Thalamic infarctions: differential effects on vestibular function in the roll plane (35 patients).

We determined the subjective visual vertical (SVV), ocular torsion (OT), skew deviation, and lateral head tilt in 35 patients with acute thalamic infarctions (14 paramedian, 17 posterolateral, and four anterior polar) and in five patients with mesodiencephalic hemorrhages to obtain the tonic effects on vestibular function in the roll plane. Eight of 14 paramedian infarctions had complete ocular tilt reaction (OTR) with contraversive head tilt, skew deviation, OT, and SVV tilt. The OTR was due to ischemia of the rostral midbrain tegmentum, including the interstitial nucleus of Cajal (INC), and

Factors influencing results with streptomycin perfusion of the labyrinth.

Streptomycin perfusion of the labyrinth is the logical choice of treatment for the third stage of Meniere's disease with intractable vertigo. The results of streptomycin perfusion of the labyrinth are comparable to those of other treatments, including endolymphatic shunt and vestibular nerve section. Refinements must be made in the process of selecting candidates for the operation. To study the factors influencing the results of streptomycin perfusion of the labyrinth, 144 patients who had streptomycin perfusion of the labyrinth and were followed for 1 year were studied using the 1972 AAOO cla

Effects of linear vestibular stimulation on body-rocking behavior in adults with profound mental retardation.

The effects of linear vestibular stimulation on body-rocking behaviors in adults with profound mental retardation were studied. A single-system multiple base-line design across 3 subjects was used. The design included three phases spread over a period of 9 weeks. An interval time sampling procedure was used to collect data. Data from the 3 subjects were graphed and interpreted through visual inspection. Trend lines were computed with the celeration line approach to supplement the visual inspection of the data. The results demonstrated a decrease in body-rocking behaviors during the treatment a

Ontogeny of the calcium binding protein parvalbumin in the rat nervous system.

In the adult rat brain, the calcium-binding protein parvalbumin is preferentially associated with spontaneously fast-firing, metabolically active neurons and coexists with gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA) in cortical inhibitory interneurons. Whether this is so in developing neurons has not been explored. To this end, we have used parvalbumin immunohistochemistry to study expression of this protein in the rat nervous system during pre- and postnatal life. Our results indicate that parvalbumin first appears at embryonic day 13 in sensory system of the spinal cord, in the vestibular (VIII), the tr

Evaluation of a three-stage management program for Menière's disease.

A three-stage program for management of Menière's disease, consisting of diuretics, endolymphatic sac surgery, and intratympanal installations of gentamicin was tested in a peripheral county without neurosurgical facilities during 1981-1985. All 106 patients in the program were admitted at least once to the only ENT department of the area. The authors believe that these cases represented the most serious part of a total incidence estimated to be about 6.5 times higher than what the present material represent. When evaluated at the end of the period according to the AAOO 1972 classification , o

[Occupational work capacity and functional status of an operator during repeated exposure to optokinetic and antiorthostatic forces].

It has been shown that optokinetic stimulation that elicits sensory-autonomic manifestations of motion sickness and head-down tilt that simulates fluid redistribution in the cranial direction decrease professional abilities of the operator even after he has developed good skills. Repeated exposures to optokinetic stimulation or head-down tilt have some training effect. However, control tests that include both optokinetic stimulation and head-down tilt give evidence that their training effect is not adequate.

Diving injuries to the inner ear.

Most of the previous literature concerning otologic problems in compressed gas environments has emphasized middle ear barotrauma. With recent increases in commercial, military, and sport diving to deeper depths, inner ear disturbances during these exposures have been noted more frequently. Studies of inner ear physiology and pathology during diving indicate that the causes and treatment of these problems differ depending upon the phase and type of diving. Humans exposed to simulated depths of up to 305 meters without barotrauma or decompression sickness develop transient, conductive hearing lo

[Cardiovascular reactions in orthostatic tests and human resistence to vestibular stimuli].

The paper discusses the relationship between the vestibular stability of man and his cardiovascular regulation that develops during the recumbent-to-upright change of the body position. It describes specific parameters typical of the intermediate processes of the cardiovascular system that are prognostically important for the evaluation of the vestibular stability. The paper gives equations of multiple regression helping to predict the level of vestibular resistance with respect to the pattern of intermediate processes of the cardiovascular system during orthostatic tests.

Visual-Vestibular Modification of Egomotion Perception in Patients With Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness in Supine and Standing Positions.

BACKGROUND: Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) has been classified by the Bárány Society as a chronic functional dizziness disorder with perceived unsteadiness. Symptoms typically worsen by upright posture or exposure to moving visual stimuli or complex visual patterns. The specific visual features remain poorly defined. We investigated how visual, vestibular, and combined visual-vestibular stimulation affects egomotion perception in PPPD patients, comparing responses in upright and supine positions to those of age-matched healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Participants performed a

Substantially Higher Vestibular Hydrops Agreement in Older Patients Assessed by Non-contrast vs. Contrast-enhanced MRI: A Preliminary Study.

PURPOSE: This preliminary study aimed to investigate the agreement in endolymphatic hydrops (EH) grading between high-resolution non-contrast and contrast-enhanced HYDROPS (HYbriD of Reversed image Of Positive endolymph signal and native image of positive perilymph Signal) techniques in the same subjects and to clarify the effect of patient age on the concordance between the 2 methods. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on 12 patients (24 ears; age range: 24-76 years) suspected of EH, all of whom underwent both non-contrast and 4-hour post-contrast 3T MRI. Evaluating Common Cavity Cochlear Deformities Using CT Images and 3D Reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to compare the common cavity (CC) with the normal anatomy inner ear in order to evaluate whether the cavity is representing both the cochlear and the vestibular parts of the inner ear and to revisit CC deformity from a three-dimensional (3D) perspective. METHODS: High-resolution computed tomography image datasets of 17 temporal bones initially identified as CC were evaluated with 3D reconstruction and multiplanar image analysis using a free available software for 3D segmentation of the inner ear. All 3D images of CC were compared to a normal inner ear. Max

Vestibular dysfunction is a manifestation of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is the second most common cause of developmental delay after Down syndrome. Impaired cognitive development is highly prevalent, but also motor abnormalities such as hypotonia and delays in achieving motor milestones are described. Instability is frequently detected in children, adolescents, and adults and is mostly attributed to their limited motor performance. Until now, vestibular function has not been investigated in these patients, despite the growing evidence that they often have inner ear malformations. The aim of this prospective study was to id

Vestibular symptoms in acute hemispheric strokes.

A prospective study focused on whether vestibular symptoms are seen in acute hemispheric strokes, and if so, the frequency and lateralization of causative lesions on MRI. Among 668 patients with hemispheric infarction, we prospectively included those with chief complaints of acute vestibular symptoms, such as vertigo/dizziness, nausea/vomiting and gait instability, in the "VS" group. We also retrospectively reviewed MRI of all stroke patients, and included cases with the findings of parieto-insular vestibular cortex (PIVC) or temporo-periSylvian vestibular cortex (TPSVC) lesion by diffusion-we

Standing postural stability during galvanic vestibular stimulation is associated with the motor function of the hemiplegic lower extremity post-stroke.

Background: The vestibular system is profoundly involved in standing postural stability. Patients with post-stroke hemiparesis have poor postural control function; nevertheless, it is unclear as to how the vestibular system affects postural control after stroke. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the relationship between galvanic whole-body sway responses and motor function of the hemiplegic lower extremity post-stroke.Methods: Thirty stroke patients and 49 healthy controls underwent standing body sway tests to examine postural control function during vestibula

Association between Syncope and Tumarkin Attacks in Ménière's Disease.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current study was to further collect evidence that would confirm the hypothesis that vestibular drop attacks (VDAs) could cause syncope in patients with Ménière's disease (MD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey design was employed in the present study. An Internet-based survey was administered on 602 individuals with MD. The mean age of the participants was 56.7 (25-75) years, and the mean duration of the disease was 12.4 (0.5-35) years. RESULTS: VDAs with varying severity were present among 307 (50.7%) patients and led to fall in 92 patients, and syn

Heat shock protein 70 is a key molecule to rescue imbalance caused by low-frequency noise.

A previous study showed that people living in urban areas are generally exposed to low-frequency noise (LFN) with frequencies below 100 Hz and sound levels of 60-110 dB in daily and occupational environments. Exposure to LFN has been shown to affect balance in humans and mice. However, there is no information about prevention of LFN-mediated imbalance because of a lack of information about the target region based on health risk assessment of LFN exposure. Here, we show that acute exposure to LFN at 100 Hz, 95 dB, but not at 85 dB or 90 dB, for only 1 h caused imbalance in mice. The exposed mic
