Evaluation of multiple perceptual qualities of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation for evoked tactile sensation in forearm amputees.

Objective. Evoked tactile sensation (ETS) elicited by transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is promising to convey digit-specific sensory information to amputees naturally and non-invasively. Fitting ETS-based sensory feedback to amputees entails customizing coding of multiple sensory information for each stimulation site. This study was to elucidate the consistency of percepts and qualities by TENS at multiple stimulation sites in amputees retaining ETS.Approach. Five transradial amputees with ETS and fourteen able-bodied subjects participated in this study. Surface electrodes wi

SARS-CoV-2-related encephalitis with prominent parkinsonism: clinical and FDG-PET correlates in two patients.

Considering the similarities with other pandemics due to respiratory virus infections and subsequent development of neurological disorders (e.g. encephalitis lethargica after the 1918 influenza), there is growing concern about a possible new wave of neurological complications following the worldwide spread of SARS-CoV-2. However, data on COVID-19-related encephalitis and movement disorders are still limited. Herein, we describe the clinical and neuroimaging (FDG-PET/CT, MRI and DaT-SPECT) findings of two patients with COVID-19-related encephalopathy who developed prominent parkinsonism. None o

Sox10-cre BAC transgenes reveal temporal restriction of mesenchymal cranial neural crest and identify glandular Sox10 expression.

Diversity of neural crest derivatives has been studied with a variety of approaches during embryonic development. In mammals Cre-LoxP lineage tracing is a robust means to fate map neural crest relying on cre driven from regulatory elements of early neural crest genes. Sox10 is an essential transcription factor for normal neural crest development. A variety of efforts have been made to label neural crest derivatives using partial Sox10 regulatory elements to drive cre expression. To date published Sox10-cre lines have focused primarily on lineage tracing in specific tissues or during early feta

Diffusion tensor and restriction spectrum imaging reflect different aspects of neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease.

To meet the need for Parkinson's disease biomarkers and evidence for amount and distribution of pathological changes, MRI diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been explored in a number of previous studies. However, conflicting results warrant further investigations. As tissue microstructure, particularly of the grey matter, is heterogeneous, a more precise diffusion model may benefit tissue characterization. The purpose of this study was to analyze the diffusion-based imaging technique restriction spectrum imaging (RSI) and DTI, and their ability to detect microstructural changes within brain re

Role of melanocortin 4 receptor in hypertension induced by chronic intermittent hypoxia.

AIM: We previously demonstrated that central nervous system (CNS) melanocortin 4 receptors (MC4R) play a key role in regulating blood pressure (BP) in some conditions associated with increased SNS activity, including obesity. In this study, we examined whether activation of CNS MC4R contributes to chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH)-induced hypertension and ventilatory responses to hypercapnia. METHODS: Rats were instrumented with an intracerebroventricular (ICV) cannula in the lateral cerebral ventricle for continuous infusion of MC4R antagonist (SHU-9119) and telemetry probes for measuring m

A novel data-driven workflow combining literature and electronic health records to estimate comorbidities burden for a specific disease: a case study on autoimmune comorbidities in patients with celiac disease.

BACKGROUND: Data collected in EHRs have been widely used to identifying specific conditions; however there is still a need for methods to define comorbidities and sources to identify comorbidities burden. We propose an approach to assess comorbidities burden for a specific disease using the literature and EHR data sources in the case of autoimmune diseases in celiac disease (CD). METHODS: We generated a restricted set of comorbidities using the literature (via the MeSH® co-occurrence file). We extracted the 15 most co-occurring autoimmune diseases of the CD. We used mappings of the comorbidit

Distribution of Lutzomyia longipalpis chemotype populations in São Paulo state, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) is an emerging disease in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Its geographical expansion and the increase in the number of human cases has been linked to dispersion of Lutzomyia longipalpis into urban areas. To produce more accurate risk maps we investigated the geographic distribution and routes of expansion of the disease as well as chemotype populations of the vector. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A database, containing the annual records of municipalities which had notified human and canine AVL cases as well as the presence of the vector, wa

Allelic deletions on chromosome 11q13 in multiple tumors from individual MEN1 patients.

Familial multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder characterized by multiple parathyroid, pancreatic, duodenal, and pituitary tumors. The parathyroid tumors may arise as diffuse areas of hyperplasia, whereas the pancreatic and duodenal tumors usually form as discrete nodules. Except for a single report, tumor loss of heterozygosity (LOH) mapping of the putative MEN1 suppressor gene on chromosome 11q13 in the past has been restricted by analysis of a single tumor from individual patients and somatic cellular contamination. For this reason, it has not been

Mapping hand function with simultaneous brain-spinal cord functional MRI.

Hand motor control depends on intricate brain-spinal cord interactions that regulate muscle activity. Hand function can be disrupted by injury to the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves leading to weakness and impaired coordination. Functional MRI (fMRI) can map motor-related neural activity and potentially characterize the mechanisms underlying hand weakness and diminished coordination. Although brain motor control has been extensively studied, spinal cord mechanisms remain less explored. Here we use simultaneous brain-spinal cord fMRI to map neural activity related to hand strength and

Mapping global oral health financing architectures: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Oral healthcare financing varies considerably across countries in revenue collection, pooling, purchasing arrangements and benefit design. However, the global landscape remains fragmented, with limited systematic comparison of how established health-financing principles apply specifically to oral healthcare. This scoping review aims to map and classify oral health financing architectures globally and describe their structural design, including revenue sources, prepayment and pooling arrangements, purchasing and provider payment approaches and benefit and cost-sharing design. SETDB1 preferentially silences evolutionarily young retroelements.

Transposable elements (TEs) are epigenetically silenced through multiple mechanisms, including heterochromatin formation and DNA methylation. Prior studies have implicated SETDB1 and the Human Silencing Hub (HUSH) complex in heterochromatin formation-based TE repression, but precise characterization of repeat subclass and locus-specific effects for SETDB1 and related mechanisms has been limited by short-read transcriptome mapping. Here, we use long-read RNA sequencing mapped to a telomere-to-telomere mouse genome assembly to resolve the specific contributions of SETDB1 to TE silencing at singl

Ultrasound-Assisted Facial Autologous Fat Grafting: A Systematic Review of Perioperative Safety and Volumetric Outcomes.

High-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) is increasingly used to map facial vasculature and tissue planes, identify prior fillers, and objectively assess volume after autologous facial fat grafting (AFG), but its perioperative benefit has not been systematically synthesized. We performed a PRISMA-compliant systematic review (PROSPERO registration: CRD420251242117), searching PubMed, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, and the Cochrane Library from inception to November 1, 2025, without language restrictions. We included human clinical studies using B-mode and/or Doppler ultrasound preoperatively,

An automated platform for spatial functional modeling and fingerprint analysis of tissue molecular landscapes.

Spatial transcriptomics (ST) enables high-resolution molecular profiling while preserving tissue architecture, creating new opportunities to investigate how disease-associated pathways are organized within tissues. However, existing analytical approaches largely focus on individual pathways or cell types and do not provide a unified framework for modeling spatially varying pathway interactions across tissue sections and anatomical planes. We present an integrative framework, Spatial Fingerprints Analytics (SFinx), that introduces the concept of a spatial fingerprint for representing patterns o

A unified magnetic nanoprobe enables multi-sequence MRI mapping of post-stroke cerebrovascular and glymphatic injuries.

The coupled impairment of the cerebrovascular network and the glymphatic system is a critical pathological feature of stroke. However, comprehensively assessing this dual-pathway damage remains a significant clinical challenge. Current clinical MRI contrast agents are fundamentally limited by single-modality contrast, restricted sequence compatibility, and safety concerns, falling short of multi-parametric evaluation at clinical 3.0 T magnetic fields. To address this gap, we propose an integrated multi-sequence MRI strategy enabled by a highly translatable, bovine serum albumin (BSA)-templated
