Corrigia vitta (Dujardin, 1845), the neglected helminth of European rodents.

The digenean trematode, Corrigia vitta, is a frequently reported component species in studies of helminth communities of wild rodents in Europe, especially those of wood mice and bank voles. It has been known since Dujardin first described the species in 1845, and yet its life cycle is still poorly defined, although Dicrocoeliidae typically have at least 3 hosts in their life cycles. Here, we review the history of nomenclature changes of the species, morphological studies, definitive mammalian host species range and evidence for the identity of intermediate hosts. We also review the epidemiolo

Gut Microbiota Regulate Lipid Metabolism via the Bile Acid Pathway: Resistance to Hypoxia in Gansu Zokor (Eospalax cansus).

The Gansu zokor (Eospalax cansus), a subterranean rodent endemic to the Loess Plateau of China, exhibits remarkable adaptability to hypoxic environments. While gut microbiota are known to regulate lipid metabolism through bile acid (BA) pathways, this phenomenon has not been investigated in subterranean rodents exposed to hypoxia. This study employed 16SrRNA sequencing, targeted analysis of BA metabolites in colonic contents, and assessments of BA and lipid metabolites alongside molecular analyses in the liver and ileum under conditions of acute and chronic hypoxia in Gansu zokors. The results

Toxoplasma gondii infection affects the complete blood count and disturbs the markers of oxidative stress from the vital organs of wild rodents.

Rodents are the synanthropic mammals that are existing in close proximity to humans and their belongings and have the potential to act as the reservoir for a variety of parasites having zoonotic potential. Present study was designed to report the molecular prevalence and phylogenetic evaluation of Toxoplasma gondii in the blood samples of four wild rodent species [Rattus rattus (N = 122), Mus musculus (N = 64), Rattus norvegicus (N = 57) and Dryomys nitedula (N = 1)] that were trapped during May 2022 till July 2023 from three districts in Punjab (Jampur, Dera Ghazi Khan and Multan) and three d

In vivo models of gestational and type 2 diabetes mellitus characterized by endocrine pancreas cell impairments.

Insulin resistance contributes to the development of various diseases, including type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. Even though gestational diabetes is specific to pregnancy, it can result in long-term glucose intolerance and type 2 diabetes after delivery. Given the substantial health and economic burdens associated with diabetes, it is imperative to better understand the mechanisms leading to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes so that treatments targeted at reversing symptoms can be developed. Considering that the endocrine cells of the pancreas (islets of Langerhans) largely cont

Rodent models of dermatological disorders.

To assess the possible beneficial effects of drugs and drug candidates, different dermatological disease models are available in rodents. These models are able to mimic one or more characteristic features of the disorders, but not completely recapitulate the pathogenesis of the human skin diseases. Therefore, to improve the technology many new models have been developed both by genetic engineering and by chemical or physical induction. Currently the in vivo rodent models provide the physiologically most relevant approach to produce the pathology related to the majority of dermatological diseas

The impact of maternal immune activation on GABAergic interneuron development: A systematic review of rodent studies and their translational implications.

Mothers exposed to infections during pregnancy disproportionally birth children who develop autism and schizophrenia, disorders associated with altered GABAergic function. The maternal immune activation (MIA) model recapitulates this risk factor, with many studies also reporting disruptions to GABAergic interneuron expression, protein, cellular density and function. However, it is unclear if there are species, sex, age, region, or GABAergic subtype specific vulnerabilities to MIA. Furthermore, to fully comprehend the impact of MIA on the GABAergic system a synthesised account of molecular, cel

Protective effects of melatonin against oxidative stress induced by metabolic disorders in the male reproductive system: a systematic review and meta-analysis of rodent models.

BACKGROUND: Male infertility is a multifaceted issue that has gained scientific interest due to its increasing rate. Studies have demonstrated that oxidative stress is involved in male infertility development. Furthermore, metabolic disorders, including obesity, diabetes, hypo- and hyperthyroidism, are risk factors for male infertility, and oxidative stress is believed to contribute to this association. Melatonin, functioning as an oxidative scavenger, may represent a promising therapeutic approach for the prevention and treatment of metabolic disorder-associated male infertility. MATERIAL AN

Hypertension alters the function and expression profile of the peptide cotransporters PEPT1 and PEPT2 in the rodent renal proximal tubule.

Hypertension is a major risk factor for kidney and cardiovascular disease. The treatment of hypertensive individuals by selected ACE inhibitors and certain di-and tripeptides halts the progression of renal deterioration and extends life-span. Renal reabsorption of these low molecular weight substrates are mediated by the PEPT1 and PEPT2 cotransporters. This study aims to investigate whether hypertension and ageing affects renal PEPT cotransporters at gene, protein expression and distribution as well as function in the superficial cortex and the outer medulla of the kidney. Early neurodevelopmental reflex impairments in a rodent model of cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy (CP) causes sensorimotor disabilities due to injury to the developing brain. Experimental models do not always induce the CP phenotype completely. Early neurological assessment predicts future impairments and is valuable during development. Using a rodent model characterized by brain injury caused by maternal inflammation and perinatal anoxia, and sensorimotor restriction (experimental cerebral palsy [ECP]), we describe early neurodevelopmental delays by assessing reflexes in a stage corresponding to the brain development of term infants (Postnatal Day [P] 8 in rats). Pregnant W

VKORC1 single nucleotide polymorphisms in rodents in Spain.

Rodents are considered one of the animal pests with the greatest impact on agricultural production and public health. Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs), used as one of the most effective ways to control rodent populations worldwide, inhibit the vitamin K 2,3-epoxide reductase (VKORC1) enzyme involved in blood coagulation. Resistances to ARs are mainly associated with mutations or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the vkorc1 gene. Since the information on this subject is scarce in Spain, we monitored and discovered rodent SNPs that could favour genetic resistance in its populations. For

A Rodent Model of The Ross Operation: Syngeneic Pulmonary Artery Graft Implantation in A Systemic Position.

The Ross operation for aortic valve disease has regained new interest due to its outstanding long-term results. Nonetheless, when employed as freestanding root replacement, the possible dilation of the pulmonary autograft and subsequent aortic regurgitation is described. Several animal models have been proposed. However, these are usually limited to ex-vivo models or in-vivo experiments with relatively expensive large animal models. In this study, we sought to establish a rodent model of pulmonary artery graft (PAG) implantation in a systemic position. A total of 39 adult Lewis rats were inclu

Systematic review and meta-analysis of studies in which burrowing behaviour was assessed in rodent models of disease-associated persistent pain.

Burrowing behaviour is used to assess pain-associated behaviour in laboratory rodents. To gain insight into how models of disease-associated persistent pain and analgesics affect burrowing behaviour, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies that assessed burrowing behaviour. A systematic search in March 2020 and update in September 2020 was conducted in 4 databases. Study design characteristics and experimental data were extracted, followed by a random-effects meta-analysis. We explored the association between burrowing and monofilament-induced limb withdrawal. CORM-3 exerts a neuroprotective effect in a rodent model of traumatic brain injury via the bidirectional gut-brain interactions.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) induced the gastrointestinal inflammation that is associated with TBI-related morbidity and mortality. Carbon monoxide-releasing molecule (CORM)-3 is a water-soluble exogenous carbon monoxide that exerts protective effects against inflammation-induced pyroptosis. We investigated the gastrointestinal inflammation in a rodent model of traumatic brain injury (TBI) with subsequent hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation (HSR), as well as effects of CORM-3 using an intestinal injection on both gut and brain. METHODS: Following exposure to TBI plus HSR, rats were

The Emerging Role of Microglia in Neuromyelitis Optica.

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an autoantibody-triggered neuro-inflammatory disease which preferentially attacks the spinal cord and optic nerve. Its defining autoantibody is specific for the water channel protein, aquaporin-4 (AQP4), which primarily is localized at the end-feet of astrocytes. Histopathology studies of early NMO lesions demonstrated prominent activation of microglia, the resident immune sentinels of the central nervous system (CNS). Significant microglial reactivity is also observed in NMO animal models induced by introducing AQP4-IgG into the CNS. Here we review the potential

Design and construction of an interchangeable RF coil system for rodent spinal cord MR imaging at 9.4 T.

Rodent models of spinal cord injury (SCI) have been widely used in pre-clinical studies. Injuries may occur at different levels of the lumbar and thoracic cord, and the number of segments injured and their depths may vary along the spine. It is thereby challenging to build one universal RF coil that exhibits optimal performance for all spinal cord imaging applications, especially in an animal scanner with small in-bore space and limited hardware configurations. We developed an interchangeable RF coil system for a 9.4 T small animal MRI scanner, in which the users can select an optimal coil spe
