[Ossification and calcification of the cervical ligamentum flavum--case reports].

Ossification of ligamentum flavum was reported usually lower thoracic and lumbar region, and rarely seen in the cervical region. Calcification of cervical ligamentum flavum is also relatively rare. We report a case of ossification and another of calcification of cervical ligamentum flavum, and discussed the difference of the clinical and radiological features in these conditions. Case 1: A 55-year-old man presented with numbness of the left shoulder and urinary dysfunction. Neurological examination revealed weakness, muscle atrophy and elevated deep tendon reflexes of the left extremities. CT

[Striatal involvement on MRI in adrenomyeloneuropathy].

Adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN), a clinical variant of child adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), is an adult-onset progressive disorder which presents spastic paraparesis with peripheral nerve involvement and affects mainly the pyramidal tracts from the brainstem to the spinal cord. We report a case of AMN in which serial MRI showed unusual development of areas of high signal in the right striatum. The patient was in good health until the age of 12, when he began to lose his hair. At age 25 he started to have progressive gait disturbance and erectile impotence. In his first admission to our hospital at ag

[An autopsy case of primary intracranial malignant lymphoma showing extracranial disseminations].

An autopsy case of malignant lymphoma of the central nervous system which showed extracranial disseminations was presented. A 50-year-old man developed mental and physical slowness over one year prior to admission followed by dementia and consciousness disturbance without general physical symptoms. Physical examination on admission showed no lymph node enlargement, hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, or abdominal mass. Neurological examination revealed mild dementia, left positive Babinski and Chaddock reflexes, and bilateral positive frontal lobe signs. CT scan revealed low density areas with contras

[Chronic demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy associated with malignant histiocytosis].

A case of malignant histiocytosis (MH) presenting with peripheral nerve involvement is described. A 67-year-old man initially noted left facial weakness on July 20, 1986. The symptom was improved within a week, however, two weeks later he noticed numbness in his fingers and a burning pain in his legs, which was followed by double vision and progressive weakness in all four limbs. On examination, he was found to have total ophthalmoparesis of the right eye and a trace of the left facial palsy. There was severe weakness of the leg muscles, as well as mild weakness of the arms. This was accompani

Tending The Garden: What organic youth peer support can teach us about building systems that care.

Youth peer support (YPS) is an evidence-based model of care in which young people with lived experience (YPWLE) provide recovery-oriented support to peers navigating similar challenges. On many college campuses this work already happens informally, without training, compensation, or institutional recognition. This narrative essay examines The Garden, a unit of a student mentor-mentee program at the University of California, San Diego, that organically evolved into de facto YPS, providing students mutual aid spanning acute crisis, identity formation, and navigation of the hidden curriculum of h

The influence of sensory function on walking stability in aging and falls through a head-movement perturbation model.

Age-related sensory decline impairs responses to balance disturbances, increasing fall risk. Evaluating gait and balance under sensory challenges can help reveal how this decline affects instability in older adults. This study (Clinicaltrials.gov NCT06345625) incorporates head movements to evaluate the effect of sensory function - cervical sensorimotor control, vestibular function, and visual acuity - on walking stability in aging and its relationship with falls through a novel augmented-reality perturbation model. Sixty-one healthy, community-dwelling older adults (76.2 years; 40 females) wit

Case Report: When metabolism meets malabsorption: Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome with coexisting propionic acidemia presenting as recurrent metabolic crises.

BACKGROUND: Propionic acidemia and Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome are rare inherited metabolic disorders with distinct pathophysiological mechanisms. Their occurrence in the same child is extremely unusual and can create diagnostic and therapeutic challenges because of overlapping neurological and hematological manifestations. CASE: A 1.5-year-old boy presented with recurrent episodes of encephalopathy precipitated by febrile illnesses, associated with vomiting, severe metabolic acidosis, ketosis, and refractory focal status epilepticus. Following repeated metabolic crises, developmental stagnat

Tuning in: A mixed methods study evaluating clinician perceptions of measurement-based care training and their association with posttraining skills use.

Understanding clinician perspectives and preferences is critical to advancing measurement-based care (MBC) training and implementation efforts. Yet, clinician perceptions of these and how they relate to MBC uptake are understudied. This mixed methods study aimed to evaluate clinicians' MBC training perceptions, posttraining MBC use, and predictors of MBC uptake. Clinicians in Department of Defense settings completed surveys immediately (N = 366) and 1 month (n = 88) posttraining. Most viewed MBC training as relevant (89.5%) and useful (81.8%); similarly, most were confident using symptom (87.9

'It Takes a Village': Sociocultural Insights From a Qualitative Study on Strategies for Member Engagement and Participation in SMART Recovery.

INTRODUCTION: SMART (self-management and recovery training) recovery is a mutual-help group that supports and sustains recovery from addiction, including substance use. Meetings are moderated by trained facilitators who manage group dynamics and guide members through a 4-point program. Nonetheless, sociocultural factors can influence group processes, shaping facilitation style and delivery of SMART Recovery. Our study explored facilitation strategies used in Singapore to foster member engagement and retention. METHODS: In-depth qualitative interviews with 18 participants (14 members and four

'Making it up as we go': Midwives' perceptions of preparedness and role clarity in surrogacy birth care.

BACKGROUND: Surrogacy poses unique clinical, psychosocial, and organisational challenges. Midwives, often with limited experience, education, and guidance, may feel uncertain about providing appropriate care, potentially affecting the quality of care and experiences of surrogates, intended parents, and newborns. OBJECTIVE: This study explored how midwives navigate surrogacy birth care, with a focus on role clarity, involvement of intended parents, and preparedness across the intrapartum and postnatal continuum. METHOD: An interpretative phenomenological design was adopted. Five midwives with

Vestibular System and Hearing Involvement in Patients with Turner Syndrome.

Background: Turner syndrome is a genotypic disorder in females characterized by the total or partial absence of an X chromosome. While cardiovascular issues and sensorineural hearing loss are well-documented, vestibular system involvement remains understudied. This study aims to examine vestibular system involvement in patients with Turner syndrome and assess if they exhibit a higher prevalence of peripheral vestibular pathology compared to the general population. Methods: A retrospective longitudinal study was conducted with 21 Turner syndrome patients and 21 age-matched controls. Evaluations

Children's narratives of violence: Qualitative findings from a violence study with young children in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Research on violence against children in Africa often relies on adult's qualitative accounts or on quantitative surveys that focus mainly on sexual abuse or on adverse childhood exposures. We seldom hear how young children describe their experiences and their perceptions of violence. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe children's personal experiences and perceptions of violence. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study was conducted from 2022 to 2023 in peri-urban and rural Mpumalanga, South Africa with 23 children aged between 6 and 12 years who, together with their primary careg

Indonesian psychologists' sensemaking and reported intervention practices in working with women survivors of sexual assault with PTSD symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Sexual assault is a significant public health and human rights concern in Indonesia and is associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among women survivors. Limited evidence exists on how Indonesian psychologists understand, organise, and adapt psychological interventions for these survivors within complex sociocultural, legal, and institutional contexts. This study explored Indonesian psychologists' sensemaking and reported intervention practices when working with women survivors of sexual assault who present with PTSD symptoms. METHOD: Twenty-one licensed psy

Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies with recurrent facial paralysis as main clinical manifestation in a Chinese patient: A case report.

RATIONALE: Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by recurrent, brief, and painless nerve paralysis after mild compression. Common peroneal nerve, ulnar nerve, and median nerve are most often involved, but cranial nerve involvement is rare. However, we found a case of HNPP with recurrent facial paralysis as main clinical manifestation. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 31-year-old male experienced 3 episodes of left peripheral facial paralysis over the past 4 years. After hospitalization, we found that the patient had weak

Post-traumatic cerebral myiasis: the first case report in Ghana and implications for neurotrauma care in low-resource settings.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Cerebral myiasis is a rare neurosurgical condition with only 21 cases reported globally. Post-traumatic forms are common in low- to middle-income countries, often arising from neglected wounds. We report the first documented case in Ghana, highlighting systemic barriers to timely neurotrauma care. CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old boy sustained an open comminuted skull fracture as an unhelmeted pillion rider in a tricycle collision. After a 3-day delay in wound care at a peripheral facility, he presented with a foul-smelling, sand-contaminated wound. Neurologic asse

Vestibulo-ocular reflex dynamics with head-impulses discriminates Usher patients type 1 and 2.

Usher Syndrome classification takes into account the absence of vestibular function but its correlation with genotype is not well characterized. We intend to investigate whether video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) is useful in screening and to differentiate Usher Syndrome types. 29 Usher patients (USH) with a genetically confirmed diagnosis and 30 healthy controls were studied with vHIT and dizziness handicap inventory questionnaire (DHI). Statistical significant differences between USH1, USH2 and controls were found in the vestibulo-ocular-reflex (VOR) gain of all SCCs, with USH1 patients consiste

Dexmedetomidine Improves Long-term Neurological Outcomes by Promoting Oligodendrocyte Genesis and Myelination in Neonatal Rats Following Hypoxic-ischemic Brain Injury.

Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI) can lead to white matter damage, which significantly contributes to cognitive dysfunction, emotional disorders, and sensorimotor impairments. Although dexmedetomidine enhances neurobehavioral outcomes, its impact on oligodendrocyte genesis and myelination following hypoxic-ischemic events, as well as the underlying mechanisms, remain poorly understood. Dexmedetomidine was administered 15 min post-HIBI. We assessed neurobehavioral deficits using various tests: surface righting, negative geotaxis, forelimb grip strength, cliff avoidance, sensory refl

Musicogenic epilepsy in paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis: a video-EEG case report.

Musicogenic epilepsy (ME), a peculiar form of reflex epilepsy, represents a neurological rarity and yet another demonstration of the extraordinary power of music on the human brain. Despite the heterogeneity of the reported musical triggers, the patients' emotional response to music is thought to play a crucial role in provoking seizures. Accordingly, the mesial temporal structures (especially of the non-dominant hemisphere) appear most involved in seizure generation, although a more complex fronto-temporal epileptogenic network was documented in some cases. Autoimmune encephalitis has been re
