danish registers from 2005 to 2014, and each individual diagnosis of PPCM was validated through review of patient records. We excluded 13 women due to lack of data on relatives. In a case-control design, the 48 remaining wo

Postpartum thyroiditis (PPT) is an autoimmune-mediated destructive thyroiditis that occurs in the first year postpartum with a prevalence of 5%. In order to appropriately counsel and treat the patient, physicians need to recognize the signs and symptoms of PPT and distinguish PPT from Graves hyperthyroidism. This review of PPT will discuss the etiology, clinical course, risk factors, prognosis, and treatment of PPT. Understanding PPT is important for all physicians taking care of women in the peripartum period as women who have had PPT are at an increased risk of subsequent episodes of PP and
