The incidence of inclusion of the sigmoid colon and small bowel in the planning target volume in radiotherapy for prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In radiotherapy for prostate cancer, the rectum is considered the dose-limiting organ. The incidence of overlap between the sigmoid colon and/or small bowel and the planning target volume (PTV) as well as the dose to sigmoid colon and small bowel were investigated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The CT data of 75 prostate cancer patients were analyzed. The clinical target volume (CTV) consisted of prostate and seminal vesicles. The PTV was defined as a three-dimensional expansion of the CTV with a 10-mm margin in craniocaudal and a 7-mm margin in the other directions. All patie

Advanced transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) planning from CT with ShapeForest.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is becoming a standard treatment for non-operable and high-risk patients with symptomatic severe aortic valve stenosis. As there is no direct view or access to the affected anatomy, comprehensive preoperative planning is crucial for a successful outcome, with the most important decisions made during planning being the selection of the proper implant size, and determining the correct C-arm angulations. While geometric models extracted from 3D images are often used to derive these measurements, the complex shape variation of the AV anatomy found in

The diagnosis of Tourette's Syndrome: communication and impact.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Despite the increasing availability of ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), radiography remains the primary imaging modality for the assessment of feline musculoskeletal disease in practice. In many respects, having a more feline-focused approach to radiography will reward the clinician with better quality images and, hence, a greater likelihood of a correct diagnosis. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Correct interpretation of radiographic films requires familiarity with some of the unique aspects of normal feline skeletal anatomy. For optimal pa

In Vivo Strain Analysis of Dilated Ascending Thoracic Aorta by ECG-Gated CT Angiographic Imaging.

Accurate assessment of aortic extensibility is a requisite first step for elucidating the pathophysiology of an ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA). This study aimed to develop a framework for the in vivo evaluation of the full-field distribution of the aortic wall strain by imaging analysis of electrocardiographic- (ECG) gated thoracic data of 34 patients with ATAA. Seven healthy controls (i.e., non-aneurysmal aorta) from patients who underwent ECG-gated CT angiography for coronary artery diseases were included for comparison. To evaluate the systolic function, ECG-gated computed tomogr

Full-Mouth Rehabilitation with Bone-Level Implant Guide and Monolithic Zirconia Prosthesis for Fibular Free Flap Reconstruction: A Case History Report.

The fibular free flap (FFF) approach is the preferred option for reconstruction of segmental mandibular deficiencies. Fixed dental prostheses are recommended for patients who have undergone FFF jaw surgery to improve quality of life, but treatment of these patients with an implant-supported prosthesis is challenging because of the thin bone and thick soft tissue in the fibula. This case history reports the use of a bone-level implant guide fabricated with a computer-aided system and milled customized long abutments for implant placement and prosthodontic procedures. Advanced digital technologi

Morphologic changes of mammary carcinomas in mice over time as monitored by flat-panel detector volume computed tomography.

Noninvasive methods are strongly needed to detect and quantify not only tumor growth in murine tumor models but also the development of vascularization and necrosis within tumors. This study investigates the use of a new imaging technique, flat-panel detector volume computed tomography (fpVCT), to monitor in vivo tumor progression and structural changes within tumors of two murine carcinoma models. After tumor cell inoculation, single fpVCT scans of the entire mice were performed at different time points. The acquired isotropic, high-resolution volume data sets enable an accurate real-time ass

Automated Breast Density Assessment for Full-Field Digital Mammography and Digital Breast Tomosynthesis.

Mammographic density is a strong risk factor for breast cancer and is reported clinically as part of Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) results issued by radiologists. Automated assessment of density is needed that can be used for both full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) as both types of exams are acquired in standard clinical practice. We trained a deep learning model to automate the estimation of BI-RADS density from a prospective Washington University clinic-based cohort of 9,714 women, entering into the cohort in 2013 with follow-up
