During 2006-2012 years different types of parietal pleurectomy (PE) with lung decortication (LD) were performed for 135 patients. Among them: 42 (31.1%)--had standart PE with LD (with performing usual thoracotomy); 34 (25.2%)--had video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) PE with LD; 36 (26.7%)--videothoracoscopy (VTS) PE with LD; 23 (17.0%)--standart PE with LD combined with lung resection. In order to identify mediators involved in immune-mediated disease regression, the pleural cytokine and histopathological profile was evaluated in tuberculous pleurisy patients with varied disease duration and clinical presentation, previous to chemotherapy. OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of immunotherapy with mycobacterium vaccine in patients with tuberculous pleurisy.
METHODS: The time for effusion resolution and lymphocyte counts in the effusions were observed in patients with tuberculous pleurisy who received anti-tuberculous therapy and thoracentesis (group A) or anti-tuberculous therapy and thoracentesis plus intramuscularly administered polysaccharide nucleic acid fraction of Bacillus Calmette Guerin (PSN-BCG,) (group S). In situ end-labeling technique of fragment DNA was used to detect the apoptosis of lymphocytes in the effusions.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to investigate the current impact of HIV infection on the clinical presentation, laboratory features and outcome of tuberculous pleural effusion in adult patients in Yaounde.

BACKGROUND: Pyothorax-associated lymphoma (PAL) is a rare, but distinct, clinico-pathologic entity which occurs most often in Japanese people; to the best of our knowledge, only six cases of it have been reported in Western countries. The tumour develops several decades following artificial pneumothorax or chronic pleuritis due to tuberculous infection, produces pleural effusion associated with extensive local lymphomatous infiltrates, and is sustained by a polymorphic large B-cell clonal proliferation showing EBV integration in the genoma of the neoplastic cells.

A review of the records for all cases of tuberculous pleurisy notified in Canada from 1970 through 1974 and in British Columbia from 1967 through 1976 showed that in the periods studied the annual incidence of this condition was low, just under nine cases per million population, and was declining. The disease commonly occurred a few months after a primary infection with tubercle bacilli. Bacteriologic confirmation of the diagnosis was possible in only 40% of the cases since biopsy specimens were not consistently cultured.
